Episodes typically depicted the struggles of their dating life, personality clashes and their families. Estelle Getty also starred as Sophia, Dorothy's old-school, sarcastic Sicilian mother.

The show was known in particular for its fashion among the male leads, Crockett in particular. Crockett usually wore an Italian jacket wide open with a T-shirt underneath and sunglasses.

He also drove stylish, Italian cars and was generally seen living way beyond what a Vice Squad member could afford in real life.
