Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although the term supermodel only achieved widespread public use in the second half of the 20th century, the term was first used in the 19th century, although not then applied to any specific individual. Which of these models, whose career flourished between 1935 and the early 1950s, is considered by many to be the first modern supermodel?

Answer: Lisa Fonssagrives

While the other woman have all been considered supermodels, Naomi Campbell (born 1970), Linda Evangelista (born 1965) and Christie Brinkley (born 1954) were not even alive during Lisa Fonssagrives's heyday. Their careers started well after Lisa Fonssagrives (1911-1992) had stopped modeling and turned to a career as a sculptor.

The Swedish model started as an artist and dancer, moving to Paris to pursue a dance career. While there, she was persuaded to become involved in modeling, and worked with many of the best known photographers of the time, including Fernand Fonssagrives whom she married in 1935, and whose name she continued to use professionally even after their divorce.

She moved to the United States in 1939, and over the ensuing years appeared in both fashion magazines (especially 'Vogue') and more general interest magazines such as 'Life' and 'Time'.

Her face was everywhere!
2. Which of these models, forever associated with the lifestyle referred to as Swinging London during the 1960s, caused a major stir when she wore a miniskirt to a Melbourne racetrack in 1965?

Answer: Jean Shrimpton

Melbourne, at that time, was a fair few years behind the fashion trends of London, and those who attended such an important social event as the Melbourne Cup Carnival dressed formally, including hats and gloves, even when the temperature made such attire extremely uncomfortable. Shrimpton had been flown out (and paid an appearance fee around that of the annual worker's wage at the time) to be part of the official activities of the carnival. When she showed up in a sleeveless A-line dress that ended about four inches above her knees, hatless, gloveless and barelegged in the heat, people were shocked. Not only was she booed on the day, the outrage poured over into the newspapers. She arrived for her second day of duties in a much more conservative suit, with all the requisite trappings.

Peggy Moffit is remembered for modeling Rudi Gernreich's monokini; Verushka appeared in the 1966 film 'Blow Up'; Marisa Berenson was called "the girl of the 70s" by Yves Saint Laurent.
3. In February of 1968 'Glamour' published an article titled '19 SUPERMODELS -- their disciplines, their makeup, their fetishes and the inside qualities of feeling and spirit that give their beauty its characters, its SUPER-SUCCESS.' Which of these models was included in this list?

Answer: Twiggy

All of these have been called supermodels (and Janice Dickinson has claimed to have invented the term in 1979), but only Leslie Hornby (now Leslie Lawson), known as Twiggy, appeared on the 1968 list of supermodels. She was known for her waifish appearance - she was very thin (the source of the childhood nickname 'Twigs' that was turned into her modeling name), with short cropped hair and amazingly prominent eyelashes. Apparently she used to wear three pairs of false eyelashes at once to create the effect! Starting from a series of photos to be displayed in the salon of the hairdresser who first cut her hair short, she quickly appeared in a featured newspaper article, followed by all kinds of fashion magazines.

She had a look that fit perfectly with what was perceived as the swinging times.

Although she has been criticized as setting a trend towards unnaturally thin body shapes for models, she has always stated that she was just naturally thin, despite eating lots of sensible, wholesome food.

After four years at the top of the modeling industry, she retired to pursue a career in acting and singing.
4. Which of these supermodels has had a lengthy association with Revlon cosmetics, has been on the cover of 'American Vogue' over 20 times, and was involved in a serious accident at the age of 57 due to her love of motorcycles?

Answer: Lauren Hutton

Lauren Hutton started the trend towards models getting immense contracts for becoming the face of a cosmetic company when she signed a million-dollar contract with Revlon in 1974. The contract lapsed after a few years, but was reinstated after another ten years so that she could be the spokesperson for their moisturizers (apparently, that is the appropriate cosmetic for a fifty-year-old).

She was noted for having a gap between her front teeth, which she initially tried to disguise, then decided to treat as a distinguishing characteristic. Lauren Hutton has had an extensive acting career, starting with 'Paper Lion' in 1968.

She played the secretary of a sports reporter (played by Alan Alda) who decided to try to play with a professional football team in order to get a story.

The original reporter, George Plimpton, got an entire book (and subsequent movie) out of his experience.
5. 1975 was a big year for Margaux Hemingway: she appeared on the cover of 'Time' in June; 'American Vogue' had her on the cover in September, and decreed that she was a supermodel; Fabergé signed her to a million-dollar contract to be the focus of the advertising campaign for their planned release of a new perfume. What fragrance did they launch in 1976?

