Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actress won an Emmy for her portrayal of cynical and ambitious New York lawyer Miranda Hobbes in a popular television sitcom based on the book of the same name by Candace Bushnell?

Answer: Cynthia Nixon

"Sex and the City" ran for six years, from 1998 to 2004 and won multiple television awards. Cynthia Nixon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall played four young women living their lives in New York City.

Miranda Hobbes was an ambitious, successful and skeptical lawyer who considered men and relationships with a cynical air. She acts as the rational voice of reason to the more optimistic and romantic Carrie Bradshaw. Despite the cynicism, Miranda was given a happy ending when she married her on-again off-again boyfriend and had a son.
2. In which stage musical, adapted for the big screen in 2002, does an attorney called Billy Flynn advise an adulterous housewife charged with murder that she should tell the court that "They Both Reached for the Gun"?

Answer: Chicago

Set in prohibition-era Chiago, "Chiacgo" is a satirical look at the dawn of celebrity culture. When Roxie Hart is charged with the murder of her lover, attorney/ringmaster Billy Flynn steps in to turn the court hearing into a spectacle, drawing sympathy and interest from the public and ultimately leading to her acquittal.

Richard Gere portrayed Billy Flynn in the 2002 movie version of "Chiacgo", but the character has been portrayed numerous times since the 1970s by many famous men, including David Hasselhoff, John Barrowman, Jerry Springer and Marti Pellow.
3. In 1985, folk singer Tom Paxton released a single in which he predicted that the United States would have a huge number of lawyers with just one decade. Among other things, the song predicted "Lawyers around every bend in the road. Lawyers in every tree. Lawyers in restaurants. Lawyers in clubs. Lawyers behind every door". What was the name of the song?

Answer: One Million Lawyers

Released from the album "One Million Lawyers and Other Disasters", "One Million Lawyers" was a minor hit, but Paxton's popularity did not become extensive until much later in his career.

Throughout the song, Tom Paxton compared the increasing number of lawyers in the United States to disasters such a plague of locusts and flash floods. His cynicism as to the value that lawyers add to society was apparent throughout the lyrics, which included lines such as "In ten years we're gonna have one million lawyers. How much can a poor nation stand?"
4. Often seen arguing with "the Blue Haired Lawyer" in television cartoon "The Simpsons", what is the name of the inept, alcoholic lawyer often instructed by members of the Simpson family for his cheap rates?

Answer: Lionel Hutz

Lionel Hutz first appeared as Bart Simpson's representative in a claim against Mr Burns in the season two episode "Bart Gets Hit by a Car". He has always been portrayed as unethical and incompetent, and his alcoholism is a running minor gag. He is often shown to have severe financial difficulties and, as such, he has also been seen working as a real estate salesman and a babysitter to earn extra money.

He was voiced by Phil Hartman, who died in 1998. Following Hartman's death, the character was not seen speaking again. Eventually, Lionel Hutz was retired in season 9.
5. Shakespeare mentioned the law more than any other profession throughout his works. His portrayals and references to lawyers, however, were not always kind. In which of his more obscure plays did Shakespeare include the line "Crack the lawyer's voice, that he may never more false title plead, nor sound his quillets shrilly"?

Answer: Timon of Athens

It is unknown what Shakespeare did in much of the time between his leaving Stratford-Upon-Avon and his resurfacing as a playwright in London. It is possible, however, that he was involved with the law in some capacity, given his extensive legal knowledge and frequent references to the law and its protagonists.

Timon of Athens is a historical play about an Athenian called Timon and his life. It is usually regarded as a tragedy, but it is a difficult work and is considered by some to be a "problem play", meaning that it is not easily understood nor categorised.

Perhaps the most famous line from Shakespeare's plays, so often quoted by those who consider all lawyers to be ambulance-chasers, is "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" from Henry VI, Part 2.
6. "Lawyerbot" is the pseudonym given to a member of the team of employees that work on a well-known online virtual pet community. Players are informed that "Lawyerbot" is responsible for all legal matters in respect of the community and that he has an obsession with "Usuki Dolls". Which virtual online pet community employes Lawyerbot?

Answer: Neopets

"Lawyerbot" is usually depicted on Neopets.com as a robot wearing a green and red bow tie. His player account shows that he has two pets, both of them "Usuls" (a fictional breed akin to a rabbit) named "Accidentes" and "FrivolousLawsuit".

"Usuki Dolls" are a collectible toy based on the Usul pets that can be bought and sold in the virtual community. Real-life versions have also been made since Neopets began producing merchandise.
7. This lawyer's efforts helped get a famous football player acquitted in one of the most news-worthy and reported-on cases of modern times, though he later admitted to the New York Times that "I have doubts... I struggle with the blood evidence". However, since his death in 2003, he has become equally famous as the father of TV personalities Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Rob. Who was this attorney?

Answer: Robert Kardashian

Robert Kardashian was a great friend of O.J. Simpson. Following Simpson's arrest, Kardashian agreed to act as a volunteer legal assistant on his case in order to remain close throughout the proceedings. Though he later expressed his doubt as to Simpson's innocence, the US doctrine of double jeopardy has largely kept Simpson free from further investigation. The high-profile case was covered by journalists across the world, and it has been widely speculated that Simpson was, indeed, guilty following many alleged confessions and publication of DNA evidence that was supposedly obtained from the murder scenes.

Following Kardashian's death in 2003, his four children and first wife have become household names through the E! network's television show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians".
8. This American former-lawyer, politician, and author is best known for his legal thriller novels. His novels are frequently adapted for film and have inlcuded "The Firm" (1993) starring Tom Cruise and "Runaway Jury" (2003) starring John Cusack and Gene Hackman. What is his name?

Answer: John Grisham

John Grisham had practiced law in the US state of Mississippi for over 10 years before he overheard a case which gave him the idea for his first novel, "A Time to Kill", which was published in 1989. As well as legal thriller, Grisham has written a number of novels about life in the rural south of the United States, including "The Painted House" (2001).
9. Elle Woods (and her little dog Bruiser) went to Harvard Law School to try to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner, but he'd moved on with an engagement to a fellow student named Vivian Kensington. Despite finding it difficult at first, Elle proved her worth by helping to win a major criminal trial through her knowledge of haircare. What was the name of the movie (and later, stage musical) in which this all happened?

Answer: Legally Blonde

"Legally Blonde" (2001) starred Reese Witherspoon as platinum blonde sorority girl Elle Woods, who proved that appearances can be deceiving as she proved herself worthy of a place at Harvard and became a great lawyer.

The movie was so popular that it was made into a musical which played on both Broadway and London West End stages.

Many people do not realise that the movie, and later the musical, were based on a novel of the same name by Amanda Brown.
10. Probably one of the most famous fictional lawyers of all time, this crack-shot, justice-driven man from the deep South of the US won legions of readers' hearts with his assertions that "its a sin to kill a mockingbird". Famously played by Gregory Peck in the 1962 movie version of Harper Lee's classic novel, this character's name is now synonymous with those lawyers that strive for justice over ease. What is his name?

Answer: Atticus Finch

"To Kill a Mockingbird" tells the story of a black man accused of the rape of a white woman in segregated Alabama. Atticus Finch's attempts to prove his blatant innocence and the unfortunate prejudice and injustice that follow have been the inspiration for many stories since.

Harper Lee based many of the characters in her novel on people she knew or had met. Her father was a lawyer like Atticus, and had defended black men in Alabama. Following their convictions and hangings, he never got involved in another criminal trial.
