Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What three provinces do pandas live in?

Answer: Shaanxi, Sichuan and Gansu

Giant pandas are limited to only three of the provinces of China. The bamboo in these provinces is scarce and this is one reason why pandas are slowly becoming extinct.
2. Which of these is the giant panda's scientific name?

Answer: Ailuropoda melanoleuca

This scientific name simply means, 'Black and white cat-footed animal'. The panda is likened to a cat by the Chinese. Ailurus fulgens is the red panda, Tringa melanoleuca is the greater yellowlegs and Melanoleuca strictipes is a species of mushroom.
3. What colour(s) are panda cubs when they are first born?

Answer: Pink

Pandas are pink at birth and have sparse, short white hairs. They cry often and very loudly at this time and need a lot of care from their mother.
4. What do the Chinese call the giant panda?

Answer: Big bear cat

'Big bear cat' in Chinese means 'panda'. Another nickname for the panda is 'Bamboo bear'.
5. What country did pandas previously live in?

Answer: Burma

Giant pandas used to live in the country of Burma. We know this because panda fossils have been found there.
6. Where are the baby panda cubs born?

Answer: In dens or caves

Panda cubs usually weigh about 5 ounces when they are newborns. The mothers are about 900 times bigger than the newborn cubs.
7. Which of these groups are all enemies of giant panda cubs?

Answer: Snow leopards, eagles and wild dogs

Adult giant pandas have few natural enemies, but the baby cubs have a few that are willing to grab them from their home and have them for dinner. Snow leopards and wild dogs are likely to snatch a wandering cub if it is left alone. An eagle is just as likely to swoop down from the nest and have a baby cub for dinner.
8. In what position do pandas usually eat?

Answer: Sitting up

Pandas usually eat upright in a position quite the same as a human sitting on the floor. This posture leaves the front paws free to grasp the bamboo with their elongated 'thumbs' while they eat it.
9. What sound does an adult giant panda make?

Answer: They bleat

This is just their way of greeting others. While they bleat, the baby panda cubs make little whimpering noises until they are older and learn to bleat.
10. What is unusual about the giant panda's eyes?

Answer: Their pupils are slits

All other bears have round pupils, but the exception is the giant panda. The pupils of a giant panda's eyes are slits like cat's eyes.
