Angelina Jolie's association with this cause began when she was shooting for her action movie "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" in Cambodia. Deeply moved by the condition of the people in this war-torn country, she began visiting other similar territories around the world as part of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Her visits included trips to Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Pakistan, and in August 2001, she was declared a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR. Jolie also published a book titled "Notes from My Travels" on her experiences in these places, the proceeds of which were donated to the UNHCR.

In 2012, she was promoted to the rank of Special Envoy in recognition of her work to bring attention to the plight of people in areas of strife.

Elton John had started working with different charities in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention in the 1980s. In 1986, he recorded a single "That's What Friends Are For", along with others like Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. The money raised was donated to the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

Ryan White was a young hemophiliac who had acquired AIDS during a blood transfusion. He worked extensively to fight against the discrimination shown to AIDS victims. In 1990, White died from complications relating to AIDS, and Elton John was one of the pallbearers at his funeral. His death inspired the singer to start the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992.

The damage caused to the city of New Orleans in Louisiana was further compounded by the levee breaches in different parts of the city, resulting in a storm surge that left almost eight percent of the city under water.

Brad Pitt's Make It Right foundation was founded with an aim to build 150 new houses in the Ninth Ward region of New Orleans which had experienced catastrophic flooding during Hurricane Katrina.

Michael J. Fox is a Canadian actor who has played memorable roles including that of Marty McFly in the "Back to the Future" trilogy and Alex Keaton in the "Family Ties" television series. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the early 1990s. He set up the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000, which has funded studies seeking a cure for this disease.

In 2006, the foundation also set up a grassroots level team to raise awareness regarding Parkinson's through various activities.

Farm Aid was inspired by the Live Aid concert, and the first concert was held in September 1985. It was organised by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young. Farm Aid went on to become an annual event, and the money raised has been used to provide different types of assistance to farmers in the United States of America.

The conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan began in 2003 when rebel groups began an armed warfare against the government alleging oppression of the country's non-Arab population. The exact number of casualties is not known, but estimates range up to beyond 400,000.

George Clooney spoke out against the conflict at the Save Darfur rally held in Washington D.C. in 2006, and then went on to make a documentary called "A Journey to Darfur", highlighting the plight of the people affected. Clooney also spoke to the UN Security Council and the governments of countries like Egypt, China and Germany, urging them to take appropriate actions to help end the war.

Haiti was struck by an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 in January 2010. The quake and the subsequent aftershocks resulted in a death toll of over 150,000. Penn set up the J/P Haitian Relief Organization along with Sanela Diana Jenkins to assist with the relief efforts.

The organization initially supported those rendered homeless and forced to leave in camps. It later moved on to look at also helping to provide education, health and economic development opportunities in the country.
