Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Benedict Cumberbatch

Answer: Basil Rathbone

Both of these actors have played the part of Sherlock Holmes, legendary detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Basil Rathbone not only starred in numerous films as Holmes, but also played the role on radio, on stage, and a TV episode.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the BBC's lead in the series "Sherlock". He was cast after the creators of "Sherlock" saw Cumberbatch's performance in the 2007 movie "Atonement".
2. Christopher Reeve

Answer: George Reeves

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman!

George Reeves starred in the film "Superman and the Mole Men", as well as the TV series "Adventures of Superman".

Christopher Reeve starred in four "Superman" films. When the third film was a box office failure, Reeve had to be coaxed into doing the fourth film by being offered story input as well as financing for a pet project. After the fourth film also turned out to be a box office failure, plans for a fifth movie were scrapped.
3. William Shatner

Answer: Chris Pine

Shatner and Pine both played the role of Captain James Tiberius Kirk in the "Star Trek" franchise.

William Shatner has had a long and illustrious career, but is probably best known as the original Kirk in Gene Rodenberry's TV series "Star Trek". He also played Kirk in six Star Trek movies, and was the voice of Kirk in "Star Trek: The Animated Series". Shatner also voiced Kirk in multiple video games. Born in Montreal, Canada, he speaks English and French fluently.

Chris Pine first played the role of Kirk in the movie "Star Trek" (2009), and again in "Star Trek Beyond" (2016). He has also voiced the part of Kirk in a video game. Coincidentally, Chris's father, Robert Pine, was in "Incident on a Dark Street" with William Shatner.
4. Adam West

Answer: Christian Bale

West and Bale have both portrayed Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Adam West has played the role of Batman in many shows, beginning with the campy TV series "Batman" (1966-1968). Upon his death in 2017, the bat-signal was shone on City Hall in Los Angeles, and on the Whitman Tower in Walla Walla, Washington - West's home town.

Bale first played the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in the movie "Batman Begins" (2005), and voiced the part in the video game of the same name. He then went on to play Batman in "The Dark Knight" (2008) and "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012). Born in Wales, he is the first non-American to play the part of Batman.
5. Alan Alda

Answer: Donald Sutherland

Both Alda and Sutherland played the role of Captain Benjamin Franklin 'Hawkeye' Pierce in "M*A*S*H"; Alda in the TV series, and Sutherland in the movie.

Alda almost turned down the part of Hawkeye because he didn't like the humorous approach to the Korean War. He insisted that at least one scene in each episode take place in the operating theater during surgery. It was written into his contract and he signed on six hours before the pilot began filming. At the time, he and his family were living in New Jersey; Alda commuted to the set in Los Angeles every weekend for eleven years so as not to uproot his family. Alda was the only cast member to appear in every episode.

Sutherland's incredible career includes roles in "The Dirty Dozen", "Kelly's Heroes", and "Citizen X" (for which he won an Emmy Award). In addition to Hawkeye, Sutherland and Alda shared another role; they both played Flan in "Six Degrees of Separation". Sutherland played the role in the movie, and Alda voiced the part for the audiobook. They both also suffered from polio as children
6. Sean Connery

Answer: Roger Moore

Bond. James Bond.

From 1962 to 1983, Sean Connery appeared in seven Bond films. One of the jobs Connery had prior to acting was as a milkman. When working as a milkman, one of his customers was the Fettes School in Edinburgh, which also happened to be the school James Bond attended in Fleming's novels (after being kicked out of Eton).

Roger Moore succeeded Connery in the part of 007, and also starred in seven Bond films. His role in "Live and Let Die" was originally offered to Patrick McGoohan, as was the role of Simon Templar in "The Saint". Ironically, Moore had a phobia about guns, and wound up ruining countless takes during the filming of the Bond movies. He officially retired from acting in 2009.
7. Gary Oldman

Answer: Bela Lugosi

Dracula is the shared role for Gary Oldman and Bela Lugosi.

Oldman played Dracula once, in "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992). Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the star-studded cast included Wynona Ryder as Dracula's love interest, Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing, and Keanu Reaves. Born in London, Oldman auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He was not only turned away, but told to find a different career path. Ignoring their advice, Oldman's career flourished and included roles in the Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Batman franchises.

Bela Lugosi first played the role of Dracula on Broadway in 1927, before he'd even learned to speak English (he spoke Hungarian). He learned the lines phonetically and the play was wildly successful, running for three years. In 1931 Tod Browning filmed the play, creating the movie "Dracula". Sadly that was the pinnacle of Lugosi's career. He made poor choices in the parts he accepted, and finally wound up working with Ed Wood, 'Worst Director of All Time'.
8. Anthony Perkins

Answer: Freddie Highmore

Perkins and Highmore both played the man with the major mommy issues - Norman Bates.

Perkins, the star of Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" (1960), reprised the role in "Psycho II" (1983), "Psycho III" (1986), and made-for-TV movie "Psycho IV: The Beginning" (1990). Multitalented, Perkins received two Tony nominations for his work on stage, and had a Billboard Hot 100 hit single in 1957. Perkins died in 1992 from AIDS related complications. His widow, Berry Berenson, died nine years later, victim of the 9/11/01 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Freddie Highmore starred in the TV series "Bates Motel" (2013-2017). The series is essentially a prequel to the movie and focuses on Norman's teenage years, beginning with him and his (living) mother moving into the infamous motel. Born in 1992, Highmore began acting at age 7 and has worked alongside Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet ("Finding Neverland"), Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"), and Robin Williams ("August Rush").
9. Dick York

Answer: Dick Sargent

Both actors played the part of Darrin Stephens in the TV series "Bewitched" (1964-1972). Dick York was the original Darrin, but had to give up the role due to a debilitating back injury. Dick Sargent replaced York, and no explanation was offered on the show.

Darrin Stephens wasn't the only part to be played by two different actors in the show. Louise Tate, Gladys Kravitz, and Darrin's father also had two different actors in the roles.
10. John Astin

Answer: Raul Julia

The Addams family started, when Uncle Fester...well you know the rest.

"The Addams Family" TV show ran from 1964-1966 and starred John Astin as Gomez Addams. Originally offered the part of Lurch, the butler, Astin was about to turn the part down until he got a call with an offer to play Gomez.

Raul Julia played Gomez in "The Addams Family" (1991) movie, co-starring Anjelica Huston as Gomez's wife, Morticia. The pair reprised their roles in "Addams Family Values" (1993). Julia was nominated for four Tony Awards, and he was posthumously awarded an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award, both for "The Burning Season" (1994).
