Mrs. Gump named Forrest after Nathan Bedford Forrest, Confederate general and an early member of the KKK, as reminder that people do things that sometimes just don't make sense. Forrest, portrayed by Tom Hanks on the silver screen, is a naïve young man but with a big, gentle heart.

He does not understand most things around him and comically finds himself in important moments in American history. In the novel from which the movie is based on, Forrest is not as naïve as portrayed in the film. In the book, he has a tendency to be a little devious and quite good with numbers.

Ninny is an elderly woman confined to a nursing home who tells Evelyn the story of her hometown of Whistle Stop, Alabama, which is now abandoned. Ninny starts her story with her sister-in-law Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) who is friends with Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker). Ruth moves away from Whsitle Stop after she marries but returns to escape her abusive husband and opens a café.

However, her husband Frank (Nick Searcy) follows her and then disappears. Idgie is placed on trial for his murder.

Calpurnia is the African-American housekeeper for the Finches. Originally, Scout dislikes her but soon she looks at Calpurnia as a mother-figure. At the time the book takes place (during the Great Depression) there were very few educated African-Americans in the U.S., especially in the Deep South like Alabama. Calpurnia teaches Scout how to read and write.

The guys accidentally shoplifted, which they confess to, but that is enough to charge Bill for the murder.

They call upon their street-smart family and friends from New York, including Billy's cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci) and his fiancé Mona Lisa (Marisa Tomei) for legal assistance. Fred Gwynne plays Chamberlain Haller, a stereotypical southern judge who is baffled by Vinny's antics.
