Ncouti Gatwa was born on October 15, 1992 in Nyatugenge, the down town section of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. His father, Tharcisse, was a journalist in Rwanda.

The Gatwa family fled Rwanda during the genocide of 1994. Over the course of 100 days in the spring of 1994, the Hutu government of Rwanda murdered between 500 and 800 thousand Tutsi citizens. Given the short time frame, it was a killing machine that exceeded the efficiency of Nazi Germany or the Khmer Rouge. Especially disturbing because much of the killing was done with machetes. It was one of the more significant war crimes in a century filled with them.

Ncuti is actually his middle name. His given first name is Mizero, which means "hope" in Bantu.

In 2020, Gatwa received six awards for his work in "Sex Education". The first was on March 13, when the Broadcasting Press Guild gave him the "Best Breakthrough" award.
