quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Actor Ed Harris starred as astronaut John Glenn in "The Right Stuff" (1983). In which other space-based movie did he also have a starring role?

Answer: Apollo 13 (1995)

Ed Harris has an extensive body of work to his credit. He has been nominated as Best Supporting Actor on several occasions, one of which was for his portrayal of NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz in "Apollo 13". Harris was also nominated for Best Actor in "Pollock" - the story of artist Jackson Pollock.

"Apollo 13" tells the story of NASA's third lunar mission, which almost ended in disaster. An on-board explosion caused loss of oxygen and power, with the mission being aborted. Saving the lives of the three astronauts required ingenuity and courage. Kranz' famous quote: "Failure is not an option."
2. "Right Now" is a track on the "Midnight Memories" album of which very successful British boy band?

Answer: One Direction

One Direction came third in the 2010 series of "The X Factor" in Britain, and "Midnight Memories" is their third album. Released November 2013, it debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200, making One Direction the first group in history to debut at number 1 in the US with their first three albums.

"Midnight Memories" became the fastest and biggest selling album of 2013 in both the US and UK.

All four options came to notice through "X Factor" - The Collective in Australia, Fourtunate and FYD in the UK.
3. Which of these actresses was just "wright" for the role of Princess Buttercup in the Princess Bride (1987)?

Answer: Robin Wright

Robin Wright initially starred in the TV series "Santa Barbara" from 1984-1988, earning multiple Daytime Emmy nominations. "The Princess Bride" was her second movie.

Wright went on to garner further recognition as Tom Hanks' love interest, Jenny, in "Forrest Gump."

Bonnie Wright played Ginny Weasley in the "Harry Potter" film series; Teresa Wright received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in "Mrs Miniver (1942); and Gillian Wright is perhaps best known for playing the role of Jean Slater in the BBC's "EastEnders".
4. Along with the hit songs "Mandy" and "Can't Smile Without You," singer/composer Barry Manilow is also known for which of the following?

Answer: I Write the Songs

"I Write the Songs" reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1976. Ironically, singer Barry Manilow didn't write this one! Singer, songwriter, record producer - and ex-member of The Beach Boys - Bruce Johnston penned the words in 1975.

"Paperback Writer" was a Beatles hit, written by McCartney and Lennon. "Right Here, Right Now" was released by Fatboy Slim; and "Every Day I Write the Book" was written and performed by Elvis Costello.
5. Referred to by some as Australia's first international pop star, "Little" Stevie Wright fronted which 1960's band, before embarking on a solo career?

Answer: The Easybeats

"The Easybeats" formed in 1964, and were the first Australian rock and roll act to produce an international hit, "Friday on My Mind," two years later.

Lead singer Stevie Wright's most successful solo effort was "Evie", Parts 1,2 & 3. He was also in the Australian stage production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" from 1972-1973. As with many artists of the era, substance abuse became a tragic part of his life, and the dizzy heights achieved by the Easybeats in their heyday largely eluded him.
6. Actress Queen Latifah's film career began in 1991. In which of the following did she have the lead role in 2010?

Answer: Just Wright

Born Dana Elaine Owens, Queen Latifah boasts a string of accomplishments in music, television and film. She received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in "Chicago", losing to co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Producing and starring in "Just Wright" saw Latifah achieve further award nominations from the NAACP and others. In this romantic comedy, she plays the part of physical therapist Leslie Wright, who falls in love with injured New Jersey Nets player Scott McKnight. McKnight forms a relationship with Wright's beautiful but ambitious sister, Morgan, and a complicated love triangle (and predictable outcome) ensue.

Possible film sub-title: "It'll be all Wright on the McKnight"? Ouch! Maybe not.
7. Some might suggest that actor Christian Slater "came of age" in which 2012 movie?

Answer: Rites of Passage

"Rites of Passage" introduces several anthropology students who want to mark their transition into manhood with a spiritual ceremony. They gather at a remote ranch which is the site of an Indian burial ground...and the stereotypes roll out: a psychotic drug addict, his deranged farmhand brother (Slater), murder, deviant behaviour, and blatant racism to cap it off. Not exactly your family-friendly movie!

All four options are actual film titles, however Slater starred only in "Rites of Passage". He in fact made his movie debut some thirty one years earlier, with a small role in "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1985). A string of successes in well known movies followed, with "Heathers" (1989), "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" (1991), and "Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles" (1994) among them.
8. While separated from her by distance, Paul Simon (of Simon and Garfunkel) penned which of these songs to his wife? A line or two might help: "I'm out in the jungle, I'm hungry to hear you. Send me a card, I'm waiting so hard to be near you..."

Answer: Why Don't You Write Me?

"Why Don't You Write Me?" was Simon's first experiment with reggae, a genre he would later use in his solo career.

The Greg Kihn Band brought us "The Break-up Song", Adrian Gurvitz wrote and performed "Classic" and the music and lyrics for "Writer in the Sun" came from Donovan.
9. The title of which 1982 movie hints at a rare "miss" by actor Sean Connery?

Answer: Wrong is Right (1982)

Of Connery's vast body of film work, "Wrong is Right" unfortunately ranks (pun intended) near the bottom in terms of box office receipts. Globe-trotting reporter Patrick Hale averts conflict between Israel, a fictional Arab state and the US after terrorists are handed two suitcase nukes.

Undoubtedly most recognised for his portrayal of James Bond in seven movies between 1962 and 1983, Sir Sean was voted Sexiest Man of the Century by "People Magazine" in 1999. He has won numerous awards, and, despite officially retiring from acting in 2006, continues to contribute to the industry in a variety of ways.
10. Which star of "Last Rites" (1988) was born Thomas Michael Moore? Need help? He also played Butch Cassidy in "Butch and Sundance: The Early Days" (1979), in part because of his resemblance to Paul Newman, who starred in the 1969 original.

Answer: Tom Berenger

In "Last Rites" Berenger stars as Father Michael Pace, a New York priest who fights to protect the mistress of a murdered Mafia Don. Personal family links to the mob further complicate his situation.

In a career which began with soap operas in the 1970s, Berenger's movie roles in "Inception", "Platoon", "The Big Chill", "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Sniper" are among his most significant.
