Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Jaws' is the quintessential shark movie, featuring a great white shark which terrorises local swimmers. It is eventually killed by Martin Brody, a policeman. Who plays him?

Answer: Roy Scheider

'Sharks', the Space song after which this quiz is named, features the line 'I think I'm in 'Jaws' with Roy Scheider'. Scheider plays Chief Martin Brody, the hero of both the original film and the sequel 'Jaws 2'. He kills the shark in 'Jaws' by blowing it up with a pressurised scuba tank, which he shoots with a rifle. Richard Dreyfuss plays Matt Hooper, a marine biologist who is able to determine that a great white shark caused the death of a young female swimmer. Robert Shaw plays Quint, a shark hunter and war veteran who becomes obsessed with killing the shark and owns the Orca (the 'bigger boat').

He ends up being eaten by the shark. Peter Benchley, who wrote the novel on which the film was based, has a cameo as a reporter.
2. Which children's cartoon was set in the fictional underwater city of Seacago, and featured a shark detective and his partner?

Answer: Sharky & George

'Sharky and George, the crimebusters of the sea / Sharky and George clear up any mystery.' Sharky, as his name suggests, is a shark - a pink shark who wears a fedora - and George, his little partner and the brains of the duo, is a small blue and yellow fish, species unknown.

The two of them run a detective agency and fight criminals such as Dr Medusa, a mad scientist jellyfish, and Colonel Klaw, a German lobster who leads a crab army. They also use seahorses as transport. The series was originally French, but an English version was shown on Channel 4 during the '90s.
3. Kisame Hoshigaki is an evil shark-like humanoid with blue skin and a massive sword, the Samehada, which consumes energy (or 'chakra'). He is a member of a gang called Akatsuki. In which manga does he appear?

Answer: Naruto

Kisame would have fitted in well with the cast of 'One Piece', as some of the characters are humanoid 'fishmen', but he's actually a member of Akatsuki, a gang of ex-ninja gone rogue who are the main villains of the second part of 'Naruto'. Akatsuki are divided into partnerships, and Kisame's partner is Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke's older brother. Kisame comes from the Village Hidden in the Mist and is the wielder of Samehada, a sentient sword and one of the seven legendary swords wielded by the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist.

He has the ability to manipulate water and summon sharks, and becomes more shark-like in appearance when he fuses with his sword. ('Same' is the Japanese word for 'shark'.)
4. Not all sharks in fiction are evil! Jabberjaw, Hanna-Barbera's shark character, was a heroic shark who played drums for the Neptunes, an underwater pop group. Who voiced him?

Answer: Frank Welker

Frank Welker is one of Hanna-Barbera's most notable voice actors; his most famous role is Scooby Doo (and Fred in the same series). He played Jabberjaw, a great white shark who lived in an underwater world set in 2076 ('Jabberjaw' came out during the '70s, riding on the back of 'Jaws'), and based his voice on Curly Howard of the Three Stooges. Jabberjaw is the drummer with the Neptunes, who also feature Biff on vocals and guitar, Clamhead on bass, Shelly on percussion and Bubbles on keyboard. His catchphrase, based on a catchphrase of comedian Rodney Dangerfield, is 'I don't get no respect!' He is often kicked out of buildings that do not admit sharks.

He also has the ability to shapeshift.
5. What is the name of the great white shark in 'Finding Nemo'? (Hint: he's Australian.)

Answer: Bruce

Bruce looks terrifying, but is actually a member of a group for 'fish-friendly sharks', whose motto is 'fish are friends, not food'. They refuse to eat fish and are expected to befriend them instead, and the group also includes a hammerhead shark called Anchor and a mako shark called Chum.

Unfortunately, Bruce's instincts kick in when Marlin and Dory have a fight and Dory gets a nosebleed, and the smell of blood triggers his carnivore side. Dory almost kills him by making him eat a torpedo, but he spits it out and it hits a mine, and he reverts to normal (and is later seen hanging out with Dory).

He gets his name from the shark models used in 'Jaws', and the name 'Bruce' is also a stereotypical name for Australian men (see the Monty Python sketch about a gang of cork hat-wearing Aussies who are all called Bruce).

He is voiced by comedian Barry Humphries, the man behind Dame Edna Everage.
6. Which Syfy disaster movie series features sharks being dropped on various cities by waterspouts?

