Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What shy or laid-back host of "Family Feud" was cast in the pilot episode of "Perfect Strangers"?

Answer: Louie Anderson

A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Louie Anderson was cast alongside Bronson Pinchot in the 1985 pilot episode of "Perfect Strangers". However, when the show was sold the role of Lou Appleton (Louie Anderson) was recast and Mark Linn-Baker played Larry Appleton on the show.

Anderson came onto "Family Feud" in 1999 after a four year break when ratings forced the show to shut down in 1995
2. "Family Feud" host John O'Hurley was voted the "Dancing With the Stars" winner in September of 2005.

Answer: True

When "Dancing With the Stars" premiered in 2005 its first winner was Kelly Monaco. However, because Monaco worked on an "ABC" soap opera and "Dancing With the Stars" aired on ABC, O'Hurley fans cried foul.

In an effort to stem the rising tide, "Dancing With the Stars" announced that there would be a special "grudge match". Kelly Monaco and her partner Alec Mazo, and John O'Hurley with his partner Charlotte Jorgensen would compete in a three dance dance-off. The dance-off occured September 20, 2005 with only viewers voting. The judges made comments but did not raise votes. Two nights later on September 22, 2005 John O'Hurley was declared the winner.
3. Which "Family Feud" host did voice-over work for an "Xbox 360" video game?

Answer: John O'Hurley

John O'Hurley began hosting "Family Feud" on September 11, 2006, and ended his run in 2010. The silver-maned O'Hurley is well-known for having a very dynamic voice. When the video game "Fable II" was done the owner of the Cow and Corset bar was voiced by John O'Hurley.
4. Which "Family Feud" host penned the book, "Straight Talk, No Chaser"?

Answer: Steve Harvey

Steve Harvey took over hosting duties on "Family Feud" in 2010 with the departure of John O'Hurley. Harvey was born in Welch, West Virginia, but later moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating high school Harvey went back to West Virginia, enrolled in and graduated from West Virginia University.

Harvey has had quite a few jobs, and being an author is just one. His book "Straight Talk, No Chaser" was published in 2010 and is just one of the books written by Steve Harvey, meant to enhance male/female relationships.
5. Which host of "Family Feud" married a member of one of the feuding families?

Answer: Richard Dawson

The Johnson family were contestants on an episode of the "Family Feud" that aired in 1981. One member of the family was 24 year old Gretchen Johnson who would, in 1991, become the second Mrs. Richard Dawson.
6. Which host of "Family Feud" not only did audience warm-ups for this show, but also appeared in the 1987 'And Then There Was One' episode of "The Golden Girls"?

Answer: Ray Combs

In 1982 Ray Combs packed up his family and left his furniture salesman job behind as they headed to Los Angeles, California for greener pastures. As a stand up comic he did what comics do; he made the rounds until he got a break. His break came in 1988 when he was offered a seven-year contract to host
"Family Feud". Ray Combs hosted Family Feud from 1988 to 1994.
7. Which "Family Feud" host got his big break while tooling around in traffic school?

Answer: Richard Karn

Nobody in showbiz got there without some kind of struggle. It's called paying your dues. Richard Karn also paid his dues. While waiting for his big break he managed an apartment complex. He and his wife also lived in the complex and did catering for Jewish events.

His big break came when he got a traffic citation and had to attend traffic school. It was there Karn met an agent who told him about a new television show that was casting. The show was "Home Improvement", which aired in September of 1991.

However, Karn initially didn't get the role of Al Borland. As luck would have it, when filming started the actor who was to play Al had other obligations, so the role went to Richard Karn.
8. We know John O'Hurley was one of the "Family Feud" hosts. He also played J. Peterman on "Seinfeld". However, is it true or false that he became an investor and co-owner of the J. Peterman Catalog/Company?

Answer: True

John O'Hurley's character on "Seinfeld," Jacopo Peterman was based on the real John Peterman of the J. Peterman Catalog/Company. In 2001 O'Hurley was approached with the opportunity to buy into the J. Peterman Company helping it out of bankruptcy.
9. Which host of "Family Feud" did a biting voice-over in the movie "Racing Stripes"?

10. Which of the "Family Feud" hosts did a Super Bowl commercial in 1980 for Michelob beer, but made improvements years later?

Answer: Richard Karn

Richard Karn was in New York less than a week with his drama degree when he got that Super Bowl plum. Even so, back in 1979 Super Bowl spots weren't nearly as lucrative as they are today, so I doubt Karn hit a jackpot.
11. Who broke a long time ritual of kissing female contestants when he came on as host of "Family Feud" in the 90s?

Answer: Richard Dawson

When Richard Dawson came back to host "Family Feud" in 1994 he no longer kissed each female family member as he had done during his first hosting run. Dawson was committed to keeping the promise he made to his wife and daughter to not kiss any female contestants.
12. Which "Family Feud" host not only fancies himself a singer but has one of the largest T-shirt collections in the world?

Answer: Richard Dawson

Early in the beginning of "Family Feud" while chatting with a contestant, Dawson mentioned that he collected and wore T-shirts. Collecting T-shirts was big back in the 70s, it still is somewhat. However, that mention opened up a flood of tees from so many families that came on the show. As a result Richard Dawson has a collection that is not only one of the most extensive but has some of the most rare tees in the world.

Richard Dawson not only sang on his first wife's (Diana Dors) show, he can also be heard on music from "Hogan's Heroes". Dawson also released a 45 rpm, on Carnation Records. On the record he sings, "His Children's Parade", as well as "Apples and Oranges".
13. Louie Anderson may not have known it but he was second choice to what country music singer, to host "Family Feud" in 1998?

Answer: Dolly Parton

"Family Feud" was bought by Pearson Television in 1997 and a year later they were considering Dolly Parton as its host. When Louie came into the mix they asked him to shoot a pilot episode; Anderson flat out refused. What he did was to make a home video with his family members doing "Family Feud". He presented that to the producers and it got him the hosting job.
14. Ray Combs died as the result of an automobile tragedy.

Answer: False

Ray Combs' life began to unravel before the end of his seven-year "Family Feud" run. During the May 27, 1994 final taping, a player in the 'Fast Money' round got zero points for each of the five answers he gave. The sad yet ridiculously funny situation prompted Combs to say, "You know, I've done this show for six years and this is the first time I had a person that actually got no points and I think it's a damn fine way to go out. Thought I was a loser until you walked up here. You made me look like a man."

At the end of that show Ray Combs walked off set, got into his car, and drove away. A few months later in July, Combs was in an auto accident where he injured his spinal disc. As if that wasn't bad enough two of his comedy clubs failed, and the home they left in Ohio went into foreclosure. The next year Combs and his wife separated. For the sake of their six children they tried to work it out, but sometimes it just doesn't work.

Ray Combs went into a clinical state and was institutionalized in Glendale, California in 1996. While on 72 hour watch at the psychiatric ward Combs hanged himself in a closet.
15. Which "Family Feud" host is the author of the best selling book, "Dear Dad: Letters from an Adult Child"?

Answer: Louie Anderson

Growing up with 10 brothers and sisters in Minnesota, Louie Anderson and his siblings had to contend with an alcoholic father. Anderson who could blame his stoutness on the alcoholism would focus his stand-up routines around his weight. However, after his father's death, as a coping mechanism he began keeping a diary of letters to his dad. One of the letters was published in "People" magazine in 1988 which led to the book and its publication in 1991.
