Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why is a Staffy properly named a "Staffordshire bull terrier"?

Answer: It is a descendant of pitbulls and terriers from Staffordshire, England

There's actually no evidence that the majority of dogfight enthusiasts were Staffordshire residents. Dogfights took place all over England for the reasons of tenderising bull meat before auctions, or for the amusement of crowds. The Staffy does have terrier and pitbull blood in it, and therefore may not be a smart choice around small animals such as ferrets.
2. Which coat color is the most common on a Staffy?

Answer: Brindle

Black and tan, or liver coats are highly undesirable colors on a Staffy. Blue can sometimes be seen on Staffies, but is rare. Brindle is the most common coat for Staffies.
3. Which of these are Staffies most likely to suffer from as they age?

Answer: Mastocytoma

Mastocytoma is the development of mast-cell tumors in the dog, and is very common in Staffies. Epilepsy is more common in beagles and other scent hounds, hemophilia is rare in dogs, and hemophobia not a condition generally suffered by dogs.
4. What is a "Staffy Smile"?

Answer: The face a Staffy pulls when it is panting

When a Staffy pants, it pulls its lips back into a wide "smile" that shows all of its teeth. It's most often seen when the dog has been involved in vigorous play!
5. Which of these is a Staffy most likely to do on any given day?

Answer: Sleep

Staffies aren't actually vicious dogs by nature at all. A well-trained, well-socialised Staffy is more likely to sleep most of the day than terrorise a neighborhood or maul other dogs. It has been known for Staffies to steal food from their human counterparts if not well trained, though.
6. Do Staffies get on with other animals?

Answer: Yes, except for small ones or intruders

Staffies are very loving dogs that tend to get on well with many other animals; however, due to their terrier heritage, they tend to chase smaller animals such as ferrets or mice. Territorial Staffies may also show hostility to invading animals such as cats or birds.
7. Why do some people insist that Staffies are great pets?

Answer: Staffies are loving and intelligent

Staffies are loving dogs, brilliant with children and devoted to their primary caregiver, amazingly quick to learn and easy to train. Staffies can make excellent guard dogs. Intimidation is the worst reason in the world to buy a Staffy. Since Staffies are quite playful and active they are not good for lazy families, even though they do tend to sleep a lot.
8. Roughly how many puppies do Staffies have per litter?

Answer: 5-10

Although young females have less puppies in their first litter (usually around 3-6), in an older and more experienced female the litter will have anywhere between five and ten puppies per litter. Having a maximum of a litter every year, being able to breed from roughly age two, and having a breeding lifespan of 8-10 years, it's pretty obvious to see why spaying a Staffy girl is a good idea.
9. How often should a Staffy be groomed?

Answer: Once or twice a week

The Staffy is a shorthaired breed, making it very easy to groom with low shedding. It may require more frequent grooming in winter due to its winter coat, though.
10. What circumstance is most likely to make a Staffy aggressive?

Answer: Harm to their family

Staffies are wonderfully soft with children, and will hardly ever be aggressive to them. They also love people and will rarely be aggressive to them, having been bred as a people-dog. They may whinge and bark at intruders or harm to their territory, but will not become particularly aggressive towards them unless they see the intruder as a threat to their family.
