Answer: Versace

Gianni Versace founded the fashion company which bears his name in 1978. His work shot into the public eye when Liz Hurley wore one of his designs to the premiere of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' (1994). The dress was held together by large safety pins and it generated much publicity for Versace and Hurley herself. Gianni Versace was murdered in Florida and Donatella became head of design for the company.

Their older brother, Santo, is also involved with the business and became one of the Chief Executive Officers after the death of Gianni.

Answer: Spice Girls

Victoria Adams, as she was then, was known as 'Posh Spice' and was one of the five original members of the Spice Girls. They had a great deal of success, with 'Wannabe' topping the charts around the world as their first hit in 1996. Victoria married English soccer star David Beckham in 1999 and the couple has maintained a high profile ever since. Victoria began her fashion range with sunglasses in 2006 and has followed up with denim jeans and perfumes.

She has now established herself as a fashion designer having shown her first collection in New York in 2008.

Answer: Hardy Amies

Hardy Amies established his business in 1946 from premises situated in Savile Row, which is known for its high class men's tailoring. Amies ensured his business provided clothes for women too, and built a reputation for his classic and tailored designs.

He began designing for Princess Elizabeth, as she then was, in 1950 and received a Royal Warrant in 1955 to confirm his status as her official dressmaker. Amies received a knighthood in 1989 in recognition of his long association with the monarch.

The other people are well known designers, but I'm guessing that Her Majesty has never worn a Vivienne Westwood design.

Answer: Spain

Manuel 'Manolo' Blahnik was born in the Canary Islands, which are situated off the coast of Africa but are part of Spain. He studied in Switzerland at the University of Geneva before moving to London, via Paris, in 1968 where he has remained ever since. Blahnik is one of the best known shoe designers in the fashion world, and his shoes have featured in television shows, including 'Sex and the City'.

Answer: Gabrielle

Gabrielle Chanel was born in 1883 and began her career as a seamstress before becoming a hat maker in Paris in 1909. She branched out into clothing in 1913 and established a reputation for the simplicity and elegance of her designs, notably with 'the little black dress'. Chanel also produced perfumes, with her Chanel No. 5 first being sold in 1922 and remaining popular into the twenty-first century. Coco Chanel died in 1971 but the company she established remains one of the leading names in the fashion industry, with German designer Karl Lagerfeld having been associated with the business since 1983.

Answer: Lady Diana Spencer

The Emanuels were chosen by Lady Diana to create her wedding gown for her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981. David and Elizabeth met while they were both studying fashion design at Harrow School of Art and they continued their studies as a married couple at the Royal College of Art. David and Elizabeth separated and divorced in the 1990s and have each continued in fashion design. Princess Anne's dress for her 1973 marriage to Mark Phillips was designed by Maureen Baker. Sarah Ferguson wore a design by Lindka Cierach for her wedding to Prince Andrew, Duke of York in 1986. Princess Margaret's dress design was by Norman Hartnell when she married Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960.

Treacy studied design in Dublin and London and his work making hats was developed as a sideline before becoming his main interest. He met Karl Lagerfeld, then chief designer at Chanel, in 1991 and designed hats for him over a ten year period. Treacy also designed hats for Alexander McQueen at Givenchy.

Many of the guests at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton wore hats designed by Treacy. This included the infamous hat, or fascinator, worn by Princess Beatrice so I'm not sure how much of a recommendation this is.

Answer: Christian Dior

The fashion house named for its creator was established in the late 1940s, with its first collection being launched in 1947. The designs were given the name of the 'New Look' by the editor of the fashion magazine 'Harper's Bazaar'. The clothes used much more material than had previously been available, and reflected the return to prosperity following the end of World War II in 1945. Dior himself died at the relatively young age of fifty-two, in 1957, but his company continued with designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano taking up the reins.

The other options are all the founders of fashion houses in France.

Answer: Stella

Stella studied fashion during the 1990s and was able to enlist the services of the likes of Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss to model at her graduation show, due to her family connections. She was appointed by Chloé to the dismay of previous incumbent Karl Lagerfeld, who felt Stella had been appointed purely because of her famous name. Stella has made a success of her chosen career and has always been adamant that she has proved herself through her own abilities, not because of her father.

Answer: Red

Christian began his fashion career working for Roger Vivier, often credited with creating the first stiletto heels. Louboutin then worked as a freelance before setting up his own company in 1991. He has gone on to establish a large celebrity following, beginning with Princess Caroline of Monaco and including Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow. Louboutin has established a chain of boutiques selling his designs with shops around the globe.

Although he has failed in attempts to trademark his red soles, the design is widely recognised as his in the shoe market and by those dedicated followers of fashion.
