Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This was a game show that forced single men and women to chase each other around a giant flower. Each correct answer in a series of 'battle of the sexes' style questions meant the winning contestant could move one petal closer to the male or female in question. What was the name of this ridiculous show?

Answer: 'Love Me, Love Me Not'

Hosted by Ross Shafer, the show ran only from 1986-1987. However, lovers of Canadian cheese can still catch the program in late night reruns from time to time. It was one of several Canadian game shows that actually found success south of the border!
2. In this show, three pairs raced through a grocery store, loading items into their shopping carts and trying to beat the clock and each other in the process. What was the name of the show?

Answer: 'Supermarket Sweep'

The breathless shoppers weren't awarded the groceries at the end of the show, however. Instead, they had to endure further humiliation by trying to guess which of sixteen scrolls of paper held the name of a 'dream vacation'. In all the shows I watched, I never once saw anybody win the 'big prize'. Usually they ended up with a consolation gift valued at far less than the amount of the groceries they'd pulled off the shelves.

The depressing show was hosted by a constantly-smiling Tino Monte.
3. This game show, hosted by Wayne Cox, was nothing more than 'Charades' with a few has-been sitcom actors thrown into the mix. What was it called?

Answer: 'Acting Crazy'

The show was taped in Vancouver, and featured such 'celebrity' guests as Sally Struthers, Jennilee Harrison and Marcia Wallace. I saw one episode where the talent must have been a no-show, because fellow Canadian game show host Stu Jeffries appeared as one of the 'stars'.
4. Who was the host of the Canadian game show 'Headline Hunters'?

Answer: Jim Perry

One of the most employed of all Canadian game show guys, Perry also hosted 'Card Sharks', 'It's Your Move', 'Eye Bet' and 'Definition'.
5. The groovy theme song from the original 'Austin Powers' movie was undoubtedly familiar to Canadians, as it was also the tune of an old Canadian game show. Which program featured this catchy music?

Answer: 'Definition'

The melody is actually called 'Soul Bossa Nova', and was written by Quincy Jones. Mike Myers wasn't the first Canadian to seize upon this swinging tune. Canadian band The Dream Warriors modified the music for their hit song 'My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style' in 1991.
6. What was the name of the Canadian game show that made contestants run across an oversized board game, in the hopes of winning a few hundred dollars?

Answer: 'The Mad Dash'

Hosted by Pierre Lalonde, 'The Mad Dash' was one of the more successful Canadian game shows, lasting from 1979 through 1985. Depending on the roll of the dice and the answers of their teammates, contestants would quickly advance to spaces such as 'Go Broke', 'Switch Spaces' or 'Win'.
7. Canadian game shows are not only known for their tacky sets, silly premises and bargain basement prizes. They are also among the most ridiculously-named shows. Which of the following was NOT the name of a Canadian game show?

Answer: 'Who's At The Door?'

Hosted by Fergie Olver and Catherine Swing, 'Just Like Mom' featured three mother-and-child teams competing for bad prizes. 'Reach for the Top' was a long-running quiz show featuring four-person teams of high school students from across Canada. 'Test Pattern', hosted by Dan Gallagher, was a zany program that showcased such oddities as the 'hairy back brothers' and a wheel on which people were spun around. 'Who's At The Door?' is merely a title I made up, but who knows? In Canada, a show with that name is likely to be produced one day.
8. Sort of a Canadian version of 'The Newlywed Game', this game show featured couples competing for prizes by testing knowledge of their mates. What was the name of the show?

Answer: 'Love Handles'

The prizes on this show were unbelievably bad--even worse than on its American counterpart. In order to win a meagre Canadian Savings Bond that would mature in about a thousand years, couples had to guess all their answers correctly, as well as 'steal' all possible answers from the other pairs. Needless to say, this proved impossible, and no couple ever won the big prize.

The program did manage to make television history, however, by being the first game show (to my knowledge) to include gay couples among its contestants.
9. True or False: There was once a Canadian game show called 'This Is The Law', in which contestants would try to identify bizarre municipal by-laws?

Answer: True

Sad, but true. Hosted by Austin Willis, the show lasted from 1972-1976. Having knowledge of obscure laws such as 'It's illegal to eat an orange on Sunday in Moose Jaw' did not pay off very handsomely, however. Like most other Canadian shows, it awarded prizes like dictionaries and alarm clocks.
10. Odd titles are not exclusive to Canadian game shows. The shows' HOSTS have also included a number of strangely-named personalities. Who of the following was NOT a host of a game show made in Canada?

Answer: Phil Goober

Wink Martindale was the host of 'The Last Word', Dusty Martel hosted 'Lingo' and Fergie Olver was co-host of 'Just Like Mom'. Again, Phil Goober is just a name I made up, but I'm sure he's out there somewhere, waiting to jump into the game show spotlight.
11. Who of the following people was a HOST of long-running Canadian game show 'Front Page Challenge'?

Answer: Fred Davis

Burton, Sinclair and Webster were regular contestants, or panelists on the show. Players who have taken my previous quiz will already know my thoughts on this beloved Canadian program, which ran from 1957-1995. Let it suffice to say the show helped me fall asleep on many a Sunday night.
12. The object of this Canadian-produced game show was to decode messages from license plates, e.g. 'To Be or Not To Be' from '2BRNT2B'. What was this show called?

Answer: 'Bumper Stumpers'

The show was hosted by Al Dubois and premiered in 1987. Surprisingly, it was another of the Canadian offerings that 'made it big' in the US market. I would have thought that 'honking' theme song alone would have caused people to change the channel.
13. Another popular destination for out-of-work actors was the studio of this Canadian game show, which featured 'celebrity' panelists attempting to identify mysterious-looking objects. Three of the four stars made up an answer, while the fourth offered contestants an accurate description of the object's use. Contestants had to guess which was the correct answer. What was the name of this show?

Answer: 'The New Liars Club'

The 'famous' guests appearing on 'The New Liars Club' were even less in-demand than those from 'Acting Crazy'. Regular panelists included Jimmy Walker and Shannon Tweed, who did their best to come up with humorous and plausible descriptions of nineteenth century butter churns--Sadly, their best just wasn't very good.
14. Canadian game show hosts have often fared better than the programs they hosted in this country, eventually finding huge success in the United States. Which of the following famous hosts was NOT born in Canada?

Answer: Bob Barker

Barker was born in Darrington, Washington. Monty Hall's birthplace was Winnipeg, Manitoba. Alan Thicke was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and Alex Trebek entered the world in Sudbury, Ontario.
15. Finally, Canadian television producers could not resist attempting to cash in on the popularity of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'. Which well-known journalist hosted the short-lived Canadian version of this show?

Answer: Pamela Wallin

There were just two episodes of this Canuck-content spinoff. They were taped in the New York studio, with Wallin in Regis's seat. Though CTV received much mail protesting Pamela's performance, the shows earned the network its highest ratings in years. Hope you enjoyed this look back at Canadian game shows. Even if you didn't score a perfect 150 points, we have some lovely consolation prizes waiting for you!
