Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the Airedale nicknamed?

Answer: King of the Terriers

This is because they are the largest breed of terrier, and because they are quite versatile. Originally they were used for vermin hunting, but then became used for big game hunting as well. Airedales were used in World War II as an army sentry dog. Airedales today are mostly companion dogs, but things they can do include guarding, watchdogging, hunting, tracking, military work, police work, and competetive obedience.
2. What is the Airedale's coloring?

Answer: Tan and black

This is the Airedale's customary coloring, but they may have some red in with the tan.
3. Airedales are eager-to-please and very easy to train.

Answer: False

Though considered by many to be the easiest to train of all terriers, it does not make them like the docile golden retriever. Airedales are a terrier -- so naturally they can be stubborn and difficult to train. They are strong-willed and dominant, and may become oppurtunists if they don't have a firm owner. Generally, Airedales will be fairly happy to please as long as they have a take-charge owner that uses an appropriate training method, and if there isn't a distraction (squirrel, other dog, food, etc.). If their mind is set on chasing a chipmunk, you won't be able to get them away for a raw steak! Airedales will not respond to harsh, overbearing punishment, and doing this will simply cause them to ignore you and make them harder to train. Read up on training techniques for your dog, and use positive reinforcement. Clicker training is also an effective technique that is worth reading into.
4. Airedales are quite likely to have dominance problems.

Answer: True

The owner of an Airedale must be able to handle the dog in a firm, yet positive manner, and immediately create the position of "Top Dog". The Airedale is likely to try to dominate other family members or visitors that they see as submissive. This can lead to willfulness and disobedience, so target the problem and seek help right away to avoid a very dominant dog. Airedales also have a strong tendency to be dog-aggressive. Early socialization helps soothe this, however, the Airedale is still likely to want to be dominant with other dogs.
5. Airedales make great pets for most families.

Answer: False

The Airedale is not for everyone. Airedales can do fine with children if raised with them from puppyhood and taught to be gentle. Most of the time the Airedale will simply want to play with the child, but these dogs are boisterous and strong, and known to be very rowdy until given proper obedience training. Care should be taken that they don't intimidate, dominate, or knock over the child. Also, Airedales can't blend into a family with small animals because of their high prey drive, and most will not hesitate to violently end the life of any small critter.
6. How can the Airedale's energy level be described?

Answer: Between moderate and high

Airedales are an athletic breed, requiring a good amount of exercise daily. However, their stamina cannot breach the outgoing Labrador retriever or energetic border collie, which is why they rank about moderate. Airedales love to play, so you can try teaching a variety of fun activities.
7. Airedales are low-maintainence for grooming, and are a non-shedding breed.

Answer: False

In contrast to what some people think, Airedales are very high maintainence for grooming. Regular trimming is needed since their coat will keep growing extensively. Their coat should be stripped about twice a year to maintain ideal condition, although dogs simply used for companionship can go without it. If they are not groomed regularly and properly, they will shed, leaving tufts of hair around the house. Stripping the coat leaves a nicer texture, and causes them to shed little to no hair. Airedales' coats tend to attract burrs, and also need daily brushing to avoid tangles and mats.

The beard should be washed daily because of food residue.
8. When was the Airedale developed?

Answer: In the mid 1800s

It was developed in Yorkshire from the ancient working terrier. It was named after the Valley of Aire in England. Later on it was crossed with the Otterhound to make it a better swimmer.
9. What was the Airedale formerly known as?

Answer: Waterside Terrier

The Otterhound is an old, more uncommon breed that is an excellent swimmer and was used to hunt small prey near water. The Tweed Water Spaniel no longer exsists. The German Water Terrier is a made-up name.
10. Airedales are:

Answer: Courageous, lively, playful, fearless, with a high prey drive

It's difficult to describe any breed using just a few words, but the above is a basic summary. Airedales are also bold and protective, loyal (but easily distracted), sometimes difficult to train, and quite self-willed.
