Before becoming an actor, Will Sampson performed as a competitor on the rodeo circuit. In fact, Mr. Sampson was competing in a rodeo when he was approached by scouts who offered him the role in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

As for "The Outlaw Josey Wales," Mr. Sampson plays the part of Ten Bears, the chief of a tribe of Comanches with whom Josey (Clint Eastwood) bargains and makes peace. In the process Ten Bears and Josey become blood brothers.
