Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Another weird cartoon character among many weird cartoon characters was Marvin the Martian. He only got that name after a few decades of performing. What was he known as originally?

Answer: Commander X-2

Marvin the Martian first appeared in the cartoon "Haredevil Hare" (1948) with his dog K-9 and Bugs Bunny. Marvin was only known then as Commander X-2.

In "Haredevil Hare" Bugs Bunny reluctantly at first, becomes the first rabbit in space. He lands on the moon only to find Marvin the Martian (then known as Commander X-2) and his dog K-9. Marvin is on the first Mars mission to the moon and is there to blow up the Earth because it blocks his view of Venus. His weapons of choice are the Illudium PU-36 Explosive Space Modulator and the ACME Disintegration Pistol.

2. One of my favourite cartoon characters is a very ordinary Englishman who swaps his suit and bowler hat for some exotic garb every episode. He then walks through a magic door and begins an exciting adventure. What's this character, and the cartoon, called?

Answer: Mr. Benn

Mr. Benn lives at 52 Festive Road, which is based on Festing Road in Putney, London, UK. Mr. Benn's creator David McKee lived there. McKee has said, "It's an ordinary street, the right street for an ordinary man who has extraordinary adventures."

Mr. Benn originally appeared in books which were then adapted for TV by the BBC. The TV episodes were originally shown in 1971 and 1972 and have been repeated umpteen times. Newer episodes have been made.

Mr. Benn's adventures always start at the fancy-dress shop where the moustached fez-wearing shop keeper kits out our hero. He then steps through a magic door into an adventure fitting for his attire. He always brings back a souvenir too, so we know it is all real and not just a dream or hallucination.

I love Mr. Benn because he's so understated and mild-mannered. He seems like a very sensible, conservative, boring bloke but he's actually up for anything.

All the red herrings are "Mr Men" characters.

3. One of my favourite cartoon characters is Barney Rubble from "The Flintstones". On which other fictional character was Barney Rubble based?

Answer: Ed Norton - "The Honeymooners"

Barney Rubble was based on "The Honeymooners" character Ed Norton, played by Art Carney. Barney and Fred Flintstone have a relationship similar to that of Ed Norton and Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) in "The Honeymooners". Barney usually went along with Fred's hair-brained schemes because he was Fred's best friend. Mel Blanc voiced Barney Rubble until his death in 1989, after which the character was voiced by several other voice actors.

"The Flintstones" was produced by Hanna-Barbera. Their production company was originally formed in 1957 by animation directors William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and director George Sydney. It went on to produce many famous cartoons over four decades such as Yogi Bear, Scooby-Doo, Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, Wally Gator, and Magilla Gorilla, to name just a few.

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera have won at least eight Grammys, a Golden Globe Award and they have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

4. What tall, thin cartoon character rarely spoke and was named after a famous movie that starred Peter Sellers?

Answer: Pink Panther

The Pink Panther character was first introduced in the opening credits of the 1963 live action movie "The Pink Panther". Henry Mancini composed "The Pink Panther Theme" for the movie which starred David Niven as Sir Charles Lytton, Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau, and Robert Wagner as George Lytton. The movie was directed by Blake Edwards.

The music was later used in the animated 1969 TV series "The Pink Panther Show" starring the Pink Panther and also featuring a character called "The Inspector". The inspector (based on the Peter Sellers character Inspector Clouseau), was a French detective. He had a side kick who was a Spanish gendarme named Deux-Deux.

These cartoons were a "must see" in my childhood Saturday morning routine.

5. One of my favorite cartoon duos are Rocky, the flying squirrel, and his best friend, Bullwinkle J. Moose. What is the name of the Minnesota town where they live?

Answer: Frostbite Falls

Originally aired as "Rocky & His Friends" in 1959, the show was created by Jay Ward Productions. After the first two seasons it became "The Bullwinkle Show" but was cancelled in 1964. The narrator for the show was the movie and TV actor William Conrad who was listed in the credits as Bill Conrad. He would later become a TV star himself as the eponymous P. I. "Cannon" which ran from 1971 to 1976.

The show was known for it's many puns and wry humour. Example: Rocky: "Do you know what an A-bomb is?", Bullwinkle: "Certainly, A bomb is what some people call our show!" Rocky (voiced by June Foray) was the brave one of the duo. Bullwinkle (voiced by Bill Scott) was a bit more timid but would go anywhere Rocky went. They were always being tricked by their arch enemies, Boris Badenov (voiced by Paul Frees) and Natasha Fatale (voiced by June Foray), who were bumbling spies from the country of Pottsylvania.

The show also included the segments, "Mr. Know-It-All" (Bullwinkle) and "Bullwinkle's Corner". "Mr. Know-It-All" gave a short lecture about different things which he didn't really know about and always ended up getting hurt. In "Bullwinkle's Corner", Bullwinkle read a poem or a nursery rhyme, again having it go badly for him!

Other segments in the show were "Fractured Fairy Tales", funny re-enactments of fairy tales narrated by veteran actor Edward Everett Horton, and "Aesop and Son", similar to "Fractured Fairy Tales" but with Aesop's Fables instead. Also included were "Peabody's Improbable History" and "Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties".

The show was popular with both children and adults, although it never received high ratings. It was moved from time slot to time slot eventually even moving networks from ABC to NBC. It's still being re-run and is now available on DVD.

