Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Since the first one appeared in 1939, there have been three comic book Superheroes called Blue Beetle. Which of these was NOT one of their true identities?

Answer: Mike Cruz

Dan Garret (later Garrett) was the original Blue Beetle, and first appeared in 1939, in issue one of "Mystery Men" comic. He was drawn by Charles Nicholson.
Ted Kord was originally a student/sidekick of Dan Garret, and when Garret was killed he "passed on the torch" so to speak and Ted Kord became the new Blue Beetle. Originally Ted was a creation of Charlton Comics, and was later published by DC Comics. Ted was drawn by Steve Ditko, and first appeared as a peripheral character in "Captain Atom" issue 83, in 1966.
The third incarnation of Blue Beetle was Jaime Reyes, who found the 'mystic scarab of power' on the ground, took it home, and awoke to find it had fused to his skeleton and made him the Blue Beetle while he slept. Jaime's first appearance was in "Infinite Crisis" issue 3, in 2006, published by DC Comics.
2. There have been two comic book characters named the Human Fly, one villain and one Superhero. The Marvel Comics "The Human Fly" series ran for nineteen issues in the late 1970s, and the Heroic Human Fly character was based on a real life stuntman. Who was this 'real life Superhero'?

Answer: Rick Rojatt

The Human Fly was a stunt man who was injured in a dreadful accident. After he recovered, and had large parts of his skeleton replaced with a metal one, he dedicated himself to raising money for children's charities, in his new persona of Human Fly. This led him into conflict with various villains who would try to steal the money he raised.
Rick Rojatt was an injured stuntman and charity fundraiser in real life, and the publishers did eventually confirm that he was the basis of the Human Fly character.
Vic Armstrong was the first stuntman to win an Oscar and a BAFTA Award, for his contributions to safety and long career in the film indutry.
3. Veronica Dultry was the alter ego of the only female member of the Ani-men, and was also later a Femizon and a member of the Masters of Evil. Which of these characters is Veronica transformed into?

Answer: Dragonfly

4. Janet van Dyne and Henry 'Hank' Pym were a married couple who had a double life as Superheroes. Who were their insectile alter egos?

Answer: Ant Man and The Wasp

Janet and Hank were among the founding members of The Avengers crime fighting Superhero team.
Janet, as The Wasp, first appeared in 1963, in issue number 44 of "Tales to Astonish". Eventually, her character was killed off and Henry Pym took over as The Wasp from 2008 onwards.
"The Avengers" series of comic books began in September 1963, and were created and drawn by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
5. Firefly is a film industry special effects man who turns to crime in order to indulge his pyromaniac tendencies. He is an enemy of Batman and Robin, and first appeared in "Detective Comics" issue 184, way back in 1952. Who is the alter ego of Firefly? (Please note: - In this question I do NOT mean Ted Carson who is "the other" Firefly)

Answer: Garfield Lynns

Firefly has also made appearances as a villain fighting against the Creeper and the Outsiders.
The character was created for DC Comics by Dick Sprang and France Herron.
The 'other' firefly, Ted Carson, was the heir to a gold mining fortune who frittered it all away and turned to a life of crime to keep up his luxury lifestyle. He has also appeared with Batman, and was even his love rival at one point, as they competed for the affections of Kathy Kane.
6. Perhaps one of the best known comic book villains named for an invertebrate is Doctor Octopus. His alter ego is Otto Octavius, but do you remember his middle name?

Answer: Gunther

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Doctor Octopus, or "Doc Ock" as he is sometimes called, is one of Spiderman's most ruthless and enduring enemies. His first appearance, when he was called Octavious rather than Octavius, was in "Amazing Spider Man" issue 3, in July 1963.
7. The cartoon character Gnorm Gnat could perhaps be described as a "successful failure" and has been said to be "part of comic strip folklore". Answer: Jim Davis

Jim Davis went on to have great success with Garfield. If you look at a drawing of Gnorm, there is some resemblance to Garfield, especially around the eyes, even though gnats and cats are pretty far apart physically speaking!

At one point, he kidnaps Batman and discovers that he and Bruce Wayne are one and the same, but a fortuitous blow to the head leaves him with amnesia before he can reveal this to anyone else.
His first appearance was in "Batman" issue 63, in 1951, when he was only identified by his prison number, and as Cameron van Cleer. It was only later, in 1992, that a reappearance in "Batman: Shadow of the Bat" issue 7, revealed his real Drury Walker identity.
