Answer: Lou Costello

According to William 'Bud' Abbott, the famous 'Who's on first' routine originated from an older sketch called 'Who's the Boss'. The comedic premise is the misunderstanding arising from the question (who, where etc) being the same as the name of the individual under consideration (Mr Who, Mr Where etc) - hence 'Who's on first'? 'Yes'! Their first appearance together was on the 'Kate Smith Hour' radio show in 1938. Abbott and Costello appeared in 37 films together between 1940 and 1959, as well as a compilation film in 1965 where they played themselves.

In addition to their film careers, they continued to enjoy great popularity with their TV and radio shows.
2. "Our military friends have advised us of some strange radio broadcasts coming from Ohio. Detective, your task is to identify the origins of these signals. Answer: Cincinnati

'WKRP Cincinnati' was a US situation comedy that ran from 1978 to 1982. It was a fictionalized account of life in a radio station, devised by Hugh Wilson, based on his experiences in working at a Top 40 radio station in Atlanta. There were 88 episodes made over four seasons.

As well as comedy, based largely on character interactions, the show featured large amounts of contemporary music. The success of Blondie's hit, 'Heart of Glass' in the US was partially attributed to its airplay on this show.
3. "Detective, one of our own has gone missing! She was last seen on the set of a 1980s television show in the company of Mary Beth Lacey. Our officer also used the name Sharon Gless. We suspect foul play as this duo was highly successful in apprehending dangerous criminals in Manhattan." Can you identify our missing officer?

Answer: Christine Cagney

The CBS network showed 125 episodes of Cagney and Lacey between 1982 and 1988. The series followed a pilot episode with Loretta Swit playing the role of Detective Christine Cagney. Swit was not able to continue in this role due to her concurrent commitment as 'Margaret Houlihan' in 'M.A.S.H.'. For the first season of six episodes in 1982-3, Meg Foster played Cagney but was then then replaced by Sharon Gless.

The show was awarded eight Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe Award (Sharon Gless for Best Actress in a drama series, 1985).

After, Cagney and Lacey, Tyne Daley (Lacey) moved on to star in 'Judging Amy', while Gless played Debbie Novotny in 'Queer as Folk' from 2000 to 2005.

Answer: Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage was born Nicholas Kim Coppola in California, 1964. His father was a professor of comparative literature and brother of the director, Francis Ford Coppola. Since then he has starred in a number of major films including 'Rumble Fish', 'Peggy Sue got Married', 'City of Angels' and 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'.

He received the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1996 for his portrayal of Ben Sanderson in 'Leaving Las Vegas'.

Answer: Cats

'Cats' the musical, based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats", was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The storyline follows a groups of cats, 'the Jellicles', as they come together one night for a ball. Their leader 'Old Deuteronomy' has to choose one cat to be reborn to a new life on the Heaviside Layer. 'Memory', the most well-known song from this musical, was written by Trevor Nunn from a separate Eliot poem, "Rhapsody on a Windy Night".

Answer: Eric Clapton

Eric 'Slowhand' Clapton's talents as a guitarist first came to widespread prominence after joining The Yardbirds in 1963. After a brief stint with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, he left to form Cream, one of the earliest "supergroups" with Jack Bruce on bass and Ginger Baker on drums. By 1967, Clapton was vying with the new phenomenon, Jimi Hendrix, for the title of 'world's best guitarist', although Clapton eschewed such labels. After the break-up of Cream, Clapton helped form Blind Faith and then Derek and the Dominoes. His successful solo career during the 1970s and early 1980s was intermixed with periods of drug and alcohol dependence. He has continued to tour and release albums for the next two decades.

His live, acoustic 'Unplugged' album (1992) was hugely successful and featured the hauntingly beautiful 'Tears in Heaven' written as a dedication to his young son, Conor, who had died in a tragic accident. Clapton has also composed music and soundtracks for films and television; one highlight was his brilliant mood music for the 1985 thriller 'Edge of Darkness'. He has received many accolades and awards including three Grammy Awards for 'Tears in Heaven', a 2006 Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award (for Cream) and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times (the third time in 2000 as a solo performer).

Answer: Jim Croce

Jim Croce's interest in music wasn't fully realized until he attended Villanova College (Pennsylvania) in 1964. He formed bands and toured Africa and the Middle East. Back in the US, his early gigs were at coffeehouses where he played styles ranging from folk music to rock'n'roll and blues.

He and his wife released an album 'Jim and Ingrid Croce' in 1968 and they went on the road for two years to promote it. They lost interest in music and Jim got a job driving trucks. By 1972, the passion had resurfaced and Jim received a three-record contract from ABC records. Three hit singles 'Time in a Bottle', 'You Don't Mess Around with Jim' and 'Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)' were then followed in July 1973 with his most successful single 'Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown'. Tragically, Croce and four other people were killed in the crash of a small plane on Sept 23, 1973, the same day as his single 'I Got a Name' was released.

Since then he has made the sequels to 'Terminator', Aliens (1986), the comedy-drama 'True Lies' (1994) and blockbusters 'Titanic' (1997) and 'Avatar' (2009).

In addition to strong support from the viewing public, these films have also received a total of 21 Academy Awards (one as Best Director). Since 2002, Cameron has also filmed a large number of documentaries, largely focusing on exploration and the natural world.

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash's songs were deeply reflective of the questions, inconsistencies and divisions he saw in society. He was a man conflicted by his strongly christian views and the flaws he saw in himself. Born in Arkansas in 1932, Cash's early influences were gospel music and the radio.

While studying to be a radio announcer in Memphis, he impressed producer Sam Phillips with some rockabilly tunes and his career was launched. 'Hey Porter' and 'Cry! Cry! Cry!' were moderately successful on the country hit parade in 1955. 'Folsom Prison Blues' then reached number five, followed by 'I Walk the Line' which gave Cash his first number one country song - it also reached the top 20 on the pop charts. Johnny Cash was a frequent guest on TV shows and then starred in his own eponymous show from 1969 to 1971.

He dressed in black to reflect his mourning at the many injustices he saw, including poverty and the Vietnam War. In 1980, he became the youngest living inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Despite being very unwell, he kept performing after the death of his wife, June Carter in May 2003, recording sixty more songs in the last four months of his life, before dying of complications from diabetes on Sept 12 that year.

Answer: Cannes

Cannes is a very popular seaside resort on the French Riviera in south-east France on the Mediterranean Sea. The name of Cannes first appears in 1030 AD in a deed of donation to the Abbot, with mention of the port, De Portu Canue. Although it has been proposed that the name is derived from canna (a common reed in the region), it is argued that it is more probably derived from a Ligurian word meaning 'a perched settlement' (above the beach).

In contemporary times, Cannes has become an attractive venue for meetings (including the 2011 G20 summit), and of course the International Film Festival. This highly popular and acclaimed festival has been held annually since 1946 and has become an important showcase for new films, especially from the European film industry, There are award categories for 'innovative and audacious' films, student films and best first films as well as the usual 'Best Actor', 'Best Actress', 'Best Director', 'Best Short Film' and 'Best Screenplay'. The most highly acclaimed awards are the 'Palm d'Or' (Golden Palm, awarded to the Director of the Best Film), the 'Grand Prix' (Grand Prize of the Festival) and the 'Prix du Jury' (Jury Prize).
