Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the Baldwins was the voice of Superman in the 2007 video animation film "Superman: Doomsday"?

Answer: Adam

Whilst many may claim that Adam's physique is his best asset and was particularly well suited for his award winning role as the mercenary Jayne Cobb in the television series "Firefly" (2002) it has been his voice that has won him more plaudits. Initially cast as the voice of York in "Static Shock" (2000) and Finn in the "Jackie Chan Adventures" (2000) he proved the perfect tone for Clark Kent/Superman in this straight-to-video adaptation. He has been in demand for numerous television voice roles including Vance Astro in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" series as well as being a strong contributor to video games by lending his voice to the "Halo" and "Mass Effect" range of games.

You may have noted that the question did not specify the Baldwins as brothers. Adam is unrelated to the other three named.

2. Which of the following characters did Don Adams *NOT* provide his voice for?

Answer: Atom Ant

"Atom Ant" was a Hanna-Barbera creation who shared the small screen with Secret Squirrel. He was mainly voiced by Don Messick, Howard Morris and Jenny Waldo during his run on television.
Don Adams is probably best known for his work as the bumbling spy Maxwell Smart on television's "Get Smart" which debuted in 1965. He was soon typecast in this role and as a result his film and television work failed to reach any great heights. He found greater success (and claimed he made more money) delivering the classic lines "Tennessee Tuxedo will not fail" and "Wowsers" (as Inspector Gadget). "Gadget Boy" was a spin-off from the "Inspector Gadget" series in which the main character is similar to the Inspector, only smaller. Adams also voiced himself in an episode of "The New Scooby-Doo Movies" called "The Exterminator" (1973).

3. Probably best known as Thurston Howell III on the television series "Gilligan's Island" Jim Backus was also the famous voice behind which of the following vision impaired characters?

Answer: Mr Magoo

As mentioned Jim gained a measure of fame as "the millionaire" on the island but he was also cast as James Dean's father in "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955), however, his voicing of the near-sighted and extremely fortunate Quincy Magoo has bought an equal measure of success. Backus provided Magoo with his vocals from his first appearance, in 1949, until he succumbed to pneumonia in 1989. Jim also provided the voice of God in the 1971 rock opera "Truth of Truths" and, for a period in the 1970s, was the spokesperson for La-z-Boy and the voice of "Cap'n Crunch" in television advertisements.
4. Which one of the following actors (who starred in the film) claimed to have been one of the voices of God in the 1956 film "The Ten Commandments"?

Answer: Charlton Heston

We use the word "claims" above as the actual voice of God (VOG) in the film is one that is shrouded in both mystery and controversy. A number of people have put their hands up to claim that the voice is theirs, however, the voices used were so heavily modified and overlaid with a range of special effects that it is now too difficult to exact an identification. Certainly, of the above, Heston is the only one that has made the claim. Cecil B. DeMille, the director of the film, was its narrator and indicated that he was the VOG but, along with Heston, Delos Jewkes (as part of the burning bush scene) has also come forward. Donald Hayne, who was DeMille's biographer, offered that he (Hayne) was the VOG during the handing down of the Ten Commandments and that Heston was the voice during the burning bush scene. Who do you believe? This is likely to be one of those cases and only God will know. Heston had a strong on-screen persona, however, directors also valued his voice which has been used many times in movies, television and video games.

The most notable of these include the voice of the title character in "Ben Hur" (2003) and the narrator in the films "Armageddon" (1998) and "Hercules" (1997).
5. UK actor Michael Angelis replaced Ringo Starr as the narrator of which iconic animated character's television series?