Answer: Babe

Margaux Hemingway's participation in the highly successful campaign for Babe secured her reputation as one of the top models of her time, making her an international celebrity. As well as modeling, she appeared in a number of movies, starting with the 1976 film 'Lipstick', which also featured her younger sister Mariel.

After growing up on the Idaho farm of her grandfather, Ernest Hemingway, she moved to New York City and struggled to come to terms with the high-powered lifestyle she encountered there.

As well as coping with difficult familial relationships, she suffered from alcoholism, bulimia, and depression, and was found dead from an overdose of phenobarbital at the age of 42.
6. Which of these talented black supermodels was NOT born in the United States?

Answer: Iman

Iman, whose birth name was Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, was born in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. While studying at the University of Nairobi, she was discovered by photographer Peter Beard, and persuaded to move to the United States in 1975 to take up a modeling career. Many of the top designers, including Versace, Calvin Klein and Yves Saint-Laurent, chose to use her as the focus point for their designs, and she spent over a decade as one of the most sought-after of high fashion models. She has gone on establish a cosmetics company to provide shades appropriate for women with a wide range of skin colors, and has produced a line of clothing inspired by her Somali childhood, as well as being involved in a number of charitable projects.

Donyale Lunawas the first African-American model to appear on the cover of 'Vogue', in 1966; Beverly Johnson was the first to appear on the cover of 'American Vogue', in 1974; Naomi Sims was the first to grace the cover of 'Ladies Home Journal', in 1968.
7. Although she is usually included as one of the supermodels of the 70s, this model actually changed to acting after only a few years of modeling, and is probably better known to most from such roles as Jacy Farrow in the 1971 film 'The Last Picture Show' or as Maddie Hayes in the television show 'Moonlighting', which originally aired on ABC 1985-1989. Which of these talented women also featured in an eponymous comedy that aired on CBS between 1995 and 1998?

Answer: Cybill Shepherd

At the age of 20, Cybill Shepherd abandoned her successful modeling career to pursue one as an actress, in which she has experienced considerable success. Players too young to remember the roles mentioned in the question may be more familiar with her more recent television work, especially her performance (2007-2009) as Phyllis Kroll in 'The L Word' and her appearances, starting in 2008, as Shawn's mother Madeleine in 'Psych'.

She won two Grammy Awards for Best Actress in a TV Series, Comedy/Musical for her portrayal of Maddie Hayes, in 1985 and 1986, and another for the lead role of 'Cybill' in 1995.
8. Jerry Hall, a leggy Texas beauty, moved to France using an insurance payout following a car accident, and was discovered by an agent while sunbathing in Saint Tropez, thereafter becoming one of the most prominent models of the late 70s. During this time she had a romantic relationship with Brian Ferry, and appeared on the cover of Roxy Music's album 'Siren' dressed as a mermaid. However, she subsequently broke up with Ferry, and began a long-term relationship with another musician. Which of these men is the father of her four children?

Answer: Mick Jagger

Hall and Jagger started seeing each other in 1977 while she was still engaged to Brian Ferry, and he was married to Bianca Jagger, and remained together for over 20 years. Jerry Hall's modeling career was primarily freelance rather than being associated with one specific designer or photographer, and she had a celebrity status to rival that of her partner.

Her acting career has included such highlights as Bovril commercials, and a 2005 reality series in which she was ostensibly trying to select one of twelve young men to be a toyboy.
9. Which supermodel had a role in five episodes of the US television series 'Friends', playing the part of Janine Lacroix, Joey's temporary roommate?

Answer: Elle Macpherson

Elle's character became Joey's first new roommate after Chandler moved in with Monica early in the sixth season of 'Friends'. Joey, of course, was totally smitten by her, and they started to get close until she revealed that she could not stand his friends. After five episodes, she moved out.

Elle Mcpherson's modeling career featured some spectacular achievements, including appearing in every issue of 'Elle' for six years, and appearing on the cover of the annual swimsuit issue of 'Sports Illustrated' five times between 1986 and 2006. In 1994 she set up her own company rather than working for an agency, and has expanded it beyond modeling and acting to include lingerie and beauty products. She has received a number of awards in recognition of her skills in the corporate sector.
10. Which of these models, associated with the so-called heroin chic look, has also been called an anti-supermodel?

Answer: Kate Moss

Calvin Klein featured a teenaged Kate Moss in a major campaign in 1993, emphasizing her angular body shape in contrast to the rounded girl-next-door healthy looks of the other supermodels of the time. There was a lot of criticism of the heroin chic look, both because it seemed to be glorifying the unhealthy lifestyle and resulting appearance of a drug addict (including emaciation and pale skin with large dark circles around the eyes) and because her slenderness was suggested to be the result of an eating disorder, providing a dangerous role model for young girls.
