Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In a game of Five Card Draw with no wilds, which of these hands would win after the draw?

Answer: AhKhQhJhTh

The AhKhQhJhTh is a Royal Flush and the highest possible hand in most forms of poker. The AsKsQdJsTs is called Broadway and is the highest straight possible but the AhKhQhJhTh is both a straight and a flush. Here is how the hands rank:
AhKhQhJhTh - Royal Flush
8s8d8h8c2c - Four of a Kind
TcTd7d7s7h - Full House
AsKsQdJsTs - Ace High Straight
2. In a game of Texas Hold'em where the board reads AhThQs2d4c, which of these hands would win?

Answer: KhJd

The KhJd gives the player Broadway or an Ace High Straight and would be the winning hand. Here is how the hands rank:
KhJd forms AhKhQsJdTh - Broadway or the highest Straight possible
3s5d forms Ah2d3s4c5d - the Wheel or the lowest Straight possible
QhQc forms QsQhQcAhTh - Three of a Kind
AsQd forms AsAhQsQdTh - Two Pair
3. In a game of Razz, which of these hands would win? (Remember Razz uses different hand rankings than most poker games.)

Answer: As2s5s4s3s

In Razz you are looking for the lowest hand possible which is a hand of A2345 or Wheel regardless of the suits of the cards because flushes and straights do not count in Razz. In Razz the Ace plays low not high. In this case the As2s5s4s3s is a Wheel and the best possible hand even though it is also a flush. The hands would rank like this:
As2s5s4s3s reads as A2345
Ad4h6c3c2h reads as A2346
Ac4d8c6h2c reads as A2468
2dKhJs3d4c reads as 234JK
4. In a game of Omaha with the board reading AhQd3sKhJh, which of these hands would win?

Answer: 2h2d8h8c

Omaha plays much like Texas Hold'em only each player is dealt four cards and must use two of them with three cards from the board to form the best hand possible. You cannot use more than two from your pocket. Here are the hands and the best hands they can form in order of rank: (bracketed cards are hole cards or pocket cards)
2h2d8h8c forms AhKhJh(8h2h) for an Ace High Flush
QsTc8s8d forms AhKh(Qs)Jh(Tc) for Broadway or an Ace High Straight
KsKd4h4c forms (KsKd)KhAhQd for Three of a Kind Kings
As2s7s6s forms (As)AhKhQd(7s) for a Pair of Aces
5. The game is Deuce to Seven Triple Draw. Which of these hands would win after the last draw? (Remember Deuce to Seven uses different hand rankings than most poker games.)

Answer: 2h3s4d5d7s

In Deuce to Seven the goal is to get the worst possible hand. In this game Aces play high and Straights and Flushes do count as high hands. Therefore the best possible hand is 23457 unsuited. That makes 2h3s4d5d7s the winning hand. Here are the hand rankings:
2h3s4d5d7s - the nuts
As2d3h4s5h - it is not the Wheel because the Ace plays high and reads (2345A)
2s3d4h5s6d - is high because it is a Straight
2c3c4c5c7c - is high because it is a Flush
6. In a game of Seven Card Stud the players have the following hands: (Hole)Board[River] (AdKs)AcJh2dKh[Kc] (2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] (TdTc)Ts5d9c6s[3c] (Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] Which hand wins?

Answer: (2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s]

Seven Card Stud uses the traditional hand ranking system where a Royal Flush is best. In this case the best hand would be the (2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] because it can form the Steel Wheel (As2s3s4s5s), a Wheel that is also a Flush and therefore a Straight Flush. A Straight Flush beats a Full House. Here are the rest of the hand rankings:
(2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] - Steel Wheel (As2s3s4s5s)
(AdKs)AcJh2dKh[Kc] - Full House (KsKhKcAdAc)
(Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] - Flush (Jc9c8c7c2c)
(TdTc)Ts5d9c6s[3c] - Trips (TdTcTs9c6s)
The (Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] could also make a Straight (JcTh9c8c7c) but a Flush has a higher ranking. The (TdTc)Ts5d9c6s[3c] dealt that way would be called rolled up Tens because the player had pocket Tens with a Ten as the first card on the board.
7. The game is Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Split this time. The hands are still the same: (Hole)Board[River] (AdKs)AcJh2dKh[Kc] (2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] (TdTc)Ts5d9c6s[3c] (Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] Of the choices below which is correct for how the hand would be decided?

