Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Mel Blanc (1908-1989) was a very accomplished voice actor who worked in radio, film, and television for over 60 years. He started his career in the 1930s voicing cartoon short movies for Warner Bros. His characters are almost too numerous to list, but I have tried to include the ones that children in the 1960s and 1970s would recognize. Besides these, he also voiced Mr. Magoo, Hardy Har Har (in "Lippy the Lion"), the cuckoo clock in "The Munsters", the engine on the Monkeemobile on "The Monkees", the Tasmanian Devil, Marvin the Martian, Captain Caveman, Heathcliff, and many others.
When he started his career, he did voice work for various cartoon studios including Disney, Screen Gems, MGM, and Universal. In 1941, he signed an exclusive contract with Warner Bros. studios. This is where he did his work in cartoons produced by Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. Many of the voices mentioned here were created at that time. When his exclusive contract with Warner Bros. ended in 1960, Blanc used the freedom to begin work with other companies. He continued to work with Warner Bros., but also worked with Hanna-Barbera, Sib Tower 12 (later MGM Animation/Visual Arts), and some commercial ventures. At this point, he became the voice of Barney Rubble and Dino the Dinosaur on the "Flintstones", and Cosmo Spacely, George Jetson's boss on "The Jetsons". He was also the first voice of Toucan Sam on the Froot Loops commercials, and the Frito Bandito on the somewhat controversial commercials for Fritos corn chips.
