Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the creator of the bull terrier breed?

Answer: James Hinks

It was the 1850s when "dog dealer" James Hinks took the existing "bull-and-terrier" breed and crossed it with the white English terrier (now extinct) to refine the appearance of these dogs. Hinks called his new creation simply "bull terrier".
2. Where was the breed created?

Answer: Birmingham, England

James Hinks, the creator of the breed, was a dog dealer from Birmingham in England.
3. What is the major difference between the exhibition of bull terriers in the US and in Australia?

Answer: Whites and coloureds are shown separately in the US, but together in Australia

White bull terriers are shown separately to coloured bull terriers in the American show ring. In Australia, bull terriers of all coat types compete together.
The separate showing of whites and coloureds in the US may be related to the early creation of the coloured bull terrier, which was fiercely resisted at the time by some supporters of the all-white bull terrier.
4. What was the name of the deaf bull terrier who became known as The Greeter of Juneau, Alaska, in the early 20th century?

Answer: Patsy Ann

Patsy Ann was a deaf bull terrier of no fixed address who had the ability to detect when boats were about to arrive at dock in her home town of Juneau in Alaska. She would run along the wharf to welcome the new arrivals, and hence the local mayor dubbed her the town's "Official Greeter". To this day a statue of Patsy Ann, who died in 1942, sits waiting for the ships to arrive in Juneau.
5. Until the late 19th century, the bull terrier breed had:

Answer: cropped ears

The bull terrier frequently had cropped ears during the 1800's. When this practice was outlawed in Britain, breeders had to overhaul their breeding programs to create a naturally upright ear.
6. What is the name of the quarterly publication of the Bull Terrier Club of America?

Answer: BARKS

BARKS is the quarterly publication of the Bull Terrier Club of America, which interestingly is one of the earliest breed clubs to have come into existence, having been founded in 1897.
7. According to the American breed standard, the feet of a bull terrier should somewhat resemble those of which animal?

Answer: cat

The American breed standard states that the bull terrier feet should be: "round and compact with well-arched toes like a cat".
8. The bull terrier head should possess:

Answer: a downface with an egg shaped head

The downface and eggshaped head of the bull terrier is unique in the canine world. Although, according to the Australian breed standard, the nose should be "bent downwards at the tip", the standard also states that the "profile curves gently downwards from top of skull to tip of nose".
9. Which form of hereditary obsessive compulsive disorder is most commonly seen in the bull terrier breed?

Answer: spinning

Spinning, or obsessive tail chasing, is an hereditary disorder commonly seen in bull terriers. In extreme cases, the dog may spend his entire waking hours spinning, sometimes grabbing and damaging the tail. In the worst case scenario he may be put to sleep.
A veterinarian can prescribe Clomicalm (clomipramine) or Prozac to treat the disorder. The world's leading researcher on spinning, Alice Moon-Fanelli, also recommends a minimum of 45 minutes vigorous activity per day for affected dogs.
10. There is another variety of bull terrier, recognised as a breed in its own right. What is it?

Answer: bull terrier (miniature)

During my time of involvement with the breed, I have frequently received calls from the public asking where they can buy an "Australian bull terrier" or an "American straight-nose bull terrier" and other variations which do not exist!

The bull terrier (miniature) - also known as the miniature bull terrier - does exist, however. The breed standard is identical to that of the bull terrier, with the exception that dog's height should not exceed 35.5 centimetres (14 inches).
