Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hudson & Rex
"Hudson & Rex" first aired in 2019 and the title pair are members of the St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, police department. Charlie Hudson (John Reardon), and his partner, a German shepherd dog named Rex (Diesel von Burgimwald) solve crimes in Canada's newest and easternmost province.
Other members of their team are played by Mayko Nguyen, Kevin Hanchard and Justin Kelly, but Rex is clearly the key to solving most cases. The show is filmed in and around the city of St John's, giving an authentic feel to each episode.
2. Corner Gas
Set in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, "Corner Gas" (2004-2009) was a comedy that centred around the comings and goings from the title gas station cum convenience store, the Ruby coffee shop next door and the denizens thereof. Brent Leroy (Brent Butt) owned the gas station, having taken over from his father Oscar (Eric Peterson) and big city girl Lacey (Gabrielle Miller) came from Toronto to run the Ruby after inheriting it from her aunt.
They and the other regulars provided lots of laughs, which were continued in xa movie ("Corner Gas The Movie") in 2014 and an animated series ("Corner Gas Animated") which ran from 2018-2021.
3. 19-2
There were actually two versions of the police procedural series "19-2", both set in Montreal, Quebec. The French language version (2011-2015) starred Claude Legault and Réal Bossé as partners Benoit Chartier and Nick Beroff. The English language version (2014-2017) starred Jared Keeso as Ben Chartier and Adrian Holmes as Nick Barron, and followed similar plot lines to the French version for the first couple of seasons.
The title was derived from the call sign of their cruiser.
4. Kim's Convenience
"Kim's Convenience" is set in the convenience store in Toronto run by the Kim family, led by Mr Kim (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and his feisty wife (Jean Yoon). Known as Appa and Umma to their kids Janet (Andrea Bang) and Jung (Simu Liu) they are proud of both their Korean heritage and their Canadian home.
While played mostly for laughs, some serious subjects are touched upon, without getting too heavy about it.
5. Cardinal
Although the setting of "Cardinal" (2017-2020) is the fictional Algonquin City, the locations are clearly in and around North Bay (and to a lesser extent Sudbury), Ontario. The cases tackled by detectives John Cardinal (Billy Campbell) and Lise Delorme (Karine Vanasse) are complex, often brutal and usually played out in the depths of winter.
There's also time to take a look at their personal lives, which go through a few ups and downs over the four seasons.
6. Anne with an E
"Anne with an E" (2017-2019) is based on the "Anne of Green Gables" novels of L.M. Montgomery, about a young orphan girl, played here by Amybeth McNulty, who goes to live in Prince Edward Island, with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert (R.H. Thomson and Geraldine James). Her struggles, triumphs and everything in between make up the majority of the story lines.
7. The Beachcombers
"The Beachcombers" (1972-90; 2002-2004) was set in a town just to the north of Vancouver, British Columbia where Nick (Bruno Gerussi) is in the business of salvaging lumber, and Relic (Robert Clothier) usually is doing something to make life difficult for Nick and his friends.
The initial run of eighteen seasons made it one of the longest running dramatic series in Canadian television history. The attempt to bring it back in the early 21st century was less successful.
8. Less Than Kind
"Less Than Kind" (2008-2013) is a comedy-drama about a dysfunctional Jewish family living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Stories centre around teenager Sheldon Blecher (Jesse Camacho) whose problems with his family are exacerbated by being overweight. Maury Chaykin and Benjamin Arthur also starred as family members.
9. Shattered City
Sub-titled "The Halifax Explosion" the 2003 two-part series "Shattered City" is based on true events surrounding the collision of two ships in Halifax, Nova Scotia's harbour on 6 December 1917. The subsequent explosion destroyed a large part of the city, killed many and maimed more.
This tale follows a few different people (including the harbour pilot who took some of the blame) as they try to survive not only the explosion and fires it caused, but also the blizzard that came the next day. The cast includes Graham Greene, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Donat and many others.
10. Heartland
"Heartland", which first aired in 2007, is at its core a family story but also a modern Western, as the family includes working cowboys in its ranks. Their ranch, Heartland, is situated in the province of Alberta in western Canada and is sometimes known for working with both problem horses and problem people. The cast includes Amber Marshall, Shaun Johnston and Michelle Morgan.
