3. The Seeing Eye uses three main breeds of dogs. Which one do they not use from this list?

Answer: Border Collies

The Seeing Eye has tried many different breeds and found that Golden Retriever, all three colors of Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Labrador/Golden retriever cross make the best guides. They also sometimes use boxers for people with allergies.
4. The first person to receive a guide dog changed its name to Buddy. What was the dog's original name?

Answer: Kiss

The dog that he received was named Kiss originally. But he changed the name to Buddy because he was embarrassed by the name.
5. Why did the first person to receive a guide dog change its name to Buddy?

Answer: Because this dog would go with him everywhere and be his Buddy

He decided that since this dog would go with him every where the dog would be his Friend and buddy.
6. A 4H family raises and takes care of the puppy.

Answer: True

A family that wants to raise a Seeing Eye Dog must agree to attend club meetings at their local 4H branch, where they organize trips to go on to expose the puppy and learn training tips.
7. The 4H family gets to name their own dog.

Answer: False

The pups are named before they come to the families by "litter letters" which means that all the pups' names from that litter start with the same letter such as the M litter where the dogs' names are Molly and Mandy and Mike. Some of the names are interesting! Also, by making a donation to The Seeing Eye you can name a puppy.
8. How long does the blind person stay at The Seeing Eye to receive training with their guide dog?

Answer: about 4 weeks

A first time recipient of a guide dog stays at The Seeing Eye for about 4 weeks where they receive their own room. A gym, library, lounge, and dining room are available to them. Once a year Puppy Raising Families are invited to come tour the beautiful campus.
9. To raise a Seeing Eye puppy (USA regulations) you must...

Answer: be at least 9 years old

You must be at least 9 years old to raise a Seeing Eye puppy and have your parents' permission because it really is a family project. It is good to have other pets, though not necessary, because then the pup will become used to other animals and not become distracted by them. You don't have to have had a dog before because you can get all the training you need from your 4H club. Raising a Seeing Eye Dog is good to see if you really want to own a dog of your own.
10. The Seeing Eye pays all vet bills that the family receives while the dog is in their care.

Answer: True

The Seeing Eye pays for the vet bills and sends a food stipend to help cover the cost of feeding. You do have to pay for the couch or power cord they might chew through when you aren't watching them though.
11. Adults cannot raise guide dogs.

Answer: False

People over the age of 9 can raise a guide puppy. Many adults who can handle a dog raise them. It's good for older people because they can stay around kids and having the dog keeps them active.
12. Where is The Seeing Eye located?

Answer: Morristown, NJ

The Seeing Eye was located in Tennessee for a short time, but the weather was not good for year round outdoor training.
13. Not all Seeing Eye guides make the program to graduate to full guides.

Answer: True

The dog has to pass a medical test and a training test. If the dog fails to pass either of these the family that raised it has the option to take the dog back or it can go on to do a different job such as become a customs dog. The Seeing Eye has a long waiting list for families that want Seeing Eye dogs that don't make it because their breeding and training is so superb.
14. What command do the seeing eye puppies not learn while they are with their 4H families?

Answer: heel

The 4H families teach their dogs among other things to forward (walk on a leash in front with slight pull), rest (like a stay) come, sit, down on leash as well as off. The pups are never taught to heel when they are with their 4H families. This is so that they learn to walk in front to guide.

When they get back to The Seeing Eye for their formal training, they will learn to heel in case the blind person is walking with a sighted person to guide them along side such as in a place they have never been, so that the dog doesn't get in the way or get confused.
15. Because guide dogs are trained not to bite or be vicious it's OK to pet them without asking the blind person.

Answer: False

If you pet a guide dog without asking, it's like taking the steering wheel away from someone driving a car. It's very dangerous to do and it puts you, the dog and the blind person all at risk because the dog is distracted. If you do ask the blind person, they may say no.

Not because they don't like you, but because the guide dogs only get praise as a reward for working and if someone else was giving them their reward they may not want to work.
