Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Scrabble, there are about 950 three-letter words, of which about 500 would be in everyday use. Most of the answers in my quiz will be common words, too. Start with these threes- 'Feline part of a play'.

Answer: cat act

Some of the more obscure words are 'ahi', a Hawaiian fish, 'lou', a Scottish word meaning 'love', 'sif', South African English for 'disgusting'.
2. Despite FunTrivia being a quiz site, the highest scoring 4-letter word is NOT 'quiz' (for 22 points). It is, in fact, the little-known 'jazy', a worsted wig, which scores 23 points. I think my 4-letter question calls for a four-word answer. 'Chooses mail vessels end'.

Answer: opts post pots stop

My apologies to Dr Seuss for paraphrasing some of his tongue-twisters! 'Spot tops' missed out on my silly sentence.
3. Five letters this time, and an amusing mental picture- 'A fish teacher'.

Answer: trout tutor

The first person that mentions anything about schools of fish will be slapped with a haddock!

These are the only two words that can be made with those letters.
4. The six-letter question is also a silly image, but usually the sillier the image, the easier the words are to remember. 'Rudolph's headwear for hire'.

Answer: antler rental

'Learnt' is another common anagram, along with the obscure 'ternal', meaning 'triple', and 'altern', meaning 'alternate'.

Many players use mental imagery to remember words, and it could be a personal thing- names of friends/family can even be helpful. An example could be for the letters that go in front of 'aa'- a word for lava in Hawaii- (B,C,M,F), could become "Bill, Clive, Mick and Fred all go to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)".
5. These two words use one of the best-known 6-letter stems to create two 7-letter bingos. 'Most circumspect servers'.

Answer: wariest waiters

Also 'waister', a novice sailor and 'wastrie', alternative spelling of 'wastery', meaning 'reckless extravagance'. The 'SATIRE' stem is important as the letters combine with most other letters to form the important 50-point bonus words.
6. The average adult vocabulary is somewhere between 10,000 and 25,000, depending on education and a myriad of other factors. There are over 270,000 valid words in the Scrabble list. Feeling daunted yet? These two eight-letter words should be in most everyone's knowledge- 'More meagre container'.

Answer: scantier canister

William Shakespeare's word knowledge was extraordinary for his time- his vocabulary is estimated at over 20,000, when the average Elizabethan used less than 1,000 words.
7. International Scrabble uses both British English and American English as well as many other varieties. 'Color' and 'colour' are both acceptable, as are 'grey' and 'gray'. Each answer has nine letters and the first word in this question uses the British spelling-'Authenticates Spanish women'.

Answer: notarises senoritas

Eventually, the entire Scrabble world will speak the same language, but it will take an awfully long time. The American players are equally divided about whether to stay with their tradition word-list, or to join the rest of the world.
8. Statistically, the three most common 7-letter words are 'otarine', relating to an eared seal, 'etaerio', a many-seeded fruit and 'arenite', a sedimentary rock. Your 10-letter challenge is- 'Family lineages opposition'.

Answer: ancestries resistance

The three most common eights are 'aeration', exposure to air, 'anoestri', a period of sexual inactivity, and 'arointed', an archaic term meaning 'to scare away'.
9. This pair of eleven-letter words actually contains a Z. Be careful with your spelling. 'Treats (like milk), the upper back muscles.'

Answer: pasteurizes trapeziuses

'Pasteurizes' is an example of a proper noun becoming a common noun. Some others that have gone through the same change are 'xerox', 'hoover', all chemical elements that are named after people or places (californium, curium, etc), and various eponymic measurements (joule, newton, henry, watt, etc.).
10. Twelve-letter words are very uncommon on a Scrabble board, but the first word in this answer is not beyond the realms of possibility. The spelling is British English. Solve this one, if you can- 'Government-owned salt removal'.

Answer: nationalised desalination

'Nation' is a fairly common word, and 'alised' are all common letters, so it would be a fairly makeable play.
