Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which genus do most clownfish belong to?

Answer: Amphiprion

27 species of clownfish belong to the genus Amphiprion. The other 1 species belongs to the genus Premnas.
2. Where would you normally go diving to see a clownfish?

Answer: Coral Reefs

Some people are even lucky enough to own their own marine aquarium with clownfish. Clownfish are a very popular choice to keep because they are very hardy, meaning more easy to keep then other fish species.
3. In an aquarium, what other type of fish could you keep with a clownfish?

Answer: Damsels

You can't keep two species of a clownfish in the one tank because they tend to become aggressive. Lionfish and sharks would both eat the clownfish. Damsels, like clownfish, are hardy and tend to get along.
4. What is the invertebrate called that clownfish hide in and live in?

Answer: Anemone

Up to seven pairs of clownfish can live in the same anemone. Clownfish are covered in a mucus that protects them from the sting of the anemone. Anemones eat the food that clownfish leave behind and also clean the clownfish.
5. What colour are most species of clownfish?

Answer: Orange

Clownfish are most commonly orange but can be found in many different colours including red, pink, maroon and even black. They can also have white stripes or patches on them but this isn't the case with every species.
6. What country's seas would you not normally find a clownfish in?

Answer: Norway

Clownfish are found in warm waters in the Southern Hemisphere. There are species of clownfish found in Vanuatu, Seychelles and even Oman.
7. Which is not a real clownfish?

Answer: Four-Band Clownfish

The largest clownfish species can grow up to 18cm in length, the smallest only reach 10 cm. They are smaller when bred in captivity.
8. Clownfish can change gender.

Answer: True

The dominant male clownfish has the ability to change gender to female, but only when the female dies. This is called sequential hermaphroditism.
9. When would a clownfish lay her eggs?

Answer: Around the same time as a full moon

The male guards the eggs until they hatch. This takes about 6 to 10 days. They can lay anywhere from 400 to 4000 eggs. Imagine naming all the kids!
10. What wouldn't you see a clownfish eat?

Answer: Stingrays

Clownfish take the easy option and catch their food. In captivity they will eat artificial food such as fish flakes and pellets. Clown fish have been known to eat their own eggs, especially the first few times they breed.
