Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following statements about the Australian marsupial known as the numbat is true?

Answer: They do not have a pouch.

The numbat is a diurnal marsupial that spends most of its life on or below the ground. They will occasionally climb trees for protection or when hunting for their favorite food, termites. Numbats are solitary animals except when mating or when a female is raising babies in her underground burrow.

The numbat is one of the few marsupials that does not have a pouch. Numbat babies attach themselves to their mother's teats where they remain hidden by her long hair.
2. What type of animal is the fascinating narwhal?

Answer: Whale

The narwhal is a very unique whale. Unlike many whales who migrate, narwhals spend their lives in the frigid waters off of Greenland, Canada, Russia and Norway. Male narwhals sport an elongated spiral tooth that can be 10 ft. (3m) long. The narwhal hunts around the edges of ice floes where they prey upon cod, halibut, shrimp, and squid.
3. The Asian antelope known as the nilgai is thought to be vermin in many areas of India. In spite of this, their populations have remained fairly stable because of which of the following reasons?

Answer: Locals think it is a type of cow, giving it a sacred status.

The nilgai is a rather unusual looking Asian antelope that are found mostly in India. The local Hindu population believe they are a type of cow (bovine) and are thus sacred and not to be killed. The nilgai is known for having great sexual dimorphism. Adult males are a dark bluish gray while the females are light brown with white stripes on their sides. Males sport spiral horns while the females have none.
4. Which of these options best describes the diet of the mammal known as a noctule?

Answer: Beetles, moths and ants

The noctule is a large bat found in Europe, western areas of Asia, and northern Africa. The diet of the noctule usually consists of flying ants, moths, and beetles. Although it loves the woodlands, the noctule can be found in many urban areas. The Austrian cities of Hamburg and Vienna have populations in the thousands.
5. The nine-banded armadillo is sometimes used in studies about which of the following diseases?

Answer: Leprosy

The nine-banded armadillo lives from southern South America up into southern and central regions of the U.S. They are hunted in many areas for their meat and because they are thought of as vermin. They are the only mammal other than humans that is susceptible to leprosy and they are often caught to be used in studies attempting to eradicate this debilitating disease.

They are nocturnal and lead solitary lives except when mating and raising young.
6. In which of these countries would you be most likely to stumble upon a nabarlek?

Answer: Australia

Native to Australia, the nabarlek is also known a the pygmy rock wallaby. This small, gray marsupial is a nocturnal grazer found in small regions in the very northern areas of the island. They have strong back legs that allow them to hop and jump, and their muscular tail is used for balance.

They swallow their food without chewing and will later regurgitate a cud and chew it. They get most of their moisture from the plants that they eat and are rarely seen drinking.
7. The small primate known as nagapies are exclusively found on the Galapagos Islands.

Answer: False

Nagapies are nocturnal monkeys found in central and southern areas of the African continent. They have large eyes and ears which aid them in their nocturnal activities. They feed upon insects, fruits, and tree sap. They have extraordinary jumping skills and are able to ambulate by jumping like a kangaroo, as well as walking and running on four legs.

Their adaptability has allowed them to have one of the most stable populations on the planet.
8. The North Atlantic right whale has large bumpy patches of rough skin on their heads called what?

Answer: Callosities

The North Atlantic right whale is a large baleen whale that makes its home in the cold waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. They are a stocky whale, very dark gray to black in color. They have no dorsal fin and bumpy patches of rough skin known as callosities on their heads.

These callosities will thicken and layers will fall off, but the callosities are permanent are unique to each individual whale. These growths usually appear white in color and are used to identify each whale in conservation efforts.

This is vitally important as there were less than 500 of these magnificent mammals at the turn of the 21st century.
9. Nilgiri tahr is a mountain mammal found exclusively in the Nilgiri hills of which country?

Answer: India

The Nilgiri tahr can be found the southern, mountainous regions of India. There is some disagreement as to which genus that this animal belongs. It is sometimes called a Nilgiri Ibex, but genetically this animal appears to be more closely related to sheep, than to either ibex or goats. Trophy hunting almost lead to the extinction of this nimble animal.

It is estimated that the population of Nilgiri tahr dropped to as few as 130 animals at the turn of the 20th century.
10. Which of the following is an alternate name for the mammal known as a nutria?

Answer: Coypu

Nutria are aquatic rodents that are more adapted to an aquatic life than one on land. They have webbed feet and a thick fur that has made them popular species to grow on domestic fur farms. Their diet consists of snails, mussels, and aquatic plants of many kinds.

They reproduce prolifically, with an adult female producing three litters a year. Native at one time to South America, they have now spread all over North America. In many areas the nutria is known as a river rat and is looked at as a pest.

They tear up the ground near waterways, damage crops and roads, and strip areas of all vegetation.
