Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) was a German novelist and poet. A Nobel laureate for literature, he wrote "Siddhartha," "Narcissus and Goldmund," "Demian," "Steppenwolf," and many other works. When I was a teenager EVERYONE was reading Hesse--it was a kind of cult.

Espresso, which is made by forcing steaming hot water through finely-ground coffee, is usually served in a demitasse with sugar and/or a lemon twist. It's very strong.

The word CAPPUCCINO means "little monk's hood" in Italian. This coffee drink consists of one shot of espresso topped with a "hood" of steamed milk foam. Often the foam is topped with a sprinkling of cinnamon, powdered chocolate, or both. Cappuccinos usually come in thick china cups placed on saucers.

If you pour the espresso in nice and slowly (following the milk), the drink will separate into three stripes: a white one at the top, a beige one in the middle, and a darker one at the bottom.