Answer: Thomas the Tank Engine

Based on the books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry, the anthropomorphised Thomas the Tank Engine became a worldwide hit on television. Starr set the tone as the narrator in the first two seasons, however it's the lesser known Angelis who maintained that chair in the UK for the longest period, serving the programme from 1991 through to 2012. Unlike Ringo he did not take on board any of the character voices whilst working on television. He did, however, voice both Percy and James in the 2000 movie "Thomas and the Magic Railroad" and provided all the voices for the video games "Thomas & Friends: The Great Festival Adventure" (1999), "Thomas & Friends: Trouble on the Tracks" (2000) and "Thomas & Friends: Building the New Line" (2002). Beyond this series Michael's career is more notable as an actor though he did do the narration of John Peel's autobiography, "Margrave of the Marshes", which was heard on BBC Radio 4 in 2005.

6. John Wayne, at one time, lent his voice to the cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn.

Answer: False

Foghorn J. Leghorn comes from the creators of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies animations. He made his first appearance in "Walky, Talky Hawky" in 1946 and was voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc. Blanc was the only voice for the overbearing rooster during John Wayne's lifetime and he continued to voice the character until he passed away in 1989.
Despite having a very distinctive and highly imitated voice John Wayne virtually has no credits as a voice actor. The only recognition comes in "Miracle in Motion", a 1952 short film that he narrated.
7. Which Canadian songster, who played the Balladeer in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", was the voice behind "Jock the Hero Dog" in 2011?

Answer: Bryan Adams

More often than not you'd expect to see Adams' name appear as part of the movie's soundtrack than as either an actor or an on-screen voice. The best example of his soundtrack work would undoubtedly be his contribution of "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" for the above-named "Robin Hood" (1991) film. Adams' resume as a voice actor is not huge but it is a work in progress. Apart from "Jock the Hero Dog" he has also been the voice behind Hoodwink in "The Real Story of the Three Little Kittens" (1990) and Beaver Foreman in "Legends of Oz: Dorothy Returns" (2013).
8. Eric Goldberg stepped up to the mike for Joe Dante's 2003 live action animation "Looney Tunes: Back in Action". Which of the following was *NOT* one of his voice roles in the film?

Answer: Fat Albert

Pennsylvania born Goldberg has had a long association with the Disney Animation Studios beginning with his work on the 1992 animation "Aladdin". Though he made his reputation as an animator he has been the prominent voice actor in a number of feature films, most notably "The Princess and the Frog" (2009) and "Winnie the Pooh" (2011), as well as providing the vocals for the A.I.M. soldiers in the video game "Iron Man II". Goldberg provided the animation for the 2004 film "Fat Albert" but not the voices. The character Fat Albert is a creation of Bill Cosby and is not part of the Looney Tunes stable of characters.

9. Considered to be one of the all time best voice actors, who is the man who started his career as Spike the Dragon in "My Little Pony" (1986) to become Star Scream in Michael Bay's "Transformers" series of films?

Answer: Charlie Adler

Whilst "My Little Pony" kick-started it, Adler's voice career was boosted when he scored the voice role of Nat Smurfling in the fourth season of "The Smurfs". Since then his skills have earned him a daytime Emmy Award for his work on "Rugrats" in 2003 as well as nominations for the BTVA (Behind the Voice Actors Awards) for his efforts in the television series "Marvel's Avengers Assemble" (2013), "G.I. Joe Renegades" (2010), the film "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" (2011) and the video game "Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds" (2011).
10. Many know Casey Kasem as the co-founder and host in productions of the American Top 40 franchises but Casey was also the regular voice of which of these fictional mystery solvers?

Answer: "Shaggy" Rogers

Norville "Shaggy" Rogers is a character from the "Scooby-Doo" franchise and was voiced by Casey from the show's inception (1969) for 28 years until 1997. He would return to the role for periods between 2002 until his personal retirement in 2009. Casey initially tried his hand at acting but soon realised that his voice was his greatest asset. After his first performances as Shaggy he was able to score the voice role of Groove, the drummer in the "Cattanooga Cats" (1969) which then led to a regular gig as the voice of Robin in a number of the "Super Friends" franchises from 1973 to 1985. He was also Alexander Cabot III in "Josie & the Pussycats" (1970), numerous characters on "Sesame Street", Mark in "Battle of the Planets" (1978) and a number of characters in the "Transformers" franchise.
