Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This first actor was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was married to the lovely Esther Williams from 1969 until his death in 1982. His birth date was January 9, 1915.

Answer: Fernando Lamas

He made his acting debut in Spanish films in 1942 with "En el Ultimo Piso". He started in American films in 1951. His son Lorenzo Lamas, following in the footsteps of his father, is also an actor. Lama is known for his roles in films such as "Renegade", "Snake Eater" and "The Swordsman". Fernando passed away on October 8, 1982 of cancer.
2. This legendary singer was born Eleanora Fagan on April 7th, 1915. She was known best for her soulful, unique singing voice.

Answer: Billie Holiday

IMDB.com lists Billie's birth name as Elinore Harris, but for the question I used Billie's official site, which lists her birth name as Eleanora Fagan. Billie had a very sad, short life. She died in 1959 at the age of 44 from the effects of heroin addiction.
3. This actor died on November 14, 2002 of complications from surgery. He made his film debut in 1940 in the musical "Too Many Girls" as Jojo Jordan. His birth date was February 7, 1915.

Answer: Eddie Bracken

This one was a little harder to get, I know. The movie was cute, and it was also the film in which Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz met for the first time. Eddie Bracken, Desi Arnaz, and Libby Bennet all made their film debuts with this movie. But more about Eddie: he was married for 63 years to Connie Nickerson, and with her he had five children--two boys and three girls. Good for him; it's nice to see that a celebrity CAN stay married to the same spouse for more than five years.
4. This next man was a world-famous wrestler who brought wrestling to network TV. He was born on March 23, 1915.

Answer: Gorgeous George

Born George Wagner, he wasn't necessarily big or tall, but it was the way he entered the stage that made him popular. It was this pomp and circumstance that has been used by the likes of Randy Savage and Mohammed Ali.
5. OK all you "M*A*S*H" fans, this one is for you. Which actor, born on April 10, 1915, played Colonel Sherman T. Potter?

Answer: Harry Morgan

Harry Morgan started his career in a film called To the Shores of Tripoli in 1942. In 1946 he played Klaus Bleeker in one of my favorite movies, "Dragonwyck". He was in a few TV series besides "M*A*S*H", including "Dragnet", "The D.A." and "3rd Rock from the Sun".
6. This actor, born to an Irish father and Mexican mother, was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on April 21, 1915.

Answer: Anthony Quinn

Anthony had a long career spanning 60 years in showbiz. He was married three times and fathered 13 children. Wow. He passed away on June 3, 2001 from pneumonia and respiratory complications.
7. This lady first started out as a singer, but then graduated to films. Her first film was entitled "Scandals" in 1934. She was born on May 5, 1915.

Answer: Alice Faye

Alice Jeanne Leppert was born in New York City on May 5. Betty Grable, Judy Garland and Doris Day were her closest competitors (which is why they were the other choices), but she introduced almost twice as many "Hit Parade" songs as they did. So in all reality, she was the most popular for a while.

In 1941, she married Phil Harris and they were married until his death in 1995. They had two daughters.
8. This man, in my opinion, really doesn't need an introduction. He ran the Mercury Theater in the 1930s and was the one that scared the entire country when he did an episode on his show entitled "War of the Worlds". His birth date was May 6, 1915.

Answer: Orson Welles

I have heard the broadcast and it was absolutely spectacular. But for some reason I still can't bring myself to believe that folks living back in 1938 thought this was serious. Oh, well, what can you do? Orson indeed had a sad career. He was once quoted that he "started from the top and worked his way down". Very apt to say the least. He died on October 10, 1985 of a heart attack.
9. This next lady was a longtime buddy of legendary comedienne Lucille Ball. In 1936, they were Goldwyn Girls and remained friends until the end. She made her movie debut with the film "Roman Scandals" in 1933. Her date of birth was May 31, 1915.

Answer: Barbara Pepper

I always thought that the cool thing about Lucy was that she used her friends on various episodes of her shows--or at least used their names. Marion Strong was a buddy of Lucy's back in Jamestown when she was growing up. The character of Carolyn Appleby was portrayed by Doris, and Mrs. Trumbull was played by Elizabeth. Barbara had many various roles on the show.
10. This lady had quite an acting career starting in 1934 with a film called "Search for Beauty". For many of her early films she was credited as Clara Lou, but later changed her first name. She was born on February 21, 1915.

Answer: Ann Sheridan

Ann Sheridan had a long-lasting acting career, spanning over 30 years. One of my favorite films of hers was "I Was A Male War Bride", starring her opposite Cary Grant. Ann died on January 21, 1967 from cancer of the esophagus and liver. She was one month shy of 52.
11. This actor, of "Bonanza" fame, was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on February 12, 1915.

Answer: Lorne Greene

Lorne participated in many other TV shows during his long career, including "Griff", "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Love Boat". He died in 1987 at the age of 72.
12. This actress is one of my personal favorites. She starred in 65 films, including "Casablanca", "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", and "Spellbound". Her date of birth was August 29, 1915.

Answer: Ingrid Bergman

Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Ingrid seemed to be in just the right movies. Even though the number of her films didn't even reach 100, she appeared in some of the most classic and unforgettable films. She was an absolutely incredible actress.
13. This man was the star of the 1950 film "D.O.A". After that film, he became one of the most interesting character actors of the '50s and '60s. He was born on September 10, 1915.

Answer: Edmond O'Brien

Edmond was also in the films "Birdman of Alcatraz" and "The Barefoot Contessa" for which he won an Academy Award. He passed away on May 9, 1985 from Alzheimer's disease.
14. This man wrote many plays as well as screenplays, including "Death of a Salesman", "The Misfits", and "The Crucible. This might help you out: his second wife was Marilyn Monroe.

Answer: Arthur Miller

Arthur was born Arthur Asher Miller in New York, NY on October 17, 1915. He began as a writer for the "Michigan Daily" at Michigan University. Other lesser known works of his include "An Enemy of the People" and "All My Sons".
15. OK. Here's the last one. He is one of the most legendary singers to ever live. Once a member of the Rat Pack, he had many nicknames, including Ol' Blue Eyes and The Chairman of the Board. His birth date was December 12, 1915.

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Yes, good Ol' Blue Eyes. Known as one of the most influential singers of the 20th century (next to Elvis), Sinatra WAS the Elvis of the '40s with all his bobbysoxer fans. His music still lives on today in his films and also on CDs. He is one that will never be forgotten.

He passed away on May 14, 1998--a day one of his biggest fans (a high school buddy of mine) dressed in all black and mourned for him all day.
