Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

The Border Terrier was bred in the area where Roxburghshire, Scotland and Northumberland, England join. They came from the Coquet Valley and were originally called the Coquetdale Terrier.
2. What was the name of the first Border Terrier to be registered with the British Kennel Club?

Border Terriers have four accepted colours in the British Kennel Club - grizzle and tan, wheaten, red and blue and tan, not black and tan, although it can appear black. Grizzle and tan and blue and tan are the most common colours, wheaten is the least. Blue and tans are often seen at shows as their coat can often be a better texture.

Apart from 'Coquetdale Terrier', the other old name for the Border is 'Reedwater Terrier'. 'Rothbury Terrier' is another name for a Bedlington Terrier.

Answer: An otter

The breed description states the Border must have a 'head like that of an otter'. It is the breed's most distinguishing feature.

8. What is the name of the breed record holder whose greatest achievment was becoming Reserve Best in Show in Crufts 1988?

Answer: Ch. Brannigan of Brumberhill

Ch. Brannigan of Brumberhill produced 10 champions, including Ch. Otterkin Singin' the Blues which is my pup's great great great granny, making Bodie a direct decsendant of him. Amazingly enough his name is also Bodie. The Brumberhill kennels where he is from have also produced the Bitch RBecord Holder, Ch. Brumberhill Betwixt ShCM.
9. Which of these jobs/activities these is the Border terrier not suited for?

Answer: Lap dog

Border Terriers were bred to hunt and as they are agile and fairly easy to train they are also often seen in agility and obedience, but they are energetic, so they shouldn't be lap dogs. Borders need regular exercise. They will curl up on your lap, but they can't spend all day like that.
10. What type of coat does the Border Terrier have?

Answer: Harsh and dense

A Border Terrier's coat should be 'harsh and dense; with close undercoat'. They should not be clipped, but need to be hand stripped biannually.
