Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take one of the blood types, a short name for Richard, the Roman numeral for fifty and the chemical symbol for argon. Insert 'ye' to find a craftsman who could build a house for you.

Answer: Bricklayer

Blood type B, plus rick, l and ar, with 'ye' inserted, gives an answer of bricklayer.

The B+ blood type is, on average, the third most common after O+ and A+. Rick can mean Richard, or a way of storing up hay or even refer to a sprain in part of the body - e.g. to rick one's back. L stands for the number fifty. Argon is a gas used in light bulbs. Bricklayers, unsurprisingly, work with bricks.
2. Take the postcode used for the Swansea area in the UK, and an enemy of a rocker in 1960s Britain. Insert 'ye' to find a breed of dog.

Answer: Samoyed

SA and mod with 'ye' inserted gives an answer of samoyed.

The SA postcodes cover a wide area, extending into Pembrokeshire in the far west of Wales. The mods and rockers caused a great deal of trouble in the early to mid 1960s. The rockers wore leather jackets and rode motorcycles, while the mods wore suits and rode scooters. The clashes between the two groups often took place in seaside resorts in the south of England. The samoyed was bred as a sledding dog in Siberia, and is a strong, sturdy dog with white hair.
3. Take one part of Santa's laugh, the removable top of a jar and Argentina's internet domain code. Insert 'ye' to find another name for a vacationer.

Answer: Holidayer

Ho, lid and ar, with 'ye' inserted gives you the new word of holidayer.

Santa Claus is often depicted as saying 'ho, ho, ho' while jars, and saucepans, often have lids. The saucepan lids are normally easier to remove than those on the jars, in my experience at least. Ar is what follows the dot for websites in Argentina. Holidayer as a word to describe someone on holiday seems to date from the late nineteenth century. Vacationer is probably better known in the USA, while the UK would normally say holidaymaker.
4. Take a short 'thank you', the letter denoting ten in Rome, and the standard score for a golf hole. Insert 'ye' to come up with someone who contributes, probably unwillingly, to government coffers.

Answer: Taxpayer

Ta, X and par, with 'ye' inserted creates the new word of taxpayer.

Ta is 'babytalk' for thank you, and could also relate to tantalum, a region in Thailand and a river in Virginia, USA. The Roman numeral for ten is the letter X, and par is the expected score (number of strokes taken) for a particular golf hole. A taxpayer has to pay a proportion of his or her income to the government. The practice is not new - Roman citizens were taxed on the value of their properties. Income tax was introduced in the UK in 1799 - as a temporary measure.
5. Take one of the indefinite articles and a movement of the head, normally, but not always, denoting agreement. Insert 'ye' to find a word synonymous with 'irritated'.

Answer: Annoyed

An and nod with 'ye' inserted creates annoyed.

The two indefinite articles are 'a' and 'an', while 'the' is the definite article. A nod is a gesture made with the head from the upright position towards the chest. It usually means 'yes' or 'I agree' although, in some cultures, it means the exact opposite. Other synonyms for annoyed are aggravated, displeased and, more informally, miffed.
6. Take the letter which is the name of a science fiction franchise created by Kenneth Johnson, a word which means 'belonging to us', the domain code for Iceland and the Roman numeral for one thousand. Insert 'ye' to find a type of spying, especially viewing private activities.

Answer: Voyeurism

V, our, is and M with 'ye' inserted creates voyeurism.

'V' was a television series which began in 1983, and which has had several follow up series since. 'Our' denotes ownership - our house, our car, our earth, for example, and is also the name of a river in Europe. Websites in Iceland end with .is, while M is the largest of the Roman numerals, or a character in the 'James Bond' films. Voyeurism usually relates to spying of a prurient, or lustful nature - watching people in acts of intimacy.
7. Take the three letter abbreviation of a term used to denote people of rank in the UK and elsewhere, a synonym for dine or feed, and a television show that starred George Clooney and Anthony Edwards. Insert 'ye' to discover a bird found in Australia and New Guinea.

Answer: Honeyeater

Hon, eat and ER, with 'ye' inserted gives you honeyeater.

Hon, in the context I have used it here, is short for Honourable, and is used as a title for the sons and daughters of minor nobles, such as barons. It's also used for Members of Parliament - as in 'my honourable friend'. I'll say no more about that usage, though. Eat refers to the intake of food, and 'ER' ran on television from 1994 until 2009. It featured many stars, apart from the two mentioned in the question. Honeyeaters include the wattle birds, the friar birds and many others such as the yellow-plumed honeyeater. They don't all eat only nectar, though. Fruit and insects are part of the diet of many of the species.
8. Take the word meaning a structure that provides shelter, or supports a roof, and a short name for Edward. Insert 'ye' to come up with a colloquial name to describe someone suffering from strabismus.

Answer: Walleyed

Wall, plus ed with 'ye' inserted creates walleyed.

A wall can be part of a building or a separate construction to mark a boundary. Ed is short for Edward, or Edwin - Ed (Edward) Miliband became leader of Britain's Labour Party in 2010.

Strabismus refers to a condition affecting the eyes, where they are uncoordinated and cannot focus on the same spot.
9. Take a synonym for wager, the chemical symbol for radium and the abbreviation for the pre-decimal British penny. Insert 'ye' to find a synonym for deceived or defrauded.

Answer: Betrayed

Bet plus ra and d, with 'ye' inserted creates betrayed.

To bet on something is to place a wager of money on the likelihood of a particular outcome, such as which horse will win a race or even what name will be chosen for a Royal baby. Bet can also be a letter of the alphabet in languages such as Hebrew or a short name for Elizabeth. Radium, discovered by the Curies, has the symbol Ra and the 'old' English penny was the 'd' of L.s.d. It came from the Latin name of denarii.

If you are betrayed, someone has broken your trust. Betrayal can be personal - revealing a secret you have been told in confidence - or political, such as treason - supporting another country against the interests of your own.
10. Take a type of metal container, the symbol for the SI unit of force and the internal licence plate identifying Spain. Insert 'ye' to find the capital of a South American region which is part of France.

Answer: Cayenne

Can, with the letters N and E, with 'ye' inserted creates Cayenne.

A can, or tin, is a container primarily used for storing food and drinks. The process of canning dates from the early nineteenth century. The newton, named for Sir Isaac Newton, is identified by the letter N and E is used for Spain, from Espana. Cayenne is the capital of French Guiana, and is named for the river on which it stands. The name of the cayenne pepper also comes from the city.
