Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which dog breed has ears that were described by Shakespeare as "Ears which sweep away the morning dew"?

Answer: Basset Hound

This description can be found in Act 4 of "A Midsummers Night Dream". The long ears of the basset hound help sweep scents back to the dog's nose. As puppies, these ears provide something to trip over and it is not uncommon to see basset puppies running and then falling down in an awkward manner when they step on one of their ears.

The basset hound has slow reflexes for a hunting dog which is offset by their excellent sense of smell. The fact that it is somewhat slow on foot actually makes it a better choice for hunters who are on foot.

They have a much more silent approach and are much less likely to scare the prey away. Basset hounds can have large litters of over ten puppies at a time. They make wonderful house pets and are excellent with children and other animals.

As they tend to be couch potatoes when kept inside, they should be walked at least twice a day. Always use a leash with a basset hound, as they will run away if they smell something that interests them. They are very single minded and will track until they are completely exhausted and unable to walk.

Their short hair makes for easy grooming, and training requires a firm hand.
2. Which of the following breeds was bred for many reasons including the use of its fur for making coats and as a food source?

Answer: Chow chow

The beautiful chow chow comes originally from China, where it was used as a work dog, a hunting dog, and for its fur and meat. This is a breed for an experienced owner as chows often believe themselves to be the boss and will attempt to run the household.

Their beautiful fur comes in many different colors with red or black being the most common. They are noted for their beautiful purplish-black tongue. The chow needs to socialized early and training should start as soon as possible. These dogs need space and are not an ideal dog for apartment living or for homes with small children. With firm, diligent training and the right home, the chow can be a wonderful family pet, who is both protective and affectionate.
3. Which of the following jobs would an Irish setter NOT excel at?

Answer: Guard dog

The sweet, affectionate Irish setter does not have the disposition to make it a good guard dog. They are likely to greet a burglar with a wagging tail and smile. This hunting dog has a beautiful red to chestnut double coat. Their soft fur needs to be brushed frequently to keep it from matting.

They are VERY affectionate and need lots of human interaction. Without this attention they are likely to become destructive as many of them seem to believe that any attention is better than no attention. They get along with small children and other pets but are not a good apartment dog.

They need room to run, but must be trained early to returning to their owner when called. This is an intelligent dog that can be taught many tricks, has a wonderful disposition, and makes an excellent therapy dog or family companion.
4. What beautiful white working breed is depicted in this photo?

Answer: Samoyed

The beautiful Samoyed is a devoted, gentle, intelligent dog. Early training is a must, as many Samoyeds have a problem with chewing things if they are bored. They have profuse, white coats and friendly black eyes. Care must be taken if bringing a Samoyed into a home with other small pets as they have a strong herding instinct which they will use on the other pets, and small children as well.

This medium sized dog can adjust to apartment living provided they are given plenty of exercise. They do not do well in warm temperatures because of their thick coats.

The Samoyed originated in Siberia where is was used as a working dog usually used to pull sleds and to herd reindeer. They are happiest when they have a job to do. They get their names from the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia.
5. The short-legged Pembroke Welsh corgi was developed for which of the following purposes?

Answer: Herding

The Pembroke Welsh corgi is a herding dog. Originating in Wales, this dog is solidly built and has little to no tail. It can come in a variety of colors and sports a dense coat which protects it against the cold weather that was often found in the area. Unlike many herding dogs who bark and run around the animals in order to herd them together, the corgi nips at the back of their heels in order to get them to comply.

They have been used for herding cattle, sheep and ponies. Their low stature helps them roll out of the way of kicking cattle.

The corgi can live in an apartment as long as it is provided with long walks daily. They put on weight easily and the exercise is necessary for both their physical and mental health. This is an intelligent breed that needs an owner with a firm hand. If the owner does not show the dog that he is boss, this breed will attempt to herd the other pets, all children in the house, and even the owner himself.

As a hint, if you have problems telling the Pembroke Welsh corgi from the Cardigan Welsh corgi, just remember the Pem'broke' doesn't have a tail because it 'broke' off.
6. What is the most common nickname for the German breed known as the Weimaraner?

Answer: Gray Ghost

The Weimaraner is a beautiful gray, short-haired, working breed. Its lovely coat is accentuated by its lovely amber eyes. This breed requires an experienced owner and makes an excellent watchdog. The Weimaraner generally does not do well in homes with small pets such as rabbits, hamsters or guinea pigs as they were bred to hunt and will likely attack and kill this type of household pet.

This breed needs lots of training to overcome its natural urge to jump on people and can take a while to learn simple commands such as sit.

They are a high energy dog that can make a wonderful pet if they have a strong owner who will act as a pack leader and help the Weimeraner learn to control its excitement.
7. While you might think that this is an Old English sheepdog, it is not. In fact it is which of the following types of collie?

Answer: Bearded Collie

The Bearded collie is an intelligent breed, first developed in the British Isles. This affectionate, high energy dog is known for his pleasant disposition. Most of the training needed for this dog involves controlling their enthusiasm. They need plenty of activity and play in order to keep their inquisitive minds occupied. Being left alone, with nothing to do, can bring out destructive behaviors.

Their long coats require regular, almost daily, brushing and they are known for shedding. This breed needs a strong, experienced owner who will be a leader. Wonderful family pets, this breed does well with children, and other family pets.
8. What is the name of the largest of the spaniel breeds?

Answer: Clumber

The Clumber spaniel originated in the United Kingdom in the early 19th century. Its exact background is a matter of speculation. It is the tallest and the heaviest of the spaniel breeds and sports a white coat with sprinklings of red throughout. It has a wonderful nose that is often pinkish in color as opposed the black nose seen in most spaniel breeds.

It is used for hunting fowl and is known for its stamina and determined disposition. The Clumber spaniel needs regular exercise and can live in almost any situation.

They are adaptable, affectionate, and do well with children, other pets, and the elderly. They are easily trainable and the use of affection, and gentleness while training is advised. This is not a common breed, but they do make wonderful pets to those homes lucky enough to have them as a family member.
9. The Afghan hound is a type of retriever that comes only in various shades of crème and/or white.

Answer: False

The Afghan is a sight hound bred for hunting a huge variety of animals. Its long luxurious fur comes in almost any color and requires daily brushing. They are born to run and need areas where they can run without a leash and remain safe. They are a calm dog with a gentle disposition, but may not be the right dog for an owner looking for a super-affectionate breed or for one that does not shed.

They have a noble, majestic appearance and can be somewhat shy and submissive. This ancient breed has been depicted on cave paintings and pottery dating over 4,000 years old.

While this is a hunting dog that specializes in tracking, sighting and racing, it is NOT a retriever.
10. What is the country of origin for the French bulldog?

Answer: England

Despite being called a French bulldog, this lovable breed originated in England. Frenchies, as they nicknamed, can be stubborn and difficult to train for an inexperienced trainer. They make intelligent, affectionate, and very sweet companions. This breed must often be whelped by cesarean section due to the large size of their heads.

They often drool and slobber, and love to chase anything or anyone. They have a short coat that comes in many colors and are very easy to groom. These dogs are natural clowns and love to be the center of attention. Once they figure out that they can make you laugh by doing something, they will do it over and over.

This is a very active dog that really does need its own yard to run around in and burn off energy. They do not do well in high heat and owners need to watch for signs of heat stroke.
