Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take a North American fish with a long snout, and the direction opposite to SW. Then insert 'on' for a river in France.

Answer: Garonne

Gar and NE with 'on' inserted. The gar favours shallow water and is found mainly in the south-eastern regions of North America, such as Louisiana and the coast of Mexico. The Garonne is a river of northern Spain and southwestern France. It flows from the Pyrenees to the port of Bordeaux.
2. Take an insect and the chemical symbol for silver. Then add the ninth letter of the alphabet and a word meaning 'produce words in tune', and insert 'on' for a word meaning 'evoking hostility' (English spelling).

Answer: Antagonising

Ant, ag, i and sing with 'on' inserted. Ants are common insects found in our gardens and known for their industry. while ag is the symbol for silver, being short for argentum. The ninth letter is i and if you produce a melody with words you sing.

Putting all these together produces the word antagonising, meaning annoying somebody. The American spelling would work as well, with a slightly different clue for zing, but I'm British.
3. Take a word meaning pleased, the abbreviation for a saint and the letter for the direction in which the sun rises, and insert 'on' to find the name of a former British Prime Minister.

Answer: Gladstone

Glad, ST and E with 'on' inserted. Glad means feeling happy (remember Pollyanna and the 'glad' game?), saint is abbreviated as st, which could also be short for street, and the sun rises in the east.

All these put together with 'on' included give you the name of the four time Prime Minister Gladstone, who also has a sturdy travel bag named after him.
4. Take C and add a short name for Sidney. Then add a TV hospital programme and the past tense of eat, and insert 'on' for a word meaning thoughtful.

Answer: Considerate

C, sid, ER and ate, with 'on' inserted. Most people named Sidney find their name abbreviated to Sid, while 'ER' was one of the longer running hospital based dramas. The past tense of eat is ate, and putting all the clues together and putting 'on' after the first letter of C creates the word considerate.

Someone who is considerate is aware of other people's feelings and takes care not to hurt their feelings by thoughtlessness.
5. Take a word for a place where you can buy alcoholic drinks, the chemical symbol for cerium and the abbreviation for Los Angeles. Then insert 'on' for a city in Spain.

Answer: Barcelona

Bar, Ce and LA with 'on' inserted. A bar is where alcohol is served - in the UK it is found inside a pub while in America a bar tends to refer to the whole establishment. Cerium is a metallic element with the symbol Ce while Los Angeles is often referred to just as LA.

Taking these clues and adding 'on' creates the name of Barcelona, located on the Mediterranean Sea on Spain's eastern coast.
6. Take the abbreviation for Colorado and a word meaning to lean to one side, especially of a ship, and insert 'on' for a 'settler in a new land'.

Answer: Colonist

CO and list with 'on' inserted. The postal abbreviation for Colorado is CO and a ship is said to list if it is no longer sitting upright in the water. Adding 'on' to these two answers creates the word colonist, a pioneer who settles in a new region or land.
7. Take a word meaning against and the abbreviation for 'General Electric' and insert 'on' for a woman from Greek mythology.

Answer: Antigone

Anti and GE with 'on' inserted. Anti is derived from the Greek language and means to be in opposition, while General Electric is usually referred to as GE. With 'on' inserted, you get the name of Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus in Greek myth.
8. Take Michael Stipe's group, an abbreviation for street and what I hope you will do to this quiz after playing it. Insert 'on' for a word meaning 'to take issue with' or protest.

Answer: Remonstrate

REM, st and rate, with 'on' inserted. REM is the band name, taken from the abbreviation for rapid eye movement during sleep, which means someone is dreaming. St, in this instance, is short for street while every player is asked to rate the quiz they've just played to give others an idea of what to expect. Adding 'on' will give you the word remonstrate, which has come to mean arguing, in a polite manner, against what is being proposed.
9. Take a feline, a word expressing position and an abbreviation for 'in charge'. Insert 'on' for a word describing a trance or stupor associated with schizophrenia.

Answer: Catatonic

Cat, at and 'ic', with 'on' inserted. The feline family includes big and small cats, but you only needed one, at describes a location while 'in charge' is shortened to 'ic'. With 'on' included you arrive at catatonic, a disturbance of the mind in which someone is unable to interact with others.
10. Take a French word for 'the', the chemical symbol for argon and an abbreviation for 'ditto'. Then insert 'on' for the name of a Renaissance artist.

Answer: Leonardo

Le, ar and do with 'on' inserted. Le is the French word for the (masculine) while argon's symbol is Ar. Ditto is shortened to 'do' and inserting 'on' gives you the first name of Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo lived from 1452 until 1519 and is remembered for his wide range of interests and the wonderful art he created.
