Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This dog breed was bred from the native retrievers of Maryland in the USA. New blood was introduced to the breed as a result of two dogs being rescued from a shipwreck. The new blood greatly improved the original stock therefore this breed of dog was produced.

Answer: Chesapeake Bay retriever

Although the Chesapeake is not the most popular breed, it has a reputation of being very useful as it retrieves waterfowl from even the iciest waters. This is because of its thick fur coat, which has an oily surface. Only a shake or two will basically dry it off!
2. This dog was bred in Britain and was originally used for bull baiting. Today however bull baiting is illegal and the breed has evolved to its present characteristic form.

Answer: English bulldog

Bull baiting began in the early 13th century and continued until it was banned and made illegal in 1835. In its sporting days the English bulldog looked more like a boxer or a Staffordshire bull terrier.
3. This characteristic breed was developed from the old French hounds, which were crossed with bloodhounds. This dog was bred to accompany hunters on foot. Shakespeare reportedly compared this dog with 'Thessalian' bulls.

Answer: Basset hound

Although the Basset is a delightful dog, with heaps of charm and character, they unfortunately suffer from many health problems.
4. This dog breed was named after an estate in Wales. It was developed from the Dandie Dinmont terrier, with shorter legs.

Answer: Sealyham terrier

Courage is an important feature in this breed, so that they have the bravery to tackle badgers and foxes in their burrows.

Answer: True

Although they are always born hanging, it is fairly common for people to crop their Great Dane's ears as a puppy so they stand erect.
6. Which breed of dog is said to 'yodel' instead of bark?

Answer: Basenji

The Basenji very rarely, if ever, barks. Instead it sounds like it is singing or "yodeling". The Basenji was used by the natives of Congo as a pack-hunting dog.
7. This intelligent breed can be found in many different colours, usually black and brown but can also be found in blue or white. These agile dogs have a natural trotting gait, which has been emphasized so they look like they are ready to spring into action.
