Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Superman: The Movie (1978)

Answer: Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman (born 1930) portrayed Lex Luthor in "Superman: The Movie" as well as "Superman II" (1980) and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" (1987). In the movie series, Luthor attempts a variety of schemes from launching two nuclear missiles in different directions at the same time to creating a solar-powered clone of Superman.

In "Superman II" and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace", Hackman sports his own head of hair as Luthor. In "Superman: The Movie", a variety of hats and disguises suggest that Luthor is bald although he is only shown as bald in one brief scene near the end of the movie. Gene Hackman is a respected movie actor known for films, including "The French Connection" (1971).
2. Atom Man vs. Superman (1950 film serial)

Answer: Lyle Talbot

Lyle Talbot's Lex Luthor was known as Atom Man in many of the serial episodes. Atom Man/Luthor constructed various devices such as a disintegrating machine while disguising himself as a television repairman. Both Lyle Talbot and Kirk Alyn, the actor who portrayed Superman, shared a common interest in cooking and enjoyed exchanging recipes off-screen.

This would be the last live-action version of Lex Luthor until "Superman: The Movie" (1978) as the character made no appearances in George Reeves's "Superman" television show (1952-1958). Lyle Talbot (1902-1996) was a film and television actor known for his supporting role in "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet".
3. Superman Returns (2006 film)

Answer: Kevin Spacey

"Superman Returns" was seen as a sequel of sorts to "Superman: The Movie" and "Superman II". Kevin Spacey's Luthor shares some personality traits with Gnee Hackman's interpretation, but is generally darker and more serious. Lex Luthor is attempting to create a new continent in the ocean that will cause havoc in the world. Kevin Spacey (born 1959) is a stage, film, and television actor known for roles in films like "American Beauty" (1999) and "L. A. Confidential" (1997).
4. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016 film)

Answer: Jesse Eisenberg

In "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice", Lex Luthor splices his DNA with that of General Zod to create a monster called Doomsday that is intended to destroy Superman. In the movie, Jesse Eisenberg's Luthor seems to genuinely feel that Superman is an evil figure.

This does not stop Lex Luthor from committing plenty of evil acts on his own. Jesse Eisenberg (born 1983) is a film actor known for roles in "Adventureland" (2007) and "The Social Network" (2010).
5. Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997 television show)

Answer: John Shea

In "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman", John Shea appeared as Lex Luthor most often in the first season, though mentions made him a continuing presence in the show. He is not limited to using Kryptonite to further his aims. In one scheme, he tries to trick Lois Lane into marrying him.

In another, he used cloning technology. John Shea (born 1949) is an American stage, film, and television actor
6. Smallville (2001-2011 television show)

Answer: Michael Rosenbaum

In this take on the character, Lex Luthor and Clark Kent are friendly with each other in early seasons of "Smallville". Lionel Luthor, Lex's father, is a recurring character in this show and their interactions help to shape the future super villain. Michael Rosenbaum (born 1972) is an American film and television actor.

Fun Fact: Michael Rosenbaum voiced the Flash in the animated series "Justice League"/"Justice League: Unlimited". In one episode, the minds of the Flash and Lex Luthor switch bodies. In this episode, Michael Rosenbaum gets to voice the Flash in Lex Luthor's body.
7. Superboy (1988-1992 television series)

Answer: Sherman Howard

Sherman Howard appeared as Lex Luthor in seasons 2-4 of "Superboy" while Scott James Wells portrayed him in the first season. Re-enacting a scene from the comic books, while rescuing Lex from a chemical fire in his laboratory, Superboy accidentally causes Lex to go bald. Sherman Howard (born 1949) is an American actor with extensive credits on the stage, and in film and television.
8. Super Friends (1978-1986 television series)

Answer: Stanley Jones

While Lex Luthor was a series regular in the "Challenge of the Superfriends" season (1978), he was a recurring character in several other seasons. Lex served as the head of the "Legion of Doom". He was the most frequently appearing villain in the "Super Friends" universe. Stanley Jones (1928-1998) was a Canadian film and television actor who focused mostly on voice work.
9. Superman: The Animated Series (1996-2000 television series)

Answer: Clancy Brown

Clancy Brown would also voice Lex Luthor in the "Justice League"/"Justice League Unlimited" series. This series emphasized Luthor the millionaire businessman more than Luthor the genius scientist. Though Luthor attempts and fails at many schemes during the run of "Superman: The Animated Series", there is never enough evidence to send him to prison. Clancy Brown (born 1959) is an American film and television actor whose roles include Mr. Krabs in "SpongeBob SquarePants".
10. DC Universe Online (2011 video game)

Answer: James Marsters

DC Universe Online is a free multiplayer online video game. In this game, Luthor first attacks the super heroes and then is forced to work with them to prevent a takeover of Earth by Brainiac. James Marsters (born 1962) is an American actor and musician. He is best known for playing the role of "Spike" in the television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel".
