Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1938 Susan Vance (Katharine Hepburn) a scatterbrain with a pet leopard falls for palaeontologist David Huxley (Cary Grant).

Answer: Bringing up Baby

"Bringing up Baby" is a screwball comedy written specifically for Katharine Hepburn. The movie was a commercial flop initially but made a small profit eventually. Filmsite.org, a movie review site stated in 2010, "It is also one of the funniest, wackiest and most inspired films of all time with its characteristic breathless pace, zany antics and pratfalls, absurd situations and misunderstandings, perfect sense of comic timing, completely screwball cast, series of lunatic and hare-brained misadventures, disasters, light-hearted surprises and romantic comedy".

It is often considered the definitive screwball comedy. The leopard (called Baby) woven into the plot adds to the nuttiness of the film.
2. 1987. Peter Mitchell's (Tom Selleck) life is thrown into chaos when a baby 'package' is left at his apartment.

Answer: Three Men and a Baby

Leonard Nimoy directed this classic 1987 comedy which starred Ted Danson, Tom Selleck and Steve Guttenberg. Three bachelors are tasked to mind a package but when a baby, sired by one of the men, is left outside their door, they assume the baby is the 'package'. Mayhem ensues as they struggle to care for a baby they knew nothing about.

Produced at Walt Disney Studios, it was their first movie to gross over $100 million domestically in its first run. The movie was also the highest grossing fim of 1087. A sequel "Three Men and a Little Lady" was filmed in 1990.
3. 1968. A young mother-to-be (Mia Farrow) suspects an evil cult wants to take her baby.

Answer: Rosemary's Baby

A genuine slow-burning horror story that is now considered a classic. Guy and Rosemary Woodhouse move into a apartment with a past history of murder and witchcraft. Rosemary becomes pregnant but does not remember the event due to feeling ill after neighbour's gave her laced food.

It becomes apparent that the baby is the son of Satan. Roman Polanski was the director. Ruth Gordon (the evil neighbour) won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. "Rosemary's Baby" was judged to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and was chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry.
4. 2007. Two private investigators (Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan) hunt for a missing child in Boston.

Answer: Gone Baby Gone

Based on a novel by Denis Lehane, "Gone Baby Gone" is a film-noir thriller in a modern setting. It is Ben Affleck's directorial debut. He did not have an acting role but his brother Casey was one of the leads. The Two detectives find the missing child but there are twists and turns along the way.

The film follows the plot of the book closely and was a moderate hit, earning $35 million against its $19 million budget. Amy Ryan (Oscar nominated for Best Supporting Actress), Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris rounded out an all star cast.
5. 2004. Margaret 'Maggie' Fitzgerald (Hillary Swank) convinces hard-nosed Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) to train her as a boxer.

Answer: Million Dollar Baby

Cantankerous trainer Dunn relents and teaches Fitzgerald the basics of boxing. She turns out to be a natural and the two strike up a pseudo-father/daughter relationship. When Maggie is grievously injured during a bout, Frankie assists Maggie by fulfilling her final wish.
Directed by, and starring Clint Eastwood, "Million Dollar Baby" was critically acclaimed and popular with movie-goers, despite some activists protesting the ending. At the Academy Awards the movie won several Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
6. 1999. In this comedy, two scientists (Kathleen Turner, Christopher Lloyd) use babies to decipher a powerful language and insight from the earliest years of life.

Answer: Baby Geniuses

The two scientists, Drs Kinder (Turner) and Heep (Lloyd) are using babies from orphanages to attempt to learn and then exploit the powerful insights they believe babies possess. This insight is lost when the babies learn to talk in adult language. One baby, Sylvester, discovers this plan and eventually thwarts it after escaping and meeting his identical twin, Whit, in a playground. Whit is then 'recaptured'.

In many twists, Dr Kinder is arrested, Dr Heep takes over the facility and a friendly adult, Dan (Peter MacNicol) and Dr Kinder's niece and Whit's mother, Robin (Kim Cattrall) adopt Sylvester.
7. 1994. An intrepid baby, nicknamed 'Baby Bink' escapes his inept kidnappers and leads them around Chicago following the plot of his favourite book.

Answer: Baby's Day Out

Directed by Patrick Read Johnson, three inept kidnappers abduct a wealthy baby, played by Adam and Jacob Worton, and hold him to ransom. The baby escapes by following a bird outside the window and he then manages to find all the places in his favourite book, leading his kidnapper and the police in an adventure around the city. All ends happily with the clever baby pointing out the apartment where the kidnappers had kept him, and ensuring their arrest. "Baby's Day Out" was widely panned by the critics when released, and it failed spectacularly at the Box Office.

It was, however, a big hit in India
8. 1990. A romantic musical comedy set in 1950s Baltimore. The outcast 'Drapes', including Wade Walker (Johnny Depp) interact with the traditional 'Squares'.

Answer: Cry-Baby

Written and Directed by John Waters, this movie tells the classic tale of two people 'Cry-Baby' Wade Walker (Depp) and Allison Vernon-Williams (Amy Locane) from opposing groups who meet and fall in love, despite the differences in background (e.g. "Romeo and Juliet" and "West Side Story").

Their love transcended these differences and led to a new alliance between the groups. The film has a large cast and includes Willem Dafoe, Patricia Hearst, Iggy Pop and Ricky Lake. "Cry-Baby" was Waters' second musical after the success of "Hairspray".
9. 2016. A women in her forties (Renee Zellweger) is now pregnant but is unsure if Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) or Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey) is the father.

Answer: Bridget Jones' Baby

Third in the "Bridget Jones Diary" series, this movie closes off the series. The movie answers the question of who she will marry and who indeed is the father of her son, William. The movie was a commercial success, raking in over $210 million. After a six year screen absence, Ms Zellweger was criticised for her appearance and several reporters stated she must have had plastic surgery.

This caused a strong reaction from Ms Zellweger and unfortunately detracted from the movie.
10. 1962. Two sisters, previously actresses, played by Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, take sibling rivalry to a whole new level.

Answer: What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Baby Jane" Hudson (Bette Davis) was a vaudeville child actress and her sister Blanche, (Joan Crawford) is jealous. Years later their fortunes have reversed when Blanche is a successful actress and Jane lives in her shadow. When Blanche is paralysed in a car accident, the sisters live together in an old mansion purchased with Blanche's money. After years of bitter feuding and hatred, and Jane trying to kill Blanche and steal her money, it is revealed that the catalyst for their hatred could have been avoided.

Director Robert Aldrich was relying on the rivalry between actresses Joan Crawford and Bette Davis to lend realism to this psychological thriller, and it paid off handsomely. The movie was a Box Office hit and earned a handful of Oscar nominations, eventually winning the gong for "Best Costume Design- Black and White".

This movie only fueled the bitter rivalry between the two stars. The backstage battle during the film production was the basis for "Feud: Bette and Joan" the 2017 first season of the television series "Feud". Jessica Lange starred as Crawford and Susan Sarandon as Davis.
