On September 1, 1956, Elvis bought his mother, Gladys, a pink Cadillac. The Cadillac is at Graceland and can be viewed during the tour.

In 1953, at a cost of $4.00, Elvis recorded a demo of "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartache Begins" at the Memphis Recording Service, a subdivision of Sun Records. This demo he gave to his mother as a belated birthday present.

In the summer of 1954, at the suggestion of his assistant Marion Keisker, Sam Phillips contacted Elvis about recording a song. When Elvis fails to sing "Without You" to Phillips' satisfaction, he is asked what he can sing and what his range is. Elvis then begins to sing some of his favorite songs, and Phillips is impressed. Phillips introduces Scotty Moore and Bill Black to Elvis and the trio rehearse for many days. In July 5, 1954, Elvis, for fun, begins to sing an upbeat version of "That's All Right Mama" and Phillips likes the sound so much, that it is recorded and released and becomes a hit. This is the beginning of the legend that is Elvis.

In October 1954, Elvis appeared on the "Louisiana Hayride" and is loved so much that in November of 1954, he is signed to a one year contract of 52 shows. During his time with the "Louisiana Hayride," he meets Colonel Tom Parker, who is so impressed with Elvis that he becomes his manager and promoter, and launches Elvis into the legend that he became.

On March 17, 1957, Elvis bought Graceland Mansion for $100,000.00, as a present for his mother. The Presleys moved in the mansion in May of 1957.

Graceland received its name from Grace Toof, whose family owned the land on which Graceland sits upon. In 1940, Toof's neice, Grace, inherited the property and built a colonial mansion. In 1957, after over one hundred years in the Toof family, the land was sold.