Answer: (2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] wins both high and low

In Hi/Lo games where there is no qualifier then the lowest hand no matter how high splits the pot with the high hand. In games like this winning both the high and the low, or scooping the pot, is hard to do. In this case though one player has the best possible hand for doing this - the Steel Wheel. The (2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] wins the high with a Straight Flush (As2s3s4s5s) and the low with (A2345 - noted this way because suits do not affect the low hand). Here would be the high and low rankings:
High
(2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] - Steel Wheel (As2s3s4s5s)
(AdKs)AcJh2dKh[Kc] - Full House (KsKhKcAdAc)
(Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] - Flush (Jc9c8c7c2c)
(TdTc)Ts5d9c6s[3c] - Trips (TdTcTs9c6s)
Low
(2s4s)AsQh3s8d[5s] - A2345 (the nuts)
(Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] - A2789
(TdTc)Ts5d9c6s[3c] - 3569T
(AdKs)AcJh2dKh[Kc] - A2JKK
8. The game is Seven Card Stud Eight or Better this time. The hands are: (Hole)Board[River] (9dQs)9hJh2dQh[Qc] (8dTc)8s5d8h6s[3c] (Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] (Ad2d)TsJsQdAs[9s] Is there a qualifying low that could split the pot?

Answer: No

In this case no hand has an eight as its highest card in a low hand and therefore no hand would qualify for the low. The high hand would win the pot outright. Here are the low rankings:
(Jc9c)8cAh2c7c[Th] - A2789
(8dTc)8s5d8h6s[3c] - 3568T
(Ad2d)TsJsQdAs[9s] - A29TJ
(9dQs)9hJh2dQh[Qc] - 299JQ
In Eight or Better it is easier to win the hand outright since the low must qualify. A high hand will always win at least half of the pot but a low hand can only win half if it qualifies. It is possible to scoop the pot by winning both the high and the low with a qualifying hand.
9. The next game is Omaha Eight or Better and the board reads AhAd8s6h7h. Of the hands below which one will scoop the pot (win both the high and the low)?

Answer: Ac2s3s6s

Omaha Eight or Better is a high low split game but the low must qualify, it must have no card higher than an 8 and no pairs. Flushes and straights do not negate a low hand.

In this case Ac2s3s6s has both the best high, a Full House, and the best low, a 67, so it would scoop the pot. Here are the hand rankings for both the high and the low: (bracketed cards are hole cards or pocket cards)
High
Ac2s3s6s - AhAd(Ac6s)6h Full House
9h9d5h6c - (5c)6h7h8s(9h) Straight
KsKd8h4c - AhAd(KsKd)8s Two Pair
KcTcJh8d - AhAd8s(8dKc) Two Pair
Low
Ac2s3s6s - A(23)67
KsKd8h4c - A(4)67(8)
9h9d5h6c - A(56)78
KcTcJh8d - does not qualify
10. The last game is once again Texas Hold'em. The board reads AhAd8s6h7h. Of the hands below which one wins?

Answer: 9h5h

The 9h5h makes a flush and beats any of the other hands. Here are the hand rankings:
9h5h forms Ah9h7h6h5h - Ace High Flush
Td9d forms Td9d8s7h6h - Straight
Ac2s forms AhAdAc8s7h - Trip Aces
KsKd forms AhAdKsKd8s - Two Pair

Hold'em is one of the most straight forward forms of poker where very little information is hidden from your opponent. Much of it relies on whether or not you believe the story your opponent is telling you with their bets and whether or not the story you are telling with your bets is believable.
