Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This friendly crossbreed is INTO KNEES.

Answer: Tonkinese

INTO KNEES = TONKINESE

Cats spend many hours curled up and snoozing in a pleasant warm spot - which could be in front of a roaring fire but is often on their human's lap.

Tonkinese cats are beautiful creatures with predominantly pale fur, with darker faces and paws. They are a cross between Siamese and Burmese cats and have probably been around since the 19th century.
2. "What colour is that cat?" Reply: "I'm UNSURE, BASIL"

Answer: Russian blue

UNSURE(,) BASIL = RUSSIAN BLUE

The Russian blue originates from the area of western Russia around the port city of Arkhangelsk (also known in English as Archangel) and these cats are also known as the Archangel cat or Archangel blue. Despite their name they do not have blue fur, but actually occur in varying shades of grey with a shimmering or glossy appearance.
3. A former seller of this cat breed might be described as an EX VENDOR.

Answer: Devon Rex

EX VENDOR = DEVON REX

The Devon Rex originates from the English county of Devon and, like the Cornish Rex from neighbouring Cornwall, has notably soft and curly fur. They are also have large ears and are highly agile - in particular they like occupying spots that are high off the ground, such as the tops of cupboards or wardrobes.
4. A saucer of milk is not actually the best drink to put out for your pet cat - but then again, neither is BEE'S RUM.

Answer: Burmese

BEE(')S RUM = BURMESE

Burmese cats originate from the region of south-east Asia around the border between Thailand and Burma (Myanmar). Originally, the natural fur colour of a Burmese cat was dark brown, but many years of breeding have produced Burmese cats with a wide variety of other colours of fur. The eye colour of a Burmese cat also depends on the colour of its coat - some will have green eyes and others gold ones.
5. Would this large cat MOO at a CANINE?

Answer: Maine Coon

MOO (at a) CANINE = MAINE COON

Maine Coons are particularly large cats but they are no where near the size of a cow so not very likely to start mooing...however, they can be very vocal and are likely to screech and howl as well as miaow loudly. They are also highly intelligent and seem to enjoy interacting with humans in a way that is more canine than feline.

The breed originates from the US state of Maine and is a naturally found breed rather than one developed by humans.
6. Cautious owners of this Scandinavian cat might think OF COGENT WARRANTIES against its loss.

Answer: Norwegian Forest cat

OF COGENT WARRANTIES = NORWEGIAN FOREST CAT

The Norwegian Forest cat is similar in size to a Maine Coon cat and has long, thick, dense fur that make it well-suited to the temperatures experienced during a Scandinavian winter and are particularly popular as pets in that region. The breed was not registered internationally until 1970, but it is believed to have developed over the last thousand years from cats brought to Norway by the Vikings.
7. This ultra-relaxed breed of cat may lie around your house like a LARD LOG.

Answer: Ragdoll

LARD LOG = RAGDOLL

Ragdoll cats make great pets as they are laid-back, placid and gentle creatures that also tend to be surprisingly loyal for a cat. They can often be seen following their owners around the house and are generally comfortable with being picked up and cuddled. Their name comes from their tendency to lie limp in someone's arms - just like a child's rag doll toy.
8. This cat has a NUMERICAL ARC to its ears.

Answer: American curl

NUMERICAL ARC = AMERICAN CURL

The American curl is a breed of cat noted for the shape of its ears, which tend to curl away from its face. The breed first appeared in California and can be dated back to the early 1980s when it is likely a spontaneous genetic mutation occurred that created its distinctive appearance. An American curl's ears need to be handled very gently to avoid injury.
9. This little creature will NAB a LEG to greet you.

Answer: Bengal

NAB (a) LEG = BENGAL

Both cat lovers and cat haters are well aware that friendly felines like to greet humans by rubbing themselves against a human's lower legs. It isn't entirely a friendly gesture though - the cat is likely to actually be marking their territory by assuring that their scent is all over you!

Bengal cats are hybrids developed from wild Asian leopard cats and the Egyptian mau breed (with some other domestic cat genes mixed in as well). They have distinctive leopard-like markings and the appearance of their wild ancestors.
10. Hiding in mountain bushes may GAIN IT BERRIES but won't help this big cat find a preferable dinner.

Answer: Siberian tiger

GAIN IT BERRIES = SIBERIAN TIGER

The Siberian tiger is one of the largest big cats in the world and definitely not the type of feline that you should look to keep as a pet. It is one of several subspecies of Panthera tigris tigris and found in the far east of Russia and northern China. Their preferred diet generally consists of various species of deer, moose and wild boar as well as smaller species such as rabbits. They have even been known to catch and eat bears!
