The creators of Superman, Joe Schuster and Jerry Siegel, had originally developed Superman as a newspaper comic strip and were rejected. National Comics (now DC) were looking for a new idea to publish in their books and tried the Superman character. Action #1 is considered to be the forerunner of all superhero comics.

Robin was the first teen-aged sidekick in comics. The character was intended to give the young comics reader of the day a hero that they could more closely associate with.

The publishers allowed Stan Lee to experiment with a new character he had developed, Spider-Man, in this final issue. The feedback for Spider-Man was so positive that his own title, Amazing Spider-Man, was launched in March 1963.

Tony Stark, a rich industrialist, invented the Iron Man armor while a prisoner in Vietnam. He had suffered an injury to his heart and the armor was actually needed to keep him alive.

Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston who also played a role in inventing the modern polygraph. She was seen as a way to get girls interested in comics.

Many of comics so called "Golden Age" heroes had lost much of their popularity in the 40's and early 50's and had faded away. DC decided to re-introduce some of these characters with new origins, identities and powers. The Flash was the first DC character that this was done with.

Another of the 1950's re-vamped characters. The Green Lantern's origin and powers were updated. The new GL was a test pilot and member of an interstellar peace keeping force.

Although at first just a back-up character, Aquaman was one of the few superheroes to "survive" the declining popularity of that genre in the 1940's.

Flash Comics, like many comics of the day, was an anthology series. Many characters including the three mentioned as well as the Black Canary had their debut in this series.

Originally published by Fawcett, DC filed a lawsuit in 1941 claiming that Fawcett had infringed on their copyright of Superman. After years of legal wrangling Fawcett ceased publishing superhero comics in 1951. DC acquired the rights to Captain Marvel in the early 70's, however Marvel had copyrighted it's own Captain Marvel character in the interim.

While DC is able to use the character they can not use Captain Marvel in the title of their books. DC uses SHAZAM! (Captain Marvel's magic word) in the title of books about this character.

Namor, the Sub-Mariner was Marvel's first mutant character. He is the King of the undersea kingdom of Atlantis and while he has been viewed as a hero, more often then not he is at odds with the surface dwellers.
