Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take a large farm animal, add a Teletubby and the eighteenth letter of the English alphabet. Now insert 'we' to find a unit (mostly obsolete) that measures the rate of work.

Answer: Horsepower

Horse plus Po and the letter r, with 'we' inserted gives you horsepower.

Horses were the main form of assistance in farm work prior to the twentieth century, and James Watt used them, specifically draft horses, as a comparison for the output of power from his steam engines. Po is the red Teletubby and r is the eighteenth letter of the alphabet. Horsepower is sometimes still used in connection with motorised vehicles, including cars and lawnmowers.
2. Take a word which has multiple meanings including theatrical scenery and an Egyptian god, and add a well known Scottish lake. Insert 'we' to find a word for one of the basic tastes humans can detect.

Answer: Sweetness

Set plus Ness, with 'we' inserted gives you sweetness.

Set is one of those words which can be used in many ways. As well as the meanings I gave you in the question, it can refer to a group of songs played by a band, a division in a tennis match and a mathematical theory as well as others. Loch Ness is renowned for its monster, although no proof has ever been found of its existence. Sweetness, sourness, umami, bitterness and saltiness are the five generally accepted basic tastes.
3. Take a word meaning 'a long way away' and add an old unit of measurement often used for cloth. Insert 'we' to find a word said on departing.

Answer: Farewell

Far and ell with 'we' inserted gives you farewell.

Far refers to distance, as in 'over the hills and far away'. An ell is a unit of length, derived from the length of a man's arm from elbow to the end of the longest finger. It was also known as a cubit, but that wouldn't fit the clue. The actual length of an ell varied from country to country, and was around 45 inches in the UK - fabric is still sold in this width in the twenty-first century. Farewell means what it says - have a good journey, or fare ye well.
4. Take a word denoting something centrally placed and a word for the rear of a ship. Insert 'we' to find an adjective describing the region of the USA which includes Indiana and Kansas.

Answer: Midwestern

Mid and stern, with 'we' inserted gives you midwestern.

Mid means the middle part of a range, and can refer to anything placed in that position. Midline can be used in typography, midriff is the middle part of the human body and midway is halfway through a journey. Stern is the opposite to the bow of a ship, and is also an adjective meaning severe and unbending.

The Midwest is one of the four official divisions of the USA, for statistical purposes, along with South, Northeast and West.
5. Take the chemical symbol for flerovium, a word denoting a choice (often used with either), a river of Italy and a very old car model. Insert 'we' to come up with a container for growing blooms.

Answer: Flowerpot

Fl, or, Po and T with 'we' inserted leads you to flowerpot.

Flerovium is an artificial element, created in the laboratory and not found in nature. Or can be used with 'either/or' to indicate a choice and the river Po is one of Italy's major rivers, flowing through Turin, among other places. The Ford Model T was an early production car, produced between 1908 to 1927. A flowerpot is used to grow, unsurprisingly, flowers although other plants can also be planted in them.
6. Take a word meaning the same as decay, something you might find covering your roof and a letter denoting one of the three things we are all meant to learn at school. Insert 'we' to come up with a breed of dog.

Answer: Rottweiler

Rot, tile and R, with 'we' inserted, gives you the answer of rottweiler.

Rot is defined as the process of undergoing decomposition, and is sometimes also used to describe nonsense, as in 'tommyrot'. Tiles are used for roofing, and also on walls and floors. The three 'Rs' are reading, writing and arithmetic, which are meant to be the minimum you learn at school. The rottweiler is a German dog, originally developed to herd livestock although it is now more often associated with being a guard dog.
7. Take a preposition which describes a movement in the direction of something and an adornment normally worn on the hand. Insert 'we' to find an adjective used to describe something very tall.

Answer: Towering

To plus ring, with 'we' inserted is towering.

To can be described as the opposite of from: 'we came to the house, having arrived from school'. A ring is a band of, usually, metal which decorates the finger or, occasionally, thumb. Rings can also be worn on toes, on earlobes or sometimes elsewhere on the body. Anything that is towering is very tall, like a skyscraper or a giraffe.
8. Take the chemical symbol for arsenic and another name for a lorry or vehicle for carrying cargo. Insert 'we' to end up with a word describing how you feel when overcome with emotion or admiration.

Answer: Awestruck

As and truck, with 'we' inserted, arrives at awestruck.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element which is poisonous if ingested. It was often used as a method of murder, as in Agatha Christie's novels, since many households kept it to deal with vermin. A truck, more often called a lorry in the United Kingdom, is a large vehicle used to transport large consignments of goods by road. You may be awestruck if you meet your favourite actor or popstar, or by the architecture and decoration of a cathedral, or even in the open air at a natural site such as the Grand Canyon or Mount Everest.
9. Take a word for a male, add the chemical symbol for phosphorus and the heraldic word for gold. Insert 'we' to find the number of people available for, or working on, a particular job.

Answer: Manpower

Man plus P and or, with 'we' inserted gives you manpower.

Man is another word to describe a male, and phosphorus has the chemical symbol P - not to be confused with potassium, which is K. Or is one of the terms used in heraldry, along with gules for red, azure for blue and sable for black.

Manpower is a general term which can be used to describe the number of employees a firm has, or the number needed for a particular task.
10. Take the short name for one of Prince Andrew's daughters and a word meaning to burn or scorch. Insert 'we' to come up with something you might wear on your summer holidays.

Answer: Beachwear

Bea plus char, with 'we' inserted gives you the new word of beachwear.

Princess Beatrice of York is the older of the two daughters Prince Andrew has with his former wife, Sarah. She is often referred to as Bea, and has the interesting birthdate of 8.8.88. To char something is, literally, to reduce it to charcoal, but the word is normally used to refer to a partially burned surface. Beachwear is leisure wear meant to be worn while relaxing on holiday, especially by the seaside.
