Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Scottish Terrier made its way to America in 1883. Name the man who is credited with bringing them to the US.

Answer: John Naylor

In 1860, the term Scottish Terrier referred to all terriers bred in Scotland. In 1883, a standard for the "Hard Haired Scotch Terrier", later to be known as our own lovable Scottie, was written. John Naylor brought the first Scotties to the US that very year. Their names were Tam Glen and Bonnie Belle.
2. True or False: The first Scottish Terrier Club was established in England, not Scotland.

Answer: True

The club was established in England in the 1880s, and a similar club was established in Scotland a year later.
3. Which of the following is an acceptable trait according to the American Kennel Club Breed Standard?

Answer: Thick body

Scotties are short, somewhat stocky, but dignified dogs. They should have thick bodies, laid-back shoulders, a high set tail carried erectly and a wiry outer coat.
4. According to the American Kennel Club, which of the following is NOT an acceptable color for the Scottish Terrier?

Answer: White

While wheaten Scotties can be a pale color, they are definitely NOT white. Brindle coats are black, brown, or gray mottled coats. A sprinkling of white hairs in either black or brindle coats is acceptable. Any other white is allowed only on the chest or chin.
5. A statue in Washington DC immortalizes Fala, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Scottie. FDR wasn't the only president to have Scotties. Of the following pairs of Scottish Terriers, which did NOT belong to a president or former president of the US?

Answer: Stasi and Negus

Telek and Caacie were President Dwight Eisenhower's scotties. President Ronald Reagan had Scotch and Soda. Barney and Miss Beazley are President George W. Bush's dogs. President Teddy Roosevelt also had a Scottie, named Jessie, and after FDR and Fala's deaths, Eleanor Roosevelt had another Scottie named Maggie. Stasi and Negus were the scotties of Eva Braun, Adolf Hitler's mistress.
6. Scotties were bred to hunt badgers, foxes and other ground-dwelling animals.

Answer: True

Almost all nuisance animals one might find around the Scottish countryside are fair game for the Scottie. In fact, their large chest and lungs, sturdy tail and strong forelegs are all used for "going to ground" on badgers, foxes, rabbits, etc. The strong forelegs help to enlarge burrow openings, the large lungs help the dog to breathe with its head in a hole, and if your Scottie's front half is down a burrow, sometimes the tail is the only way to get him back out.
7. In the early thirties Marjorie Flack wrote a short series of children's books featuring a Scottie. What is the name of the Scottie?

Answer: Angus

Angus made his debut in 1930 in "Angus and the Ducks". "Angus and the Cat" was released in 1931 and 1932 got "Angus Lost".
8. What well-known Disney 1955 movie featured the first appearance of a Scottie named Jock?

Answer: Lady and the Tramp

Jock was the quintessential Scottie. He was brusque but affectionate, hard-nosed and wilful. He knew what needed to be done and was more than willing to do it, and he never gave up. Jock also made a brief appearance in '101 Dalmatians', in 1961.
9. A comic strip featured in over 50 newspapers in the US centers around a Scottie, a cat, and their people. Name that comic.

Answer: Raising Duncan

Raising Duncan is a great read. If you don't have it in your local newspaper, check it out at Comics.com!
10. True or False: The Scottie attitude is an important part of the breed.

Answer: True

Absolutely true! The last lines in the current breed standard are "No judge should put to Winners or Best of Breed any Scottish Terrier not showing real terrier character in the ring." The importance placed on this temperment isn't new, either. In the old English standard, it stated "The dog should look willing to go anywhere and do anything." If you know Scotties, you know it isn't just a look.
