Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I know what you're saying. "Pandas aren't evil - they're so cute and cuddly. They've never attacked humans." Is this true?

Answer: No

On 21 January 1999, a defenseless female worker fell into a panda enclosure at the Wolong Panda Reservation. The panda slashed one of her thighs and then started eating her alive by chewing on her other leg.
2. Which of these weapons does the vicious panda NOT have in its arsenal?

Answer: Sharp needle-like teeth

Pandas use their claws to climb trees and kill their prey. The modified wrist bone acts similarly to an opposable thumb and is used to tear the appendages off of the still live bamboo and grab small animals to gnaw on. Their vision is used to stalk prey in the dark conditions of the bamboo forest.
3. The panda menace once invaded most of Southeast Asia. Currently, the pandas have consolidated their forces and taken what part of China as a stronghold?

Answer: Mountainous areas of the South

The panda currently roams in the temperate mountain regions in South China. A commonly quoted figure for the panda population is less than 1000, but don't let that fool you - those figures are twenty years old. The panda infestation may be much larger today.
4. As part of their diabolical plan to confuse the world, they have created controversy as to what animals they are related to. What are the pandas' closest relatives?

Answer: Raccoons and Bears

Currently the panda is listed under the family Ursidae (bear) based on DNA tests. Similar tests a couple decades ago placed the panda in the family Procyonidae (raccoons). The panda has the most malicious character of both, the temperament of a bear and the dexterity of a raccoon - a deadly combination.
5. The panda was noted for its prey stalking ability in 1870 when Alphonse Milne-Edwards named the panda after this accomplished (yet diminutive) hunter.

Answer: Cats

The panda is called Ailuropoda or "cat paw like". This is similar to the Chinese name for the panda - Daxiongmao, the "large bear cat".
If you hear your cat in the living room then realize, "I don't have a cat!" it's already too late - you're panda food.
6. Which of these social habits do pandas have? - yet again showing their evil nature.

Answer: They are loners and solitary creatures, like so many other serial killers.

Pandas tend to group together only during the mating season when many males vie for the attention of one female. The female attracts the male in a most disgusting manner. She urinates to make a trail for the male to follow. I'm glad humans don't attract mates like this.
7. Pandas are facing starvation since they eat only one type of bamboo and that species is due to go dormant in a few years.

Answer: False

Unfortunately no. Pandas eat between 25 and 30 species of bamboo. As the bamboo dies out in one area, the pandas migrate to another area. This means that they invade areas inhabited by poor humans looking for food. This is kind of like if you ran out of food so you ransack your neighbor's refrigerator.
8. The panda is (of course) the personification of a major controversy in the United States today. The two books, "The Panda's Thumb" and "Of Pandas and People", take opposing views on what issue?

Answer: Evolution vs. Creationism

"The Panda's Thumb" is a seminal work by Stephen Jay Gould promoting modern day evolution theory. "Of Pandas and People" revamps creationism as a "scientific" theory called "intelligent design," which is just an updated form of the teleological arguments supposedly proving God exists.

The battle of whether or not "intelligent design" should be taught as a valid scientific theory or even IF it is a scientific theory was discussed in Ohio (where, fortunately, there are no pandas) during 2005.
9. The panda is infamous for clearcutting the bamboo forests in China. Coincidentally, this organization adopted the panda as its logo and advocates the logging of Tasmanian old-growth forests.

Answer: World Wildlife Fund

WWF Australia published a paper in 2004 called "A Blueprint for the Forest Industry and Vegetation Management in Tasmania". WWF claims that this logging is necessary to prevent catastrophic forest fires while other conservationists contend that this stance undermines a 25 year effort to preserve these forests.
10. How are pandas classified by their eating habits (not their Linnaean classification)?

Answer: Omnivores. They'll shove anything into their slobbering maws.

Despite the myth that they only eat bamboo, they will eat other plants, honey, fish, insects, rotting carcasses, and small defenseless animals if given a chance.
