Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jaina Proudmoore
Answer: Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos
Jaina Proudmoore first appeared in 'Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos', a real-time strategy game published by Blizzard in 2002. She was an extraordinarily powerful sorceress with a particular command for ice magic. Until she took a more zealous turn in 'World of Warcraft', she could have been described as bookish, kind and diplomatic.
2. Melisandre
Answer: A Clash of Kings
The glamorous Melisandre of Asshai comes from the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series originally written by George R. R. Martin. She first appeared in 'A Clash of Kings', published in 1998. Her specialty powers are those of fire, shadow and of precognition: she would deem that all visions revealed in the flames were accurate and that it was human error in interpretation that sometimes got in the way.
3. Rinoa Heartilly
Answer: Final Fantasy VIII
'Final Fantasy VIII' was a role-playing game published in 1999 by Square for the PSX. The plot revolved around a number of sorceresses, who were hinted in the game to have existed for many eons in a sense of permanent tension. Rinoa was the sassy love interest of the protagonist, Squall, and struggled to acclimate to the powers she inherited during the course of the game.
4. White Witch
Answer: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Jadis, the White Witch, was ice-cold and manipulative in her desire to conquer the land of Narnia for herself. In C.S. Lewis' 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', she famously tricked Edmund into betraying his friends - a Judas allegory - in exchange for some Turkish Delight.
She also strongly featured in 'The Magician's Nephew', the sixth-written in 'The Chronicles of Narnia' which was a prequel to the series.
5. Minerva McGonagall
Answer: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
You would really have your pick of witches in J.K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', considering it was full of them. Minerva McGonagall was an animagus - could turn into a cat - who was the head of Gryffindor house, Professor of Transfiguration and (originally) the deputy headmistress. She was strict when necessary, but had a kind heart.
6. Dreama
Answer: Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Dreama was a witch who appeared in the 'Dream a Little Dreama Me' episode in the 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' sitcom. She owned a witch familiar called Juliette Jingleheimer. Dreama was known for being clumsy and inexperienced with her magic, though still a good friend to Sabrina. She was the only character in the series not to have been given a surname.
7. Samantha Stephens
Answer: Bewitched
Samantha Stephens appeared in the first episode of 'Bewitched, airing in 1964: 'I, Darrin, Take This Witch, Samantha'. Her mortal husband-to-be, Darrin, found out she was a witch during the episode. Whilst hesitant, he still married her provided she would fit in like anyone else.
This provides constant tension throughout the series: no matter how hard she tries, she can't truly hide her powers. Her signature nose twitch indicated that she was about to cast a spell.
8. Morrigan
Answer: Dragon Age: Origins
'Dragon Age: Origins' was a role-playing fantasy game released by BioWare in 2009. Morrigan was one of the playable characters, menacingly voiced by Claudia Black, and accompanied the Warden - the player character - throughout the game. She was pretty antisocial in character, throwing misanthropy, shade and snark all over the place.
In spite of that, the player can build enough of a relationship with her that they can physically romance her... if they have the know-how.
9. Madam Mim
Answer: The Sword in the Stone
Madam Mim prominently appeared as an adversary in 1963's animated feature, 'The Sword in the Stone'. It was based on the novel of the same name written by T.H. White and published in 1938. Where Merlin was a good wizard, Madam Mim was tricky and devious. In spite of trying to cheat the process, she lost a wizard's duel against him later in the film.
10. Mildred Hubble
Answer: The Worst Witch
'The Worst Witch' was the first in the children's series written and illustrated by Jill Murphy. Mildred Hubble was a hapless student at Cackle's Academy who was endearingly erratic and error-prone. Where everyone else had a black cat, the only cat left for her was a tabby.
She had a long-running rivalry with Ethel Hallow, and eventually triumphs as by the end of the series she has become the Head Girl of the school.

More cats! For this task, players had to find a feline main character in a type of entertainment (book, TV, movie or song, depending on what they wrote for last) and then use that name in a quiz title, to write about anything BUT that character.
