Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the leader of the elephants in the Disney version of "The Jungle Book"?

Answer: Colonel Hathi

In Kipling's classic book the elephant leader is simply called "Hathi", but Disney gave him a rank and a passion for marching. Hathi simply means elephant in both Hindi and Sanskrit.
2. Those of us of a certain age remember Mickey Dolenz in the television series "Circus Boy". What was the name of the baby elephant that he cared for?

Answer: Bimbo

The character played by Dolenz was "Corky" and he was Bimbo's water boy and best friend, often pictured riding on his back and doing such jobs as washing him and brushing his teeth. Unfortunately I am unable to find any information on what became of Bimbo, but hopefully he grew up and lived happily ever after.
3. Who was the son of "Mrs Jumbo" who learned to fly with the help of a 'magic' feather?

Answer: Dumbo

After accidentally getting drunk, Dumbo and his friend Timothy the mouse wake up in a tree with no idea how they got there. Timothy decides that Dumbo must have flown and, with help from a group of crows, convinces him that a 'magical' crow feather will give him the power of flight and get them back to the ground.
The film was made on a tight budget in an attempt to recoup the losses of "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia".
4. Which elephant in the books by Jean De Brunhoff fled the jungle to live in a French city before returning to become "King of the Elephants"?

Answer: Babar

Babar is asked to become king by the Council of Elephants because of his fancy education, he then marries his beloved Celeste and builds the city of "Celesteville". The animated series based on the books concentrates on Babar and Celeste's later lives with their children.
5. Which of the four "Banana Splits" characters was the elephant?

Answer: Snorky

"The Banana Splits Adventure Hour" was the first time Hanna-Barbera mixed live action with animation, there were two separate versions made one to be shown in the U.S. and one for the U.K. Snorky was the drummer in the "Banana Splits" band.
6. According to the Jim Carrey movie which elephant is "------ Hears a Who"?

Answer: Horton

Based on the book by Dr Seuss, "Horton Hears a Who" tells of Horton's efforts to move the tiny city of Who-ville to a place of safety while carrying it on top of a piece of clover. This was the third adaptation of a Dr Seuss book, he also wrote "Horton Hatches the Egg".
7. In "The Simpsons" what was the name of the elephant that Bart won in a radio competition?

Answer: Stampy

When given the choice between $10,000 and an elephant, after winning a radio phone-in contest, Bart naturally chose the elephant, unfortunately they hadn't prepared for that eventuality and finding an elephant caused a bit of a scramble. Homer wasn't impressed by the cost of keeping an elephant.
8. In the "Rupert Bear" cartoon strip, what was the name of his elephant friend?

Answer: Edward Trunk

The "Rupert Bear" cartoon strip started in 1920 and Edward was there from the beginning. He also accompanied Rupert in Paul McCartney's 1984 animation "Rupert and the Frog Song".
9. Who was the cartoon elephant who changed colour when he/she broke a fountain pen while playing with it in the bath?

Answer: Little Blue

This lovely little animation was first shown in 1976, but sadly seems to have virtually disappeared from record. It mainly centered on being different and getting along with other people.
10. Which elephant "packed her trunk and said goodbye to the circus"?

Answer: Nellie

The song "Nellie the Elephant" was written by Ralph Butler and Peter Hart and first released in 1956 by Mandy Miller. There have since been several remakes including one by The Toy Dolls which was a 1984 Christmas hit in the U.K.
There was a cartoon series based on the song, produced between 1989 and 1981 but it was not very successful.
