Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In December 1997, a young lioness escaped from Florida's JungleLand Wildlife Park while zookeepers were adjusting her flooded cage. What name, inspired by Disney's 1994 movie "The Lion King", did she have?

Answer: Nala

After the lioness escaped from the small zoo near Kissimmee, Florida, just a few miles from Disney World, a search involving both helicopters and people on the ground commenced. The declawed lion was said not to be a threat to the public. The search lasted for two days before the animal was cornered, shot with tranquilizers, and returned safely to the zoo.

JungleLand has since closed due to allegations of animal abuse and inadequate enclosures.
2. After short-circuiting an electric fence and creating a ladder, Karta the orangutan was able to get free from her exhibit in 2009 at the Adelaide Zoo in what country?

Answer: Australia

Karta, the twenty-seven-year-old orangutan, was able to short-circuit the electric fence by pushing sticks into the wires at the zoo in Adelaide, Australia. She then piled up shrubs and roots to create a ladder which gained her access to the top of another wall where she sat for half-an-hour, going no farther.

The zoo was quickly evacuated even though there was no fear she would harm anyone. While zookeepers with tranquilizer guns stood by, she returned to her exhibit on her own.
3. When Goldie the golden eagle escaped the London Zoo in 1965, he caused a nationwide sensation. His adventure was covered by the media and traffic jams were caused by people coming to view him in Regent's Park, where he spent most of his time. What was eventually used to lure him back after he had been free for twelve days?

Answer: a dead rabbit

Goldie flew away from the zoo in London, England in March 1965 while his cage was being cleaned. The zoo received many letters and phone calls about the situation and crowds gathered to see him in the park. Many different capturing techniques were attempted, including using equipment borrowed from the Royal Navy and an Ethiopian bird pipe. Eventually, a zookeeper lured him back with a dead rabbit. He was recaptured in a healthy condition.

He escaped again in December 1965 for four days.
4. In early 2011, a young African penguin named Leona got out of her enclosure at the Munster Zoo in Germany, but she didn't get far before ending up in an enclosure with what other animals?

Answer: lions

Leona somehow got out of her ice-covered pool, walked down some paths, and wound up in with the lions. Luckily for the three-month-old penguin, the lions were dozing in a heated shelter and paid her no attention. Zookeepers were able to lead her out with a trail of herring.
5. Unfortunately, not all animal escapes end happily with no harm done to the animals or humans. An example of an escape gone wrong happened in 2007 when a Siberian tiger named Tatiana attacked three people, killing one, after getting out of her cage at which of these United States zoos?

Answer: San Francisco Zoo

Just after closing time on December 25, 2007, the tiger, Tatiana, escaped her exhibit and attacked three young men, one of whom, Carlos Eduardo Sousa Jr., died at the scene. It is believed she was able to get out by jumping or climbing over the moat wall. After the incident, the wall was found to be shorter than the recommended height of sixteen-and-a-half feet. Witnesses have reported that the men who were attacked had been taunting her just prior to her attacking. There is also evidence that they had been drinking and smoking marijuana. Police were called in and ended up shooting the animal dead.

This was not Tatiana's first attack on humans. Nearly a year earlier, she had clawed and bitten a zookeeper's arm through the bars of a cage.
6. In November 2013 at the Colchester Zoo in England, five timber wolves got out of their enclosure. Unfortunately, this dangerous incident did not end well. What happened?

Answer: Three of the wolves were shot dead.

On the morning of November 26, 2013, zoo staff at the zoo in Colchester, England discovered five of their six timber wolves missing. They had gotten out through a damaged portion of fence. The public were not originally told that the animals were on the loose, but rather that there was a medical emergency. One of the wolves returned on its own and another was shot with a tranquilizer dart. Sadly, the other three wolves were killed.

This was due to the fact that tranquilizers would have taken too long to take the animals down, and they were considered a danger to the public.
7. What type of venomous snake slithered out of its enclosure at the Bronx Zoo in New York City in March 2011?

Answer: Egyptian cobra

On March 25, 2011, an adolescent Egyptian cobra was discovered missing from its off-exhibit enclosure at the Bronx Zoo. The snake became well-known in the media and even had a Twitter account dedicated to it, which has gained over 170,000 followers. A few days later, on the 31st, the snake was found in a non-public part of the reptile house. After an online naming contest, the cobra was given the name Mia, after "missing in action".

Two other animals escaped their exhibit at the Bronx Zoo in 2011, a green peafowl and a lesser kudu, both of which were returned without incident.
8. Gaston the brown fur seal got out of his tank at the Prague Zoo in the Czech Republic in 2002 and swam around 190 miles into Germany before being recaptured. How was he able to escape?

Answer: He swam out of his flooded tank.

In August 2002 floods due to an excess of rain occurred in many countries in Europe. The water also affected the Prague Zoo, drowning many animals. But in the case of Gaston, the twelve-year-old seal, the flood gave him a chance at freedom. He swam along the Vltava and Elbe Rivers for five days before being recaptured near Dresden, Germany. Sadly, the trip negatively affected the seal causing him to die from exhaustion and infection on the way back to the zoo.
9. Visitors at the Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands watched in horror on May 18, 2007 as a male Western gorilla named Bokito jumped a thirteen foot ditch to attack a woman. Was the woman he attacked chosen randomly?

Answer: No

The woman whom eleven-year-old Bokito attacked that day at the Rotterdam Zoo, or Diergaarde Blijdorp, was not chosen randomly. Her name was Petronella Yvonne de Horde and she visited him about four times a week, during which time she would touch the glass between them and smile at him while making eye contact. Even though zookeepers warned her that doing this could be interpreted as an aggressive display, she continued to do so, claiming she had a bond with the animal. Unfortunately this was not the case as seen by the attack in May 2007 when the gorilla dragged her around, breaking her arm and biting her. While he was out, the gorilla also entered a restaurant and injured three other people. Eventually, he was shot with a tranquilizer gun and placed back in his cage.

Even after the attack, Petronella Yvonne de Horde still claimed to like Bokito, referring to him as her "darling".
10. At the Kansas City Zoo in April 2014 seven chimpanzees were able to get out of their enclosure and wander around an area open only to zoo staff. How were they able to escape?

Answer: They used a tree branch as a ladder.

After breaking a six-foot branch from a tree, a chimpanzee was able to climb over the fence and then convinced six others to follow it. The Missouri zoo went into a code red situation where guests were kept inside buildings. The incident lasted about an hour and a half before the chimps were lured back into their exhibit with treats, including malted milk balls.

In February 2012, two gorillas also escaped their enclosures at the Kansas City Zoo when a door was left open. They were quickly recaptured with no harm done to them or any humans.
