Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Lennon
Answer: Mark Chapman
One of the lead singers of the Beatles signed an autograph for Mark Chapman in December of 1980. Little did he know he was signing the autograph of his assassin. Later that night, Chapman shot Lennon. It turned out Lennon was correct is guessing that he would die in the evening (in the song "Yer Blues" on "The White Album") although he was incorrect in guessing that he'd also die in the morning. Chapman said that he did it because he wanted his fame. Well, Chapman did get some of Lennon's fame, but none of Lennon's love.
2. Selena Quintanilla
Answer: Yolanda Saldivar
Selena Quintanilla was a Mexican pop star, who sang pop songs in the Spanish language and the Latin American style. She was possibly the most popular musician in the world among the Latin American community. Of her many fans, her biggest fan was supposedly Yolanda Saldivar. Saldivar founded the Selena fan club.
When Selena learned about that, she made Saldivar the manager of her clothing line. However, Saldivar turned from Selena's biggest fan to Selena's worst enemy. Saldivar embezzled profits from the clothing line, and then was fired. Later, they met in a hotel room and Selena requested financial records that Saldivar had been witholding. Saldivar shot Selena, who died at age 23.
3. Andres Escobar
Answer: Humberto Munoz Castro
At the 1994 World Cup against the host team the United States, Andres Escobar scored an own goal against his own country, Colombia. Colombia lost the game 2-1. Shortly after the game, a gunman shot Escobar 6 times, saying "Gol!" after every shot, one for each time the Colombian broadcaster said it on TV. Humberto Munoz Castro confessed to being the killer, and said he did it because he worked as a driver for Santiago Gallon, who lost a lot of money by betting on the outcome of the game.
4. Rebecca Schaeffer
Answer: Robert John Bardo
Rebecca Schaeffer was a young, up-and-coming actress, famous for her role in the show "My Sister Sam" and the movie "Scenes From a Class Struggle in Beverly Hills." An obsessed stalker named Robert John Bardo got jealous when he saw her having sex with another man in the movie. So, Bardo paid $250 to a detective agency to find Schaeffer's home address.
Then, he showed up at her house and shot her.
5. Dimebag Darrell
Answer: Nathan Gale
Dimebag Darrell formed a successful heavy metal band Pantera in the 1990s. Then, he broke up Pantera and formed a new band called Damageplan. At a show in 2004, Pantera super-fan Nathan Gale, who had somehow gotten into the concert with a gun, also somehow got onstage and shot Dimebag until he killed him, blaming him for breaking up Pantera.
The Alrosa Villa must have had the worst security of any concert venue in the U.S.A. since 9/11/2001 (the date of an event that led to increased security at major business places like concert venues in the United States).
6. Christina Grimmie
Answer: Kevin James Loibl
After a concert in Orlando, Florida in 2016, 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie was shot by Kevin James Loibl. His best friend said that Loibl was madly in love with Grimmie and did things to make himself more physically attractive, such as lose weight and have surgery. The "Orlando Sentinel" said that he decided that if he couldn't have her, no one could have her.
7. Phil Hartman
Answer: Brynn Omdahl
Phil Hartman was an actor. One of his most famous roles is the role of Troy McClure on the Simpsons. McClure was an actor who appeared in many TV shows and movies in the Simpsons universe, always introducing himself by saying "Hi, I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such films as "..." and "..."" Hartman was among the most popular actors on the "Simpsons'" staff. McClure started off as a minor character, but they then did an episode called "A Fish Called Selma", in which McClure is the central character of the episode. Hartman even wanted to make a live-action movie about Troy McClure and many of the Simpsons staff were eager to help with it.
Although Brynn Omdahl wasn't known to be a fan of Hartman's work, one would think there was no bigger fan of Hartman as a person than his wife (which is why I use her in this quiz). At least, one would hope that was true at one point or why did she marry him? However, she was jealous of Hartman's success because she was an aspiring actress who couldn't find much success of her own. She was also jealous of Hartman's relationship with "Saturday Night Live" co-worker Jan Hooks. To make matters worse, and possibly because of her jealousy, she was heavily addicted to drugs and alcohol. In May of 1998, Hartman threatened to leave his wife if she didn't stop taking drugs. Late at night, an intoxicated Omdahl snuck into Hartman's bedroom and shot him and then shot herself.
8. Marvin Gaye
Answer: His or her father
In this case I use the term "fan" very loosely because Marvin Gay Sr. was clearly not a fan of much of what his son did. The father never approved of his son's music career. However, deep down in his heart every father is a huge fan of his son, no matter how much they disagree and fight.
Clearly, Gaye cared for his father enough to buy him a gun for Christmas so he could defend himself. That turned out to be a huge mistake. Gay Sr. and his wife got into a massive fight over a misplaced insurance policy letter. The younger Gaye tried to break up the fight. Because of that, Gay Sr. shot and killed his own son with his own son's Christmas present.
9. Dominique Dunne
Answer: John Sweeny
Dominique Dunne was an actress best known for her role in the 1981 movie "Poltergeist." Her real life was scarier than that movie (or any movie). She was in a relationship with an abusive man named John Sweeney. When she tried to end the relationship, he strangled her to death on her front porch. Sweeny confessed to the crimes but his conviction outraged Dunne's family when he was only given three and a half years in prison for manslaughter. Dunne's family thought it was murder.
10. Mikhail Lermontov
Answer: Nikolai Martynov
Lermontov was a Russian poet and painter. He constantly teased one of his biggest fans, Martynov, because of the way he dressed. Martynov challenged Lermontov to a duel. During this duel Lermontov fired a shot in the air. Martynov fired a shot right at the heart. Lermontov died at age 26.
