Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Each answer consists of two eight-letter words that are anagrams of each other. I will give you the starting letters of both words in the Hint fields. Let's try with 'Changing a plane figure'.

Answer: altering triangle

There are several other anagrams, including 'relating', 'alerting' and 'integral'.
2. Eight-letter words are important to know in the game of Scrabble. They allow you to lay all your times through a tile that is already on the board. Your next challenge- 'Little old ladies' salaries'.

Answer: Grannies earnings

Some amazing scores are possible by playing a word that hits two Triple Word Score spaces. Laying down CAZIQUES (North American Indian chiefs), around an A already on the board could score up to 392 points!
3. There are over 38,000 eight-letter words allowable in Scrabble, but this quiz will not use unusual words like ZYZZYVAS (weevils) or CAJEPUTS (oils from the melaleuca tree). Both of these are legal words, but would be extremely unlikely to crop up on your rack! Next up is- 'Cooking a musician'.

Answer: roasting organist

There are no other possible words with these letters.
4. To work out possible bingos, shuffle plausible prefixes or suffixes around on your rack. Look for combinations such as 'pre-', 'un-', 'dis-', '-ed', '-er', '-ion'. This puzzle uses two common suffixes- 'Quickest non-believers'.

Answer: hastiest atheists

'-est' and '-ist' are both worth looking out for.

The Old English word 'staithes', meaning 'landing docks' is the only other answer.
5. '-ing' suffixes are also handy for extending words to 7 or 8 letters. This question uses that suffix. 'Walking up a slope'.

Answer: treading gradient

'-ing+s' suffixes can be fraught with danger, as some words work, whilst others do not. For example, 'bowlings' is OK, but 'chokings' is not.
6. This one is tougher, but look out for prefixes and suffixes. 'The central part of imagining'.

Answer: midrange dreaming

'Margined' is the only other option.
7. The letter 'Y' is not usually easy to fit into an 8-letter word, but I have squeezed one into these two words. 'Lone supporter of the Queen'.

Answer: solitary royalist

Other difficult letters would include 'J' and 'Z'. Because these are high value tiles in their own right, they would usually be better being played off individually. A judiciously placed 'X' can score more than 50 points.
8. Compound words are common in Scrabble, especially the longer words. 'Wheelbarrow', 'newspaper', 'railway', etc, are all valid. One of these answers is a compound. 'How do you get into a brothel?'

Answer: bordello doorbell

I have see 'govern' turned into 'governmental', and thence into 'nongovernmental', for a 15-letter word- it looked quite spectacular!
9. English is a very dynamic language, borrowing words from virtually every other language on the planet, even 'dead' languages. This one uses New Latin- 'Removal of water from attractive scented flower'

Answer: gardenia drainage

'Tobacco' from American Indian, 'alcohol' and 'massage' from Arabic, 'typhoon' from Chinese, 'fiancee' and 'canteen' from French, 'guru' and 'yoga' from Indian, even 'mogul' from Mongol- the list goes on and on.
10. Most countries have Scrabble clubs where you can take on an expert player in a social environment. Your playing ability will increase by leaps and bounds, and you will be able to solve quizzes like this one in a matter of seconds. (Perhaps!) 'Desecrated a woodwork joint'.

Answer: violated dovetail

Just Google 'Scrabble clubs' in your city or country.
