The character began the series as a detective for the New York City Police Department and was promoted to Captain by season 21. Olivia Benson has been portrayed by actress Mariska Hargitay ever since the series began. Olivia Benson is currently one of the longest running live action characters in television history after appearing in over 450 episodes.
She has even appeared on the original "Law & Order" which ran on NBC from 1990-2010.
2. Frank Drebin

Frank Drebin was a detective for the Los Angeles Police Department in the "The Naked Gun" series of comedy films. The character was famously portrayed by the late Leslie Nielsen (1926-2010) and was known for his buffoonery as much as his crime fighting skills.
The first movie in the series "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" was released in 1988 and had Detective Drebin involved in uncovering a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II. Sgt. Carey Mahoney was one of the original cadets from the "Police Academy" comedy film series. In the films, he was played by actor Steve Guttenberg beginning with the first "Police Academy" in 1984. Carey Mahoney was portrayed as a troublemaker and trickster, who was always looking for ways to prank his colleagues and superiors.
The character would be featured in the next three "Police Academy" sequels. "Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol" (1987) would be the final film to feature the original character. Carey Mahoney was also featured in the "Police Academy" animated series in 1988, but his voice was provided by another actor.

Alex Murphy was an officer for the Detroit Police Department in a future where crime was at an all time high. In the original "RoboCop" (1987), Alex Murphy was viciously murdered by a powerful street gang during an investigation. His body would be used as the base for a police cyborg which the city hoped would help solve Detroit's rampant crime problem.
While RoboCop was designed to be non-sentient, Alex Murphy's memories would eventually start to resurface. The character was portrayed by actor Peter Weller in the original three "RoboCop" films. Joel Kinnaman took over the role for the 2014 reboot of "RoboCop".
6. Roger Murtaugh

Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) were characters from the "Lethal Weapon" action film series. Both men were both Sergeants with the Los Angeles Police Department. The two officers were reluctant to partner with each other in the first "Lethal Weapon" (1987), but would become best friends by the end of "Lethal Weapon 4" (1998). "Lethal Weapon" was rebooted as a television series by FOX in 2016 and featured Damon Wayans as Sgt. Murtaugh and Clayne Crawford as Sgt. Riggs.
7. Cole Phelps

Cole Phelps was a detective for the Los Angeles Police Department in the video game "L.A. Noire", which was released for multiple game systems in 2011. Cole Phelps joined the police force shortly after World War II concluded. Cole's strong ability to analyze clues and interrogate suspects helped him climb the ranks of the police force and he became one of L.A.'s most skilled crime fighters.
However, Cole's success would be tainted following a scandal that saw him bumped down to the arson squad. Cole Phelps would later be killed in the game's final mission.

Jill Valentine is one of the major characters in the "Resident Evil" video game franchise. Jill and her partner Chris Redfield are both police officers from the fictional Raccoon City. The first "Resident Evil" was released for multiple game platforms in 1996.
In the first game, Jill and Chris became trapped in a mansion that was infested with zombies and other strange creatures. The character returned for some but not all "Resident Evil" sequels and spinoffs.