Answer: Sharknado

Six 'Sharknado' films were made over a period between 2013 and 2018, and include titles like 'Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!' and 'Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens'. It's safe to say the franchise doesn't take itself too seriously! A 'sharknado' is a tornado which picks sharks up and drops them in various places, causing chaos. Ian Ziering - formerly of 'Beverly Hills 90210' fame - and Tara Reid play the recurring characters Fin Shepard and April Wexler, who travel around the world battling sharks and - in a couple of cases - even go back in time. Various celebrities have cameoed throughout the series, including drag queen Alaska as Morgan le Fay, Neil Degrasse Tyson as Merlin, Perez Hilton as a passenger, wrestler Kurt Angle as a fireman, Ann Coulter as the Vice President of the USA, and Slipknot singer Corey Taylor as a security guard. 'Sharknado 5' also features the tagline 'Make America bait again'.
7. Who plays the vegetarian shark Lenny in the DreamWorks movie 'Shark Tale'?

Answer: Jack Black

'Shark Tale' stars Will Smith as Oscar, a bluestreak cleaner wrasse who works at a Whale Wash (like a carwash, but with whales), and gets into trouble with his puffer fish boss Sykes (Martin Scorsese) over a debt. At a seahorse race, he bets all his money and loses, and has a run-in with Frankie (Michael Imperioli), a great white shark, who is killed when an anchor falls on his head. Oscar is credited with killing Frankie and becomes a celebrity, and also befriends Frankie's brother Lenny (Jack Black), who is a vegetarian, much to his father's disgust. Ernie and Bernie, Don Lino's jellyfish enforcers, try to make Lenny eat Oscar, but Lenny spares his life, and eventually reconciles with his father.

The film also features Renee Zellweger as Angie, an angelfish and Oscar's girlfriend, and Angelina Jolie as Lola, a lionfish and gold digger.

The soundtrack features a cover of 'Car Wash' by Christina Aguilera (who appears as a jellyfish in the video).
8. Which animated TV series featured a crime-fighting gang of human-shark hybrids called Ripster, Jab, Streex and Big Slammu?

Answer: Street Sharks

Capitalising on the trend for humanoid animal gangs started by 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles', 'Street Sharks' was about the Bolton brothers, four teenage boys who were transformed into humanoid sharks by a machine called the 'gene slammer', which combines the DNA of humans and marine animals.

Their father, Professor Bolton, was transformed into a monster by the machine and never appears on screen. Ripster is John Bolton, the oldest brother and the leader of the group, who turns into a great white shark hybrid. Clint Bolton, a lazy boxer, becomes Jab, a scalloped hammerhead shark hybrid; Bobby Bolton, a rollerblading drummer, becomes Streex, a tiger shark hybrid; and Coop Bolton, the baby of the four, becomes Big Slammu, a whale shark hybrid.

The brothers' arch-nemesis is Professor Paradigm, their father's former partner and a piranha hybrid.
9. 'Haifisch' is German for 'shark'. Which German metal band released the song 'Haifisch' in 2009?

Answer: Rammstein

Rammstein's website featured the following quote before the video was premiered: "The shark not only has teeth - he's got tears as well. But since it lives in the briny deep, no one sees them. A shame. After all, this cartilaginous fish is one of the oldest of the world's many misunderstood creatures.

A bit more sympathy couldn't hurt!" The chorus of the song was inspired by 'Mack the Knife', and runs as follows: 'Und der Haifisch, der hat Träne/Und die laufen vom Gesicht/Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser/So die Träne sieht man nicht' (translation: 'and the shark has tears/And they run down its face/But the shark lives in water/So no-one sees the tears').

The video, sadly, does not feature any sharks until right at the end. It's set at singer Till Lindemann's funeral, and shows each of the band members murdering him (there's even a scene based on 'Seven', involving keyboard player Christian Lorenz force-feeding Lindemann on spaghetti!) At the end, Lindemann is revealed to be alive and on holiday, having caught a tiger shark.
10. Which song about sharks, popular with young children, became an internet meme in 2016?

Answer: Baby Shark

'Baby Shark' reportedly started out as a campfire song, and it first became popular when a German version called 'Kleiner Hai' ('little shark') by Alemuel appeared on Youtube in 2006, leading to the song's popularity among German children. However, the version that gave the song internet meme status was a 2015 Korean animated video by the children's educational entertainment company Pinkfong, which featured a whole family of sharks and children doing the actions.

The video went viral in 2016 in Asia, and soon spread across the world. Ellen DeGeneres and James Corden performed it on their respective TV shows, and it even featured on 'RuPaul's Drag Race'!
