Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Duck char
Answer: Deckchair
Offered by many resorts for visitors to sit on, deckchairs are fiendishly designed to frustrate anyone tempted to try one out. Made of canvas, with a wooden frame, they either trap your fingers or collapse. On a bad day, they do both.
2. Eyes lull lea
Answer: Ice lolly
After the battle with the deckchair, our unwary visitor could buy an ice lolly from the nearest vendor. By the time he or she gets back to the family, it will have melted all over the purchaser's hands and clothes.
3. Dunk ear eyed
Answer: Donkey ride
Donkey rides are not as common as they used to be, as animal welfare has placed restrictions on the use of donkeys for this purpose. The tradition dates back to Victorian times in the UK.
4. Puddle inn pull
Answer: Paddling pool
Aimed at the smallest children, i.e. none of The Rockettes, the paddling pool provides a safe environment for the toddlers to enjoy getting their feet wet without having to cope with waves.
5. See gals
Answer: Seagulls
While you will probably see gals too, the seagulls will try and rob you of any food which you try to eat while at the seaside. They're not fussy - anything will do.
6. Pram in aid
Answer: Promenade
Another relic of the Victorian age, the promenade (usually abbreviated to 'prom') runs alongside the beach and allows the visitors to stroll along without getting their feet covered in sand. It can also be called an esplanade, but promenade is more common in the UK.
7. Sin gloss is
Answer: Sunglasses
On the rare occasions when the sun shines, sunglasses will be needed to protect your eyes. The glare of the sun can cause damage to the eyes, although many celebrities are more likely to wear sunglasses to keep a low profile (or possibly draw attention to themselves...).
8. Paddle low
Answer: Pedalo
Best described as a bicycle to be used on the water, the pedalo can be used either by one or two people. It is propelled by pedals, hence the name, and is known as a paddle boat in other English speaking countries.
9. Nub blini scone tossed
Answer: Knobbly knees contest
The knobbly knees contest was a staple of the Butlin's holiday camps, with the men rolling up their trouser legs to offer their knees for judgement. It was also a popular topic for the holiday postcard.
10. A mews meant okayed
Answer: Amusement arcade
Designed to make visitors part with their hard earned cash, especially on the many wet days of an English summer, the amusement arcade has various slot machines and other games. The costs are high and the prizes are low, and there is only one winner, which won't be you.