6. One of my favourite cartoon characters is the captain of a pirate ship called The Black Pig. His nemesis is Cut-Throat Jake who captains The Flying Dustman. What's the name of the cartoon?

Answer: Captain Pugwash

Captain Horatio Pugwash is the rather hapless captain of The Black Pig, and he lends his name to the show.

A Scot called John Ryan originally devised "Captain Pugwash" as a comic strip. He was asked to adapt it for television in 1957. Incredibly, these early episodes were done in real-time using cardboard cut-out figures, levers and string, much more like a traditional puppet show than the usual animated cartoon.

The first series ran for about a year. "Captain Pugwash" was back in 1974 for another year, and this is the version I grew up watching. In 1997, he was back again. The third version was made digitally and just doesn't work for fans of the old cardboard cut-outs.

John Ryan won several court cases when an urban myth surrounding "Captain Pugwash" came into the mainstream. The myth was that several characters' names on the show were lewd allusions, and two prominent British newspapers fell into the trap of taking it for granted that somebody had actually done their homework. The myth had arisen in the 1980s prior to the age of easy access to old TV shows via the internet.

7. I've always enjoyed the animated cartoons of "Popeye the Sailor" but my favorite character is Popeye's father Poopdeck Pappy. Pappy was first introduced in the cartoon "Goonland". What was Pappy's reaction when he met his grown son Popeye for the first time in forty years?

Answer: "I don't like relatives!"

"Goonland" was released in 1938, it was the first animated appearance of Poopdeck Pappy but not the last. Animator, storyman and voice actor Jack Mercer (1910-1984) did the voices of both Popeye and Poopdeck Pappy. He was also the voice of Felix the Cat.

Pappy disappeared shortly after Popeye was born and wasn't seen again for 40 years. It's never revealed how Popeye knew Pappy was a prisoner on Goon Island but Popeye is determined to rescue him.

Pappy is not happy to see Popeye at first. He's pretty rude to him, (Pappy: "Whatcha' want me to do, kiss ya?"). However, he changes his mind after Popeye gets into trouble with the Goons. Popeye tries to eat his spinach but one of the Goons knocks it away and it rolls to Pappy's prison cell window. Pappy eats the spinach and saves Popeye, then the two return to civilization, where Pappy gives Popeye a lot more problems!

8. My favourite cartoon character Krtek the Mole was created by Zdenek Miler in 1956. Which European country was Zdenek Miler from?

Answer: Czechoslovakia

Zdenek Miler was born in 1921 in the then country of Czechoslovakia. His creation Krtek (pronounced Kir-teck) has been popular in China, Europe, India, Japan and Russia.

In 2011 a hand puppet version of Krtek went into space with astronaut Andrew Feustel aboard the last mission of the space shuttle Endeavour.

Zdenek Miler thought of the mole character when out walking and stumbling over a mole hole. The first episode "How the mole got his trousers" was narrated. In subsequent episodes Zdenek Miler used his two daughters voices in short exclamations so that the cartoon mole could be understood by children everywhere.

9. One of my all-time favourite cartoon characters is Wile E. Coyote and his never ending quest to catch and eat the Road Runner. In the cartoons they both have humorous pseudo Latin names. What is the real Latin name of the Road Runner?

Answer: Geococcyx californianus

Geococcyx californianus (which means Californian earth-cuckoo) is the Latin name of the Greater roadrunner, on which the cartoon Road Runner is based. It is also known by the names chaparral cock, ground cuckoo, and snake killer. To kill larger snakes it joins with another roadrunner in a joint attack. I have no idea how they then divide up the spoils. A real coyote can in fact run faster than a real roadrunner.

The cartoon characters Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner were created by animation director Chuck Jones and storyboard artist/screenwriter Michael Maltese in 1948. Their pseudo Latin names in the first cartoon "Fast and Furry-ous" (1949) were Carnivorous vulgaris and Acceleratii incredibus. These names and the spelling of the names changed over the years.

Wile E. Coyote was silent from 1949 to 1952 then was voiced by the King of voice artists Mel Blanc. The Road Runner was voiced by cartoon background artist Paul Julian but he did not get credit for it. The "Beep Beep" sound came from him imitating the sound of a car horn as a humorous way to get people out of the way of his car. He then recorded more than one version of it. An editor used the recordings, sometimes sped up and sometimes on a loop for the Road Runner's voice.

10. When I was a child, one of my favourite cartoon characters was "Mighty Mouse" from the Terrytoons Studios. At the movies on a Saturday afternoon we all looked forward to another Mighty Mouse cartoon adventure. However, for his first seven films, he was known by another name. What was it?

Answer: Super Mouse

The character Super Mouse first appeared in an animated theatrical short "The Mouse of Tomorrow" in 1942. He was created as a parody of Superman. However, in 1944 the character's name was changed to "Mighty Mouse" because there was another cartoon character appearing in comic books with the name "Super Mouse". Mighty Mouse had super powers. He could fly, had super strength and x-ray vision. He could also turn back time and move inanimate objects with his mind.

Several "Mighty Mouse" cartoons had opera-like music and dialogue and many of these featured the characters Pearl Pureheart (the heroine) and Oilcan Harry (the villain), who along with Mighty Mouse (the hero, of course), sang their lines. Mighty Mouse was a tenor, Pearl a soprano and Harry was a bass-baritone. When flying into action Mighty Mouse often sang "Here I come to save the day!".
